Slow connections with last two glibc versions in F16
by Trever L. Adams
I am wondering if anyone else is seeing this:
My setup is mail servers are F16 vms hostest on F16. My router has
tproxy with squid on F16, many clients are on F16. File servers are
Samba4 on F16.
I am not sure which of the last two glibc versions is the culprit
(although I am leaning toward the last). However, since one of them,
connections to my mail servers hang for a bit. It takes a while for git
to connect to remote git trees (not just gitweb, but git as well). All
web connections hang for up to 30 seconds when starting the connection.
Once connected everything goes fine.
It isn't DNS, as tcpdump shows it happening at normal speed/places (or
it seems so). Squid was updated, but the problem showed up as soon as
the new glibc was allowed to work (restarting daemons) and isn't limited
to just http traffic.
Am I alone in this?
Thank you,
Trever

xfce and slow workspace switching; how to fix?
by stan
I've been using the Gnome fallback mode in F15 x86_64; old hardware and
preference. However it seems to not agree with my crt monitor, and has
been lately causing the monitor to go blank on context switches between
console and X. The only solution has been to turn it off and wait for
a while. I thought it was hardware failure, but I've been testing
xfce and it doesn't seem to cause this problem. But the switch between
workspaces is taking 5 to 10 seconds in some cases, and never less than
2 to 3 seconds. In Gnome fallback, switches of workspace are basically
instantaneous. Since I use workspaces to group and organize usage, the
slow switch is a real annoyance. I have found no web noise about this
problem, so I assume is is only me and there is some setting that is
causing this. But I can't find anything. Does anyone have a suggestion
of what might be causing this slow workspace switching in xfce and how
to fix it?

Permissions, F-16 -
by Bob Goodwin
Would someone explain the meaning of the permissions in the last
line below, especially the "+" ?
[root@box6 bobg]# ll /dev/bus/usb/001
total 0
crw-rw-r--. 1 root root 189, 0 Feb 28 03:08 001
crw-rw-r--+ 1 root root 189, 2 Feb 28 03:08 003
I understand read, write, and execute, and generally set them
with the values of 4, 2, and 1, but the --. and the --+ don't
seem to be covered in anything I've "googled." "d" for
directory, but "c" ?
Thanks,
Bob

17 Alpha cannot mount partition during install.
by Zoltan Szecsei
Hi,
Just trying out the new i386 Alpha.
I have now tried several different HDs, doing a full install
(repartitioning the entire HD) and once all the partitions have been
formatted, the install process crashes every time whilst trying to mount
/home.
Any ideas what else I can try to get around this?
Using an ASUS P8P67 Pro M/B with i7 2600K cpu, plus 2 * nVidia ENGTS430
VGA cards, plus 2 * Logitech cordless desktops (Kyb/Mouse) in order to
create a 2 seat multiseat system.
Thanks in advance,
Zoltan

when "yum distro-sync" downgrades a package, it says "Installing", not "Downgrading"
by Andre Robatino
When yum distro-sync updates some packages and downgrades others, during the
transaction it says "Updating :" for the updated packages, but "Installing :"
for the downgraded ones. Is there a reason for that? I would only expect to see
"Installing :" for a newly installed package.
(I considered posting this on the test list, since distro-sync is more commonly
used there, but it's not exclusive to test releases.)
