SecurityFocus News about OSS
by Siddharth Upmanyu
Hi Guys ...
just stumbled upon this 'securityfocus' news article
i would like to bring it to notice... do you think it talks about uncovered issues and potential bugs?
http://www.securityfocus.com/news/11417
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Security professionals warned developers on Thursday that they need to
be aware that their open-source repositories can now be easily mined,
allowing attackers to target programs that are likely to be flawed.
While Google could previously be used to look for specific strings, now
the search engine riffles through code that much better.
Google announced on Thursday
that the tool is now available for public use. Google Code Search digs
through open-source code repositories on the Internet, compiling the
large amount of source code available on the Web into an easily
searchable database. The tool allows Web surfers to find code that
matches certain regular expressions, and searches can be limited to
certain file types and licenses.
The security implications of Google's Code Search resemble those raised
by its original Web search engine. Google hacking--the term for using
Google queries to search for vulnerabilities in Web sites--is a popular way to find servers with specific flaws. Worms and viruses have attempted to use the search engine to create lists of potentially vulnerable victims to attack. And, in July, researchers warned that malicious code could easily be found using the search egnine.
"Google recommends developers use generally accepted good coding
practices including understanding the implications of the code they
implement and testing appropriately," the company said in a statement
e-mailed to SecurityFocus.
Code Search could also allow code auditors to warn people of
vulnerabilities in a program much faster. A central argument of
open-source software is that security is enhanced by more people
looking at the available code. In the long term, Google Code Search
could result in a greater number of eyes looking for flaws, Wysopal
said.

Re: [Fedora-marketing-list] Fedora Core 6 Pre release review

He is right indeed.
- the icon theme is indeed outdated, VERY outdated and missing many icons
- firefox 2.0 beta is great and stable to use for most things, definetly an advantage to include in Fedora than the old version
- fedora is the slowest Linux distro i've ever used! He is right to bash on fedora like that, my Intel P4 1Ghz machine with Windoze XP Pro boots in 7 seconds flat! while my Athon64 X2 3800 Dual Core boots Fedora Core 5 in a few minutes!!! jesus!
- the initial boot text is indeed ugly and geeky. We either have a full graphical boot, from start to end or we don't have one. Right now we are half and half, which looks very unfinished and ugly.
- yum had problems on my system as well, weird messages about cache not beign writable when it updated fontconfig and other stuff like that. Its also dead slow...
- Compiz was a fiasco as well. We've seen the videos from the Novel presentation and what we have in fedora is just two effects (out of 20?). Ofcourse it didn't work at first (like it happened with the author of the review) and even after i got it working i found too many bugs to actualy keep it running (ctrl-fX keys wouldn't work, couldn't change virtual desktops with ctrl-left arrow, etc).
- my media keys on my IBM ThinkPad wouldn't work either. I had to set them up manualy.
- The fedora sound theme is indeed a joke... thank god its disabled by default. The GDM beep is... well lets just say its better to be deaf than hearing the PC speaker beep every time GDM loads.
...
too late for FC6... lets hope things improve in FC7...

Unable to attend meeting today
by Alex
Folks,
I have just realized that the meeting is on for today, but I will not
be able to attend. One of my friends and colleagues here at Red Hat
has died in a tragic accident earlier this week, and I would like to
take tonight off.
Thank you,

Ohio Linux Fest 2006 Summary
by Jeffrey Tadlock
The Ohio Linux Fest held this past Saturday, September 30th was a great
success! The booth came together very nicely - we had Fedora T-Shirts,
Stickers, Core 5 DVDs and informational handouts available at the booth.
There were three of us primarily working the booth - Joe Connelly and
Brian Pepple. Tom "Spot" Callaway was also there, originally to hang
out with us at the Fedora booth, but ended up working the Red Hat booth
right next to us - though he was still a great help to us.
The announced crowd was just over 1200 people, between presentations the
aisles were quite packed. Our booth saw lots of foot traffic with
people ranging from new to Linux to having used it since Red Hat 6.x or
earlier and wondering what Fedora was up to.
Nearly all comments were favorable to Fedora, many people were running
Fedora in some fashion - either on their own PCs or on servers for
businesses they worked for. There were a few recurring questions
through the day, some of which where:
* Yum is slow was one of the complaints we kept hearing. It was a
pleasure to let people know that there was an updated yum in Core 6 that
was aimed at taking on any speed issues.
* I had several questions regarding the Fedora Directory Server - mainly
in regards to features it offered. There certainly seems to be interest
in this.
* We heard what I thought to be a number of comments alluding to an
animosity between the Fedora Project and Red Hat. I am not quite sure
why that thought is out there.
* There were several questions about who we worked for, etc. It was
nice to reply with we were just members of the Fedora Project community
helping out. I think it really helped reinforce that there is a lot of
room for community involvement in the project.
* And of course there were lots of when is Core 6 coming out and what
new features will be in it.
Later in the afternoon we also had a "Birds of a Feather" session. Tom
Callaway was there and was an excellent and knowledgeable speaker and it
was great to have him there. Some of the items brought up were Fedora
and multimedia (mp3's, DVD playback, etc), Xen and virtualization and
new features and improvements in Core 6.
All in all it was a great show. Lots of fun for everyone involved I
think. I was very happy with how the booth turned out and I think
Fedora was very well represented there. I want to thank all the people
that helped get me the materials and information I needed for this event
- including Max and David Barzilay.
And last but not least, here are some of the pictures from the show (I
may be adding more as I receive them from the others):

Fedora Country Spokesman
by Francesco Ugolini
I've a proposal that consist in the creation of a sub-project of
Fedora Ambassador: Fedora Country Spokesman.
FCS would be an Ambassador with some skills in writing (in his
language) and a good proficency talking with other. He also would be
able to work strictly with Marketing and Documentation Project,
providing to the media fc release notes, press release etc...
Every month he would have to write a report of country's ambassador
activity and reporting the fedora presence in the country and, yes, in
the media.
It's an idea, what do you think ?
P.S. I will glad to working on this sub-project.
Thanks for your attention.
