I've been testing this locally today across all supported releases and
with a variety of different machines and scenarios.  It's tested
fairly well, with the end result being no real change noticable after
the install/update.  Unless there are major objections, I plan on
committing this Monday and I'll follow up with a few commits for
Jarod's fixes.

(I would commit it today, but I'm on PTO tomorrow and there likely
won't be another build until Monday anyway.)
