KDM Login Issue

I used to have /etc/sysconfig/desktop, but recently read that it is not 
required, when using KDM, so I deleted it. I also uninstalled GDM, so that 
only one DM is present, namely KDM.

Everything works fine, KDM starts, but when I log in, it always logs in to 
Gnome. I have tried time and again to click KDE, login, reboot, etc, but the 
default is always Gnome. I can only get KDE, if I expressly select it.

How do I make it the default, without recreating /etc/sysconfig/desktop?
