Is there any chance things got better with code being on GitHub and
supposed to be easier to build?
There were changes in makefiles before transition
to github even (in AWS for example). I've removed most of my parches because of that.
So things are changed but not so fast as we want.
The most painful part was "DESTDIR" variable fey years ago...
