This testing has taken an entire day and as I type this at a bit after 
4PM my time, it's just booting up again after the two tests.
The first test was to see if the new kernel would help - unfortunately, 
though it took many hours to install the 252 updates, when I tried to 
boot, it almost immediately kernel panicked...
Then I followed Andre's suggestion and after a lot of fiddling and 
having to install gcc and its dependencies and other stuff, I finally 
got the GL module to build successfully; that's where I'm rebooting from 
now...so, let's see what we've got -
Bootup to login screen was easily over 5 minutes - not so good
Login screen has a strange bug where it requires that I press the 
caps-lock key in order for the password to succeed - I know this has 
nothing to do with this thread, but, it's very odd (I've double checked 
that password, and I don't have it wrong - in fact it works normally 
once I get on my desktop)
Logging in is easily over three minutes now - not so good
Click on the Fedora 'start' button at lower left and it takes 9 seconds 
for the menu to pop up
Clicked on 'Web browser' in menu, and it still hasn't opened a window 
after three minutes

this is pretty useless
