What has happened to desktop icons in rawhide?

Would be useful to know what is broken.  My understanding is that Ubuntu
(and variants) are keen on using this as a replacement for GDM

and I would have expected it to be functional.  Perhaps the way forward
for the "lighter" desktop environments is to switch to something like
this.
