How to properly eject / remove hotswappable sata drive?

Is scsiadd really necessary ?

I tried using umount then eject but I get this error:
    eject: device "/dev/sdb" doesn't have a removable or hotpluggable flag

Aren't all sata drives removable and hotpluggable?
