Dell OptiPlex 745 reboot problem
by Tony Molloy
Hi,
I've just installed Fedora-9 on a lab of Dell OptiPlex 745 (SFF) machines. (
only in 1 lab TG )
After running firstboot when I went to reboot the machines they just hang and
I had to do a hard reboot. I thought this was a minor glitch and ignored it.
Now however when the machines boot into Fedora-9 the "reboot" and "suspend"
buttons do not work. The windowing system just shuts down and I get a text
prompt and the machines just hang there.
As thes are dual boot machines this will cause a lot of problems starting
monday when the students return ;-(
Is ther some magic incantation to grub to sort this problem or any body got
any ideas.
Thank's
Tony

F10 HD install - anyone successfully done this?
by mike cloaked
I have tried various ways to persuade my laptop to install F10 from the DVD
iso file stored on one of the partitions that will not be formatted during
the install. Nothing I have tried gets the install to continue past the
stage where the Partition holding the iso image is selected. It says it
cannot find the install media and seems to have added images/install.img to
the end of the directory path where my iso file is stored.
I have also tried by adding the images directory to the same directory
containing the iso, and within it is the install.img file
Telling the install to point to the directory on the partition containing
the DVD iso and the images directory still gives an error message that
anaconda cannot find the install media.
I have tried from the netinst iso burned to a physical CD disk, the vmlinuz
and initrd.img extracted from this iso and referred from grub to boot it,
from the extracted vmlinuz and initrd.img from the DVD iso booted via grub,
and whichever way I start the HD install it always fails at the same point.
I could use the DVD on this machine as it does have a DVD drive but I have
other machines without a DVD drive that I would like to install from the DVD
iso on the hard drive.
Does anyone have a confirmation that an HD install does work? I am
wondering if this is just my specific hardware that is tripping up anaconda
in this case - so other reports would be valuable.
if I can successfully do an HD install on this machine I have some hope that
it is possible on other machines... and if so what is the trick. I have been
doing installs this way for quite a few years with all previous versions of
Fedora including F9. The only difference is that in this case the images are
stored on a laptop which has f9 with SElinux enabled so I don't know if this
makes any difference - I can't see that it should and the iso files are
readable by all users with permissions set to 755.
I have tried adding linux askmethod to the install, instead of the graphical
boot - but every way I try for an HD install fails at the same point and I
am getting heartily frustrated now.
Can anyone report success please?

I installed from the KDE Live CD, so I don't have the gnome desktop
installed, but all the fonts on gnome apps are way too big. How do I

They start on Oct 12, which coincides with the last update I did (a
groupupdate of KDE from updates-testing-newkey). This is F9 on a x86_64.
I can't do far pin the segfault down to a specific page or media type. I
did a "mozilla-plugin-config -i" a couple of hours back and it hasn't
happened since, but I thought I'd mention it in case anyone else had
seen this.
I'll post a followup if it happens again.

Lost audio on headphones (F9)
by Andre Costa
Hi,
my desktop computer has one of those front headphones connectors, and it
always worked (always = since Fedora8), playing the same audio that goes to
the front speakers. I tried it today and it doesn't work anymore, my guess
is that some of the recent updates might have changed something on audio
config (I know hardware is ok because system is dual-boot, and headphones
work on XP). Front speakers are working as expected.
I tried playing around with PulseAudio settings, but didn't get anywhere
I know this is a lame call for help, but I don't even know what kind of info
I should provide. Here's something that might help:
# cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xa3220000 irq 22
System is running Fedora 9 with latest updates.
Any help will be appreciated. Let me know what kind of additional info I
should provide.
Regards,
Andre

Jackd Problems -- alsa_pcm: xrun of at least 1227061150613.504 msecs
by Jonathan Ryshpan
In the past I've never had any problems running jackd. Now I'm getting
a very large number of messages reading:
**** alsa_pcm: xrun of at least 1227061150613.504 msecs
I'm running F9 on an x86_64 system with all updates installed.
Pulseaudio is not running. Jackd is started via qjackctl. No past
problems with audio beyond the usual conflicts between pulseaudio and
firefox.
Questions:
(1) What exactly does this message mean? An "xrun" is a buffer under-
or over-run -- but what does the time interval represent?
(2) Whatever the time interval means, it looks rather large.
1227061150613.504 msec is many days (or maybe years if msec means
millisec and not microsec) This looks like a misconfiguration of some
kind or a missing component. Any idea what it might be?
Here is the start of the qjackctl log of the session.

Network changing from eth0 to eth1
by Jim
FC8, KDE
What is changing the Network settings from eth0 to eth1 ?
Even if you go into /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and setup
as eth0, and reboot box,it will change settings to eth1.
And it is causing a unstable network.
This box only has one ethernet card in it.

Very slow-starting EVDO modem
by Frank Cox
As I've previously mentioned, I am trying to get a Novatel EVDO modem to work
consistently on a particular laptop. Sometimes it works, mostly it doesn't.
After much experimentation I have discovered that it apparently takes
about five minutes for the machine to realize that it has a modem, after which
it works.

As you can see, it took six minutes before the device somehow reset itself and
the machine realized that it had a modem attached.

ssh2
by roland
Hello
I am using a terminalemulator Anita to login to a server, who validates
the ssh connection with 3DES Cipher.
Now this server is hacked, somebody entered with the root user.
Suddenly I have ssh2
So now I get the following message, when trying to login:
dsa_verify failed for server_host_key
I see the directory .ssh2 in the /root directory, but not in any $HOME dir
How can I stop ssh2 verifying?
Or is there something else I can do?
Thanks for help
