Gentlemen,
After watching Steven Hardy's OpenStack talk at the aeolus developer conference, I decided I like the whole OpenStack idea and decided to spend a little time digging a big deeper. One thing I noticed was that OpenStack was missing was key piece: Image Building functionality. Something we already have in Aeolus through the use of ImageFactory.
After some work with Steven and too many hours of hacking and video editing, we managed to create a demo - a proof of concept to show how we can integrate ImageFactory with OpenStack to add in Image Building. The result of which is a video and some repositories that will let you try out a limited version.
The video can be found here (it's only 6 mins): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdBM4HA3QUk&feature=youtu.be
I also quickly wrote a getting started: https://github.com/mtaylor/horizon/tree/master/imagefactory-setup You can ask me for more info if you get stuck.
I will be sending this stuff round the OpenStack mailing list later today. I'm hoping this will help us in our fight to generate a community (OpenStack have near 7000 strong communtiy).
If the idea is well recieved we aim to create a proper OpenStack plugin and tweak factory a little to fit in better with OpenStack. If you want to get involved in the project let me know, this is something we've been working on in our spare time so the more fingers and toes the better.
Regards
Martyn

Hey Martyn,
This is fantastic. I do agree this is potentially very interesting to the OpenStack community. And it would be great for Image Factory if they had more than one user, too. That's the whole point of making this stuff modular.
This may be something worth putting on our blog/twitter/etc. Do you want to do that? If you're too busy, I (or anyone else) can do a short write-up.
Thomas

Hi,
Great stuff Martyn! I just tweeted this - it looks like a worthwhile addition to the OpenStack family.
I wonder, is there a way to make template creation easier? Is that what TIM does?
Cheers, Dave.

Hi Dave,
TIM makes Image Factory easier to integrate with Rails apps (such as Aeolus Conductor).
As far as I'm aware, there is no way of creating the templates other than writing them by hand.
Though if I recall correctly, Jaromir Coufal is designing UI for building templates and deployables in Aeolus Conductor.
Maybe that could be extracted to a standalone tool/service afterwards.

Cheers, Dave.
