Wayland plus and minus
by Mark @ GMail
Great to see that Wayland is working very well with KDE now!
On the minus side, I've just bought a Logitech MX Master 3S mouse
(expensive but I *love* it!), which works marvellously on X11 but is
quite laggy under Wayland. The screen pointer frequently stops while
the mouse is moving. Is there a setting that would fix this?
As for the plus, the first one is that seemed to be the only obvious
reason not to stick with Wayland.
Secondly, I tried Wayland because I was getting a failure on X11 with a
webkit based program. It gave me an excuse to (re)try Wayland, and IT
WORKED!
While that was marvellous, it made me wonder if there was anything I
could do to get it working under X11. The error messages were
KMS: DRM_IOCTL_MODE_CREATE_DUMB failed: Permission denied
Failed to create GBM buffer of size 800x573: Permission denied
KMS: DRM_IOCTL_MODE_CREATE_DUMB failed: Permission denied
Failed to create GBM buffer of size 800x573: Permission denied
KMS: DRM_IOCTL_MODE_CREATE_DUMB failed: Permission denied
Failed to create GBM buffer of size 800x573: Permission denied
Failed to create EGL images for DMABufs with file descriptors -1, -1
and -1
I found various reports of this on the interweb, mostly suggesting that
it was to do with NVidia drivers (I have an NVidia Geforce GT 710
card), but clearly I've got a functioning version because Wayland found
it. Is there any way to get X11 to use the same driver?
My system is using akmod-nvidia-470xx version 470.223.02.
It does have a later version, 550.54.14, but this is "only" akmod-
nvidia", suggesting it's not specific for my card?

VPN setup Questions
by Sbob
Hi Fedora Guru's
I have a client that makes everyone run (ugh) windows laptops
I have managed to work around almost everythiing I need to access so I
can use my Linux laptop, the last remaining hurdle is the VPN
The windows laptop runs the GlobalProtect VPN
I created a Fedora 39 VM in VMWare workstation (on my Fedora 39/KDE host
/ laptop) just in case I mess up the network.
I created a new VPN connection by right clicking on the network icon on
the task bar going to "Configure Network Connections"
then I added a new connection and selected "PAN Global Protect
(openconnect)" as the connection type
go to
I added the gateway, saved the connection and rebooted the VM, now I can
go to networks and click connect on the new connection, then I can add
my username and passwd and just like the windows VPN it sends a code to
my phone and asks me to enter the code, and it connects successfully!
However once connected I cannot ssh to any of the network servers such
as our jump box, I can successfully ping it but I cannot ssh to it
Anyone have any ideas how to debug this? Maybe there is some sort of CA
cert or profile file I need from the windows laptop?
Thanks in advance

2024-03-18 @ ** 16:00 ** UTC - Fedora 40 Blocker Review Meeting
by Adam Williamson
# F40 Blocker Review meeting
# Date: 2024-03-18
# Time: ** 16:00 ** UTC
# Location:
https://matrix.to/#/#blocker-review:fedoraproject.org?web-instance[elemen...
Hi folks! It's time for another blocker review meeting. We have 1
proposed freeze exception for Beta, and 10 proposed blockers for Final.
As a reminder, clocks went forward in North America last week, so the
meeting is an hour earlier in UTC than it was before. If you have
changed your clocks forward recently the meeting will be at the same
local time as before, it not it will be earlier.
Here is a handy link which should show you the meeting time
in your local time:
https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?msg=Fedora+40+Block...
The meeting will be on Matrix. Click the link above to join in a web
client - you can authenticate with your FAS account - or use a
dedicated client of your choosing.
If you have time today, you can take a look at the proposed or
accepted blockers before the meeting - the full lists can be found
here: https://qa.fedoraproject.org/blockerbugs/ .
Remember, you can also now vote on bugs outside of review meetings! If
you look at the bug list in the blockerbugs app, you'll see links
labeled "Vote!" next to all proposed blockers and freeze exceptions.
Those links take you to tickets where you can vote.
https://pagure.io/fedora-qa/blocker-review has instructions on how
exactly you do it. We usually go through the tickets shortly before the
meeting and apply any clear votes, so the meeting will just cover bugs
where there wasn't a clear outcome in the ticket voting yet. **THIS
MEANS IF YOU VOTE NOW, THE MEETING WILL BE SHORTER!**
We'll be evaluating these bugs to see if they violate any of the
Release Criteria and warrant the blocking of a release if they're not
fixed. Information on the release criteria for F40 can be found on the
wiki [0].

works - or how it's supposed to go and you want to run one - check out

Hi folks! It's time for another blocker review meeting. We have 2
proposed blockers and 5 proposed freeze exceptions for Beta, and 4
proposed blockers for Final.
Please note that summer time starts in most of North America on Sunday,
and we follow that time for these meetings, so the meeting time in UTC
has changed. If you put your clocks forward this Sunday, the meeting
will be at the same local time as it was last week. If you do not, the
meeting will be one hour *earlier* than it was last week. You can
always run `date -u` to see the current UTC time and check, if you're
not sure. Here is a handy link which should show you the meeting time

Plasma 6 and related releases (well done)
by José Abílio Matos
Just a small note to say thank you to the KDE SIG. :-)
I have been using Fedora 40 since before the branching. My desktop is Plasma
Wayland.
What I liked about the big release:
* Most of the update process was quite smooth.
* Things, read applications and desktop, just work.
* I really like some of the new features. The Overview effect in particular is
a nice way to re-arrange windows between desktops (even with multiple
screens).
* With the last updates there is some kind of session management that is
coming to Plasma Wayland.
Thank you,
