We have several ideas in place ( Atleast me and James did and I do ) on 
how to extend test days when we implemented it we just wanted to see how 
things would turnout first.

The reason why they are bound to specific day has nothing to do with the 
reporter/tester but are because of maintainers availability during that 
time ( always better to have maintainer/upstream available) however the 
future envisions required little or no involvement from maintainers 
other than working on the result.
