gdm login ignores /etc/profile?

I think, correct me if im wrong, that profile is read for tty logins
only (or for "su -", which uses login)
when you login through a pts (i.e. an xterm, telnet or ssh) profile
should not be run. bashrc, tcshrc, etc... are run instead.
