I am not getting it to reoccur. I tried three reboots with 3.4.1 and another 
with an older kernel with a freshly rebuilt initramfs. So it seems unlikely 
to be a kernel regression. Unless I see it happen again there probably isn't 
a way to tell what actually was going on. I did have to use the keyboard 
to unlock the filesystem in early boot, so the keyboard was recognized 
early. Maybe I got gnome in a weird state somehow, though I don't remember 
doing anything unusual before getting the login window.
