yes i think right side is more appropriate as we can place icons on left so it will not look good to merge the swirl with them.. i think to move swirl a little bottom will also be cool..... what others say???

You are right, the point of interest must be on the right part of the 
screen. Maybe have the swirl clockwise but full, not interrupted, like 
the one in Alpha (Rocket Trails 2) flipped vertically.
