Yes, right alt and left alt are not the same thing. On German keyboards, left 
alt is called alt and right alt is called Alt-Gr, so you can see that they are 
different. Even on a US international keyboard, right alt m produced µ, while 
left alt m does not. This also holds for most accented characters. Left alt 
opens menus and stuff, while right alt does the special keys.
