This might sound callous, but can you think of a better way to find out if
something is important than to take it away?  If it's that old, and someone
wants to use the info, it probably needs to be updated anyway.

I agree with this categorically, but want to be clear:  I fully intend to
delete pages that obviously have no value.  Things like unused templates,
dead pages with categories and no content, etc can go away without process
or discussion.  For example, one of the top hits on my "special:old pages"
was a list of packages maintained by Jose Matos (he's a good natured sort,
so I'll pick on him :) at some indeterminate point in the past.  Nobody
cares.  We have better places to convey this info now.

We should of course err on the side if caution when considering actual
*deletion* - but if the community is uncomfortable with our judgement on
the matter, they should get involved.
Leaving everything as-is for fear of disappointing a few people isn't an
acceptable strategy anymore.
