Fedora Project Infrastructure Map/Landscape/Overview
by jtroan@jt-sw.com
As a follow-up from today's infrastructure meeting, this is a heads-up to
everyone on the mailing list that I'm starting work on the (current) FP
Infrastructure "Map/Landscape/Overview" (as Kevin phrased it).
In gathering information, my starting points are --
1. http://infrastructure.fedoraproject.org/infra/docs/
2. Nagios, both the map and lists of servers
3. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Infrastructure/Architecture (some older
information -- thanks Kevin!)
4. browse the list of servers in the DNS tables
If anyone knows of another place I should also look at, please let me know.
The final output is yet to be determined, but I've thought about .png
(portability) and .pdf (in-line links). Considering the need to update
it, .png is the front runner. Now that I know about the architecture wiki
page (#3 above), I'm starting to lean toward making an updated version of
the wiki page.
Also.... if you want to e-mail me directly, use jtroan(a)jt-sw.com. Please
use "FP:" -- that is a colon at the end -- in the subject so that my mail
rule will re-folder it next to the stuff I get from this mailing list.
Side note..... I'm looking for suggestions on what info to add for FP into
my .sig -- intermingled with my football and Trek club blurbs. :-)
Thanks.....

Meeting Agenda Item: Introduction Michael Haynes
by Michael Haynes
Greetings.
My name is Michael Haynes (IRC: mhaynes) and I'm from southern Alabama in
the US. I've been working with computers for around 25 years with 20 of
them being in a professional capacity. Over the years I have worked in PC
support, network installation and support, and for the past 8 years as a
developer. Currently I am working toward moving more into system
administration and security.
I would like to apply my current skill set to the Fedora project in any way
I can while getting some more hands-on experience with administration /
security so that I can build up that skill set to an acceptable level.
Here's a short list of what I bring to the table:
- C++, C#, Java, Python
- HTML, Javascript, JQuery
- XML, XSLT, XPath
- MS SQL, PostgreSQL
- A+, Network+, Security+, MCP, and several CIW certifications. Currently
preparing for the Linux+ and hope to achieve that within the next 6 weeks.
- Good communication skills (and not too shabby at documentation)
There are several goals I hope to achieve here. First and foremost is the
opportunity to be a part of this community and learn from you all while
hopefully contributing something positive back to the group and the project
as a whole. And on a personal level I want to further develop my current
skills while also building up the required skills to move my career in a
new direction.
For the next few weeks I will probably be hiding in the background just
trying to get acclimated to how the team works and the processes you
follow. Once I've got a good feel for things I'll be jumping in with both
feet!
Feel free to contact me at mhaynes.linux(a)gmail.com if you have any
questions or just want to chat about something.
Thanks,
Michael Haynes

How mirrormanager works
by Pierre-Yves Chibon
Hi Matt,
I would like to run by you my understanding of how mirrormanager works, I hope
I am not to far from the truth but please if I am let me know :)
Mirrormanager is splitted into three parts: the UI, the API and a cron task.
The UI is the current TurboGears1 application [1]. People can login in there and
register an institution (Site) with one or more sub-domain (Host) each mirroring
one or more Product (Fedora, EPEL...).
For each sub-domain (Host), there are a number of settings available such as
from
where the mirror pulls its updates, who can pull from it, restricting the user's
country or network.
Users manage their mirror there, admin can access any Site/Host and update their
settings as well.
The API is a cgi script, called in our case by yum, which redirects the user to
the closest mirror, active, up-to-date and according to the settings of the
mirror.
The cron task, runs daily and crawls the mirror to check if they are up to date
or not and register in the database which folder are up to date and which are
not
for every single mirror.
This cron task (or is it another?) also generates the publiclist pages [2] using
the data it just retrieved about each mirror.
I have been trying to figure out how exactly are retrieved the mirrors on
publiclist. I found the query used by MM1 [3] and I was wondering if there would
not be a way to simplify that. Would it be an option to have the cron task
setting a flag on the database saying if a host is up to date or not?
Or am I missing some of the information?
If we could simplify this part we could drop the cron task generating the
publiclist pages and just display them on the fly as part of the UI.
As part of the re-write, there is of course the UI since it is TurboGears1, but
the CGI script and the cron tasks should not need much changes, would they?
Thanks for your help,
Pierre
