PkgDB is already extracting the icons from packages. 
In the next release it will be hopefully served as cached static content. 
It should be much faster and easier to download.

All application data collected from package parsing / pkgdb users input will be also queryable in 
JSON format (currently broken).  If there is need for special export format I'm open to discussion.
