About the palette Mo mentioned -- it is really useful to switch to it
(tango icons palette) in inkscape and use it as a base/reference (see
the attached screenshot). The default inkscape palette isn't very good
for tangoish icons.

Plus, because you are making an icon, you'll get best results when
following tango guidelines (it even has suggested workflow videos):
