[Fedora-ambassadors-list] Report : Event Lan
by Chitlesh GOORAH
Report;
This LAN gaming was a 2 days event.
My speech had a duration of one and half hour, which was about OSS and
how easy is to use them.
Things i've discussed:
- mp3 versus ogg
- licenses : GPL, Propriety, BSD , which was very interactive.
- intelligent downloading with yum
- XGL, I used my girlfriend's dapper to do that.
In the end, there was questions, lots of questions. I was surprised.
Nevertheless, there was some propositions too,
A guy told me that he shifted from Fedora to Ubuntu, just because he
did a yum update from FC4 to FC5 which failed. At his disposal was
ubuntu breezy, so he gave it a try. In accordance to him, there is a
lack of tutorials for users (for FC) that missing compared to Ubuntu.
See http://www.ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=100 (note he wasn't
talking about patents softs)
Eg. Which I tried myself and gave up to sleep.
When Fedora Core 5 is installed on a USB harddisk ( which any new
linux user will do), after a successfull installation, it won't boot
from the USB just because the drivers are not modprobe before seeking
the kernel. Some of the linux users gave up, Fedora for Ubuntu for
this reason, because they found a howto some how on the internet. e.g
what my girlfriend did :
http://zerlinna.blogspot.com/2006/03/dual-boot-on-external-usb-drive-with...
Most of the linux users there are using Ubuntu, for the mere simple
reason Ubuntu's ShipIt. These guys don't go to each linux events which
are hardly enough in their locality. So no Fedora DVDs!
In fact, I think, many users have given a try to Fedora, because they
heard so much about it. But in the end, they don't have enough
materials online to continue their journey with it. Personnally it is
something the Fedora Project should work on. Fedora Marketing is
working good, but the achievement is not durable.

If it was spying, they'd be wearing black clothes and jumping in through the
ceiling :)
But seriously, an ambassador went along to an install party to see "how they
did it", so that Fedora ones can take any good ideas from it.
No harm in that, is there?

[Fedora-ambassadors-list] Are we in a state of Chaos?
by Tejas Dinkar
Well, the question is in the subject.
Is the ambassadors project in utter chaos, and losing focus?
First the ambassadors is the entire marketing initiative
Then, we announce ambassadors is strictly for spreading events, and the
marketing list is for all else.
And now, we are bringing non-ambassador stuff back to the ambassadors
meetings?
And the meetings...
We seem to be spending as much time arbitrarily disciplining ambassadors
for `speaking out of turn`, as we are getting the work done.
I hate to say this, but I don't know if the current team of lxmaier +
tchung as chair of the meeting is working out :(, no offense to either
lx or thomas.
May I please volunteer EvilBob to perhaps lead the next meeting, if he
is available?
Perhaps it is time for each ambassador to rethink why (s)he is part of
the project, and what they hope to contribute.

[Fedora-ambassadors-list] Let's talk about stuff, OR Taking the focus off events a bit
by Alex
Folks,
I have been thinking about what makes us look so awfully
event'centric, while we have so many other things going, like the Free
Media, Word of Mouth, Sponsored Media, and other exciting projects
going on?
So here is the solution:
>From now on, before reviewing the events, and right after the Famsco
update in the Ambassadors meeting, there will be a section dedicated
to project reports, in which people belonging to the particular
project can report on their activity.
This will help us know what is going on besides the events, and also
to hold the Ambassadors accountable for the projects they run, so we
can assure excellence of all our projects.
See http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ambassadors/Schedule for the new
Schedule item, and add your own project to the list!
Cheers,
a

[Fedora-ambassadors-list] FUDCon San Francisco 2006?
by Karsten Wade
Is anyone interested in having a FUDCon this year to coincide with
LinuxWorld San Francisco? The target date would be 18 August.
Alternately, is there another great San Francisco/Silicon Valley event
that we could attach to or pair up with to have a FUDCon?
Our big challenges are:
1. A venue
2. A draw
I saw recently how valuable and useful the Boston University space was
(mad props to Matt, Paul, and all the BU folks). Good facilities and
early access are essential.
What draws people to the FUDCon? Good speakers, that's one thing. How
many Fedora developers are in the Bay Area?
Another draw is being connected to a big open source attractor such as
LinuxWorld. Except, uh, LWCE isn't the same kind of FLOSS draw as it
was in the past. Is there something better?
Planning to commence here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FUDCon/FUDConSanFrancsico2006
I know Guntharp is out there. What other Fedora Ambassadors and project
contributors are local to Northern California?

[Fedora-ambassadors-list] Meeting timing
by Russell John
Thomas Chung wrote:
> Also, we have a Fedora Ambassadors Meeting tomorrow at 2006-04-20 22:00 UTC

Hi Thomas,
I won't be able to join the meeting as it'll be 4 in the morning my
place. Ambassadors from my region including the Indian Ambassadors
will face the same problem if they don't suffer from insomnia...
Is it possible to stick to the 14:00 UTC timing for our meetings?
Thanks,
Russell
