firefox 1.0.1 and java
by Gerhard Magnus
Once I installed the new firefox 1.0.1 I lost the java runtime
environment I had finally been able to get working with firefox 1.0.
The "About Mozilla Firefox" window says I'm running "Firefox/1.0.1
Fedora/1.0.1-1.3.2". I assume this new version of firefox is using
files from the directory tree that starts /usr/lib/firefox-1.0.1, which
means I need to make a symbolic link (using the ln -s command)
from /usr/java/jre1.5.0/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
to /usr/lib/firefox-1.0.1/plugins. This is the same procedure I
successfully used before to make the link in
the /usr/lib/firefox-1.0/plugins directory.
For some reason this procedure is not working -- the new link
in /usr/lib/firefox-1.0.1/plugins appears in red instead of blue. I've
tried deleting the link (using rm -r) from both
the /usr/lib/firefox-1.0/plugins and the /usr/lib/firefox-1.0.1/plugins
directories. Although they no longer show up (using ls -al) the link
creation (using ln -s) still gives a non-functioning link. Then when I
do a locate libjavaplugin_oji.so I get --
/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_06/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_06/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/java/jre1.5.0/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/java/jre1.5.0/plugin/i386/ns7-gcc29/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/lib/firefox-1.0/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/lib/firefox-1.0.1/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
which seems to be saying the links are still there in both firefox
directories! When I try ls -l on the /usr/lib/firefox-1.0.1/plugins
directory I get:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 Mar 6 16:51 libjavaplugin_oji.so ->
libjavaplugin_oji.so
flashing in red -- it looks like the link is linking to itself. Or
something.... Any suggestions on how to clean this up or at least to
hack through it further?

If you check out the SANE Projects Supported Devices list here:
http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-PLUSTEK
It looks like your scanner is not supported ... yet.
Since there is some similarity with other scanners from Plustek, it
looks like it may be supported in the near future but there is no way of
telling how near that future will be.
You could try uncommenting the backend in dll.conf that is indicated to
be similar (sane-gt68xx
<http://www.sane-project.org/man/sane-gt68xx.5.html>) but it is known to
not *specifically* encompass your chipset ... but you could get lucky
and get partial functionality.
If all else fails, file a bug report with the SANE project requesting
your chipset to be supported and provide them some details of your
hardware if asked.

RE: Apache: httpd; apachectl status and fullstatus.
by Dan Thurman
I tried that. Did not work. I am wondering if I missed
a system configuration step, namely that typing
domainname results in an empty system domain name
setting? I tried domainname cdkkt.com and that did
not work either.
So, I am at loss as to why this is a problem....
PS: Let me know if domainname is used - I just
dont recall if this is needed. The /etc/resolv.conf
does have a 'search cdkkt.com' entry in it.
Thanks -
Dan

Final note: IGNORE STEP (3) in the instructions. Uncommenting
the <VirtualHost *> ... </VirtualHost> block causes the administrative
step (port 8090) to fail.

RE: Apache: httpd; apachectl status and fullstatus. [FrontPage install fails]
by Dan Thurman
OK, I changed the <Location /server-status> section and
allowed everyone to access it and note that the apachectl
command does work. I tried to install FrontPage and it still
fails. Rats. As far as why I cannot get server-status to work
"out of the box" is not my current issue I will leave it to those
who care.
For those who want details of the failed FP installation:
=====================================================
Where is the current apache control file (apachectl) located: []/usr/sbin/apachectl
Currently running Apache/
Checking for previous versions of FrontPage Server Extensions to upgrade...
You have no previous versions of FrontPage Server Extensions installed.
There are no settings to migrate!
For Apache 2.0, FrontPage requires Apache version or later.
Please first upgrade to Apache 2.0.40 or later, with mod_so.
======================================================
OK - I figured it out.
To install FP on FC4:
1) Follow instructions in: http://www.howtoforge.com/linux_apache2_frontpage2002
but do not install the fp product until these steps
are first performed:
a) Edit /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
1) Look for the Listen *:80, change it to 80
2) Comment out default Virtual Host: <VirtualHost *> ... </VirtualHost>
b) Rename or delete: /var/www/html/auth/.htaccess file if exist.
c) Get previous version's apachectl shell-script file. I used FC2's script.
Current script apparently is either broken or changed so that
behavior is different. apachectl -v start for example does
not return any version information, for example and the fp script
requires it.
2) Complete the rest of the installation instructions from (1) above.
3) You might want to uncomment the <VirtualHost *> ... </VirtualHost>
block, but I am testing to see of that will cause any problems. It
shouldn't but I don't know. If it does, comment it back out.
I think that covers it...

Load balancer
by Tom Ok
Hey all
I'm using FC4 as a load blanacer with ipvsadm.
where can i find information on patches applied to fc4 kernel's?
there is a specific patch i need to solve a specific problem with my
setup see... http://www.austintek.com/LVS/LVS-HOWTO/HOWTO/LVS-HOWTO.LVS-NAT.html#LVS-N...
It's not something related to fc but i tried at the lvs-list with no
success. so i'm trying to find out if the patch is already applied in
fc4 stock kernel or should i apply it manually.
Thanks.

Apache: httpd; apachectl status and fullstatus.
by Dan Thurman
Hi Folks,
I am trying to install FrontPage extensions on FC4 and I think
I stumbled on why I was not able to even get started. My guess
is that the FP script is expecting to locate the apache http version
which it is not able to locate? But in any case, I was not able to
get the apachectl status or apachectl fullstatus to work:
==============================================
> apache status (and apache fullstatus has the same output)

gcc not compiling
by Dotan Cohen
I'm just getting started in programming C. My first attempt:
#include < stdio.h>
void main () {
printf("\nHello World!\n");
}
Threw this error:
[dotancohen@localhost ~]$ gcc hello.c
hello.c:1:20: error: stdio.h: No such file or directory
hello.c: In function 'main':
hello.c:3: warning: incompatible implicit declaration of built-in
function 'printf'
hello.c:2: warning: return type of 'main' is not 'int'
hello.c:4:2: warning: no newline at end of file
So I googled for "1:20: error: stdio.h: No such file or directory"
and found a post that suggests that the answer to the problem is found
in the gcc manual. So I started reading it, but it is long and I'm not
finding anything!
I think that I'm missing a library stdio.h but I don't know where to
find it, and where to put it once I do find it. Or am I completly
wrong? The error message is pretty clear.

Viewing JSPs from Mozilla Browser on Fedora
by Frank Bogle
Hello All,
I am developing a J2EE application on a hosted Linux Data Centre,
I have a local instance of Fedora 1 installed at home and was wondering if
anyone knows about limitations of Mozilla for viewing JSPs.
The basic problem is that I have defined some entity and session java beans
in JBoss and am using these to populate some JSPs for query based details.
Some of the JSPs work well in Mozilla others do not.
It is an odd problem because from a WinXP client the server application
works perfectly.
Has anyone had problems like this and if so what do I need to do to get my
Mozilla browser to work correctly?
The main area of my confusion is why do some JSPs work and others fail to
load on Mozilla when they all work from WinXP.
The JSP engine is Jakarta Struts.
Any ideas, insights or views really appreciated.
In addition to this does anyone know if a proven method to upgrade Fedora 1
to the latest version of Fedora? I guess that I will use yum but where do I
point it to..?
Regards All
Franko
