[Tonight I did a yum upgrade on a slightly newer intel gfx system, i915G, and
did not have this problem, so...]

I was throwing darts over my shoulder. :-p

None were installed, so I did another yum upgrade and tried again. No change,
so I installed IceWM, which works, and from its xterm I was able to run Konsole.

Its 11 year old onboard i865G works (subject to
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=85016) "normally" in Mageia 4,
Cauldron (2.99.917-3), openSUSE 13.1, 13.2/X11:XOrg (3.0.0git aka 2.99.917)
and Tumbleweed/Factory/X11:XOrg (also 3.0.0git aka 2.99.917), and F20 and F21
(2.99.916-3).

Must be software, either Intel 2.99.917-2 driver and/or Plasma and/or Xorg,
and only for this particular video hardware variety.
