If You mean: 
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/firstboot-1.113-4.fc14

it didn't break the Xfce spin. Xfce spin is using gdm still, which
means metacity is pulled in, which means firstboot was fine. 

So, this case seems to me like a poor example for your position.
