It's really not spins question. Generally the open source drivers for video 
cards are not able to do power management as well as the closed drivers. 
You might try seeing in the catalyst or nvidia (if appropriate) gives 
you better battery like. There are also some kernel settings that can 
affect power consumption, but i am not real familiar with them. You also 
want to be careful with some that are experimental as there is potential 
do damage hardware.
