No rule to make target dbmon.sh

On latest master I am getting:

make[1]: *** No rule to make target `ldap/admin/src/scripts/dbmon.sh',
needed by `all-am'.  Stop.

Did a git clean -f -x -d followed by autoreconf -i; ./configure
--with-openldap --prefix=/srv --enable-debug

What am I missing?

Not sure, but you should not need to run autoreconf unless you are 
changing one of the autoconf files.  There is an autogen.sh script for 
this purpose instead of using autoreconf directly.

Just ran:

git clean -f -x -d
./autogen.sh
./configure --with-openldap --prefix=/srv --enable-debug

Same issue still.

Why are you running autogen.sh?  Are you modifying configure.ac or 
Makefile.am?

I have no problem
git clone git://fedorahosted.org/git/389/ds.git
cd ds
./configure --with-openldap --prefix=/var/tmp/junk --enable-debug
make
make install

Perhaps you have some leftover autoconf/automake/Makefile in your source 
directory?

If you are doing development (as opposed to just trying to figure out 
how to build it as a packager): one thing I find very helpful is to use 
a build directory that is separate from the source directory:
git clone git://fedorahosted.org/git/389/ds.git
mkdir dsbuild
cd dsbuilt
../ds/configure --with-openldap --prefix=/var/tmp/junk --enable-debug
make

That way, if something weird happens, and I want to make sure things are 
absolutely clean, I can just blow away the dsbuilt directory.

If you're still having problems, I'm not sure what's going on.

No, I checked and configure wasn't in the directory. Seems I'm missing

If you don't have the file "configure", then something is very wrong, 
and I don't know what that could be.  Nothing is going to work correctly 
until you figure out why "configure" is missing. Regenerating it may 
only be masking the root cause of the problems you are having.

Hi William,

Could you check if you have ./ldap/admin/src/scripts/dbmon.sh in your 
build tree?  I'm suspecting you might have wiped out by some clean 
procedure.

I usually build my local tree with rpmbuild which copies a build tree 
from the source tree checked out from git.  In the top of the build 
tree, Makefile is generated.  At the first time, there is no problem to 
run "make", but if I do "make clean" there, files such as dbmon.sh is

wiped out.  And the following "make" fails exactly as yours.

So, could you please double check you have all the necessary files in 
your build tree?

The file dbmon.sh is removed after make clean because it is added to AUTOMAKE
variable CLEANFILES.

BTW "make clean" removes also other files from git tree
        deleted:    ldap/admin/src/scripts/dbmon.sh
        deleted:    ldap/ldif/50posix-winsync-plugin.ldif
        deleted:    ldap/ldif/50replication-plugins.ldif
        deleted:    ldap/ldif/90betxn-plugins.ldif

I expect that these files should not be removed with make clean.

Must have been when I did a make clean earlier.

I have now run a git reset --hard HEAD to restore the files, and the
build appears to be working.
