httpd service is dead
by Simon Tierney
Sorry if this is basic.
Since I started using Fedora 10 I can't login as root.
Even though the system recognizes the root password when it requires it
for certain administrative tasks it refuses to let me login as root.
When I try to edit httpd.conf I get the message "could not save file..."
it doesn't even prompt me for the root password.
My httpd service is dead and I can't resurrect it, what should I do?

No Sound on Fedora 10 with Audigy SB
by Reuben D. Budiardja
Hello,
I've searched this in the archive and on the internet and still haven't found
anything.
I have Creative Audigy SB sound card. It doesn't work on F10. When logging in
to KDE, KDE says something about pulse audio doesn't work, and phonon is
falling back to use Audigy, but I still don't have any sound.
I tried GNOME and still doesn't have sound.
I thought there used to be "system-config-soundcard" , but I couldn't find that
either. Below is some relevant output of lspci and lsmod in case it helps
diagnosing the problem.
I still have FC 7 on the system (multi-boot), and just confirmed that the sound
works on FC 7.
Thanks for any help.

PHP Mime Broken?
by das
Hello Friends
I copied a part of an website with 'wget -ckr' and then when I opened
the files with a browser, none of the three GUI browsers Epiphany,
Firefox, or Galeon on my Fedora 8 are being able to open the PHP
files, like say index.php which is called by index.html. Even when I
gave the command 'Open With' what is happening that the browser is
opening another tab, and asking there once again how to open the *.php
files. As a test I sent some files in a tar to one of my friends who
is on Fedora 10, and they are opening fine.
What is happening there? Is the mime broken? And why? Any suggestion?
One thing, for the time being I will not be able to upgrade to Fedora
10, I am now too busy with a job to change OS. Anything else?
Thank you all.

Partitioning
by Kirk
I'm currently running only Fedora10. I installed it a few months ago.
I know very little about partitioning.
I'd like to setup partitions so I can install windowsXP and Ubuntu
to see what its like.
The /dev/sda1 has the ext3 file system with 196.60 MiB (162.50 unused)
and the /dev/sda2 with 232.69 GiB (all unused), is listed as unknown.
Do I need to format an NTSF partition for windows, an ext2 for
Ubuntu, and a Swap for the Linux programs? I suppose each is a
separate operation? Is there any particular order? And what should the
minimum size be for each partition.
I've installed GParted, but am afraid I'll screw it up.
I've been searching for answers in the forum & manuals but haven't been
able to find what I need. Naturally, any links that would help me with
this would also be appreciated.
I appreciate any guidance on this.

connecting to a WPA-PSKr from command line
by Mark Ryden
Hello,
- I have a wireless router which is configured to work with WPA authentication.
- I can easily connect it with NetworkManager after typing the password.
- I want to connect it from command line.
- I tried with iwconfig, but I could not. I googled for it, and saw
suggestions to use
wpa supplicant.
My questions is:
- is usage of wpa supplicant is a MUST when trying to associate to
wireless router which works with WPA authentication?
- Can somebody recommend some link that worked for him , which
specifies how to connect a WPA authenticated wireless router with wpa
supplicant?

KDE4 Widget Inconsistency
by homburg@tips-Q.com
Every time I boot I get a different desktop and panel.
On the desktop, the locations of the widgets change
slightly.
On the panel, the taskbar and pager widgets are removed and
the locations of what remains are totally rearranged.
It makes no difference if the widgets are locked or
unlocked.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Announcing the Fedora Geo Spin
by Yaakov Nemoy
Hi Lists,
Let's begin with an apology, shall we? Sorry for cross posting, but
this does concern people on multiple mailing lists.
I would like to announce the formation of a Fedora Geo Spin with tools
for integration into Open Street Map. For more information, please see
the following link:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Ynemoy/Fedora_Geo_Spin
In short, the Fedora Geo Spin will be a respin of Fedora with packages
for doing OSM and cartography installed out of the box, or included on
a LiveCD and/or LiveUSB. For OSM people, the primary advantage is a
live usb stick that can be used at mapping parties to save time
configuring user computers to do mapping. The USB stick can then be
brought home, and the user can continue doing mapping there. For
Fedora people, it gives us better Fedora exposure.
Right now, the spin is a draft, and once completed will be submitted
to the Fedora Spins process for approval and inclusion in Fedora as a
blessed spin.
The link above will be the canonical todo list, for anyone looking to
participate. If you wish to help, please feel free to contact me on
or off these email lists.
Cheers,
Yaakov Nemoy

Re: yum list display some package in 2 rows

I also have "yum list available" in a script. All the regular lines
begin with non-whitespace and all "additional" lines begin with
whitespace, so I pipe it through the following:
tr "\n" "#" | sed -e 's/# / /g' | tr "#" "\n"
Turn newlines into octothorpes; replace octothorpe+space with space
globally (i.e., delete the octothorpe if it's followed by a space);
replace octothorpes with newlines. It's predicated on the assumption
that there would never be an octothorpe in a yum listing. If there ever
is, then I'd have to pick another character.
It's a hack, but it works (so far).

USB Descriptor error message on booting
by Reuben D. Budiardja
Hello,
I just recently installed Fedora 10. On booting, I see the error messages
regarding USB port below. This makes the boot process really slow, at it seems
to get delayed for every one of those message.
I tried plugging in my USB stick after I logged in to KDE and it seems to
work. I also have Creative Webcam on USB (which I haven't tried). In any case,
what are these messages ?
(These are taken from "dmesg", but they are the same messages I saw when
booting. I can send the complete output of "dmesg" if necessary).
Thanks for any help
