After posting that, I realize my noobness with Linux.  I had the acpi
value wrong.  It should be acpi=off ....  :face+palm:  Anyway, since I
do need to have that off in order to see the DVD-RW, then I'll lose
out all of the benefits of the ACPI.  Per [1]:

"When first published in 1996, ACPI evolved an existing collection of
power management BIOS code, Advanced Power Management (APM)
application programming interfaces (APIs), PNPBIOS APIs, and
Multiprocessor Specification (MPS) tables into a well-defined power
management and configuration interface specification."

Since this is an 8 core system, I'd lose out more on MPS than the
others.  So why then with ACPI left out in the kernel parameters, my
DVD-RW isn't shown in /dev when all the other detections are in place
as shown in lspci and /var/log/messages?
