another FWIW: I have:

[jverreau at latitude ~]$ xdg-settings get default-web-browser
firefox.desktop
[jverreau at latitude ~]$ uname -a
Linux latitude.durand8450.info 4.1.7-200.fc22.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Sep 14
20:19:24 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have firefox 41, chrome 45 and chromium 43 installed. I did get an
unexpected prompt when I recently ran updates which included firefox 41.
The first time I opened firefox it advised me that firefox was not my
default browser would I like to make it so. I said yes. I haven't seen
issues with opening links from thunderbird.
