Does livecd-iso-to-disk work for you?

I generally use the following commandline:

livecd-iso-to-disk --format --reset-mbr --noverify whatever.iso /dev/sdNn

That is if I don't mind losing everything on the thumbdrive.  It works for me.  I think the liveusb-creator doesn't work as well.
