    Do you have "xfce4-settings-manager" installed? I go there and in
    this case select Desktop, etc, as above. It configure the desktop
    with a few check marks. Mine is set to be blank unless I plug in a
    flash drive or such. Both computers work the same so it seems that
    should wok for you too.
