That "hang" was in fact a constantly updating message to say:
(1 of 2) A start job is running for dev-mapper-luks
(2 of 2) A start job is running for Crytography Setup for luks-<UUID>
If you press and hold the backspace key you can see the prompt. Just ignore it
and enter the password.
