The fedora project and local forums
by Sebastian Vahl
Hi.
I've described in my "hello"-mail that I want to start a discussion about the
status of local forums inside/outside the project and also the contact with
them. There are many international community websites out there [1]. But ATM
their only relationship to the project is that they use fedora. That's a
point you have also noticed in a FAD last year [2].
So I would like to talk about how to integrate them more into the project,
talk to them and so on. In my opinion forums and esp. local forums are the
users first touch with fedora (besides the installation itself). Of course
only for those that like forums - if they like IRC or mailinglists more they
can use the _official_ irc channels and mailinglists (and also in their
language). But the forums are normally called "community websites" - for
different reasons. But if we (as fedora project not as a lonely ambassador)
can get in contact with them and they get more involved in the project (as a
forum, not as a normal person) this could be a benefit for all of us.
The first question here is if you have already discussed this in the past? If
not it would be a good start to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of
this. I have some ideas for this but first I'd like to hear your opinion. :)
Sebastian
P.S.: If you hink that this question is absolutely wrong on this list, please
say "stop". :)

german KDE LiveCD for Linuxtag?
by Sebastian Vahl
Hi.
Some of you may know that I'm involved in the kde livecd creation. The
official kde livecd is lacking translations. I've released a
german one for test3 and will do so for f7 final.
Maybe it would be interesting for the Linuxtag (remember, it's in
germany :) ) to have also a german based kde livecd? If so I would be
happy to create this one. Just let me know. :)

Hello Fellows
Some of you have made a cross in the column "Setup booth" [1]. Now we
need to know who is able to help us doing the setup of the booth.
So far we are going to meet at noon (12am) at the east entrance of Messe
Berlin. The date is Tuesday, May 29th 2007.
Please sign yourself up at the "Booth Setup" page.
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraEvents/LinuxTag/LinuxTag2007/BoothSetup
I guess everybody would like when the setup is done fast because then we
can do a little sightseeing. And everybody can attend the FAD at the
evening. The booth has to be setup on Tuesday.
Regards,
Fabian

Report: Upstate SC Hamfest
by David Nalley
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

At the last moment I acquired a booth at the Upstate SC Hamfest
(upstatehamfest.org). This is the largest amateur radio event in South
Carolina. It typically draws a couple thousand attendees. Unfortunately
a torrential thunderstorm dampened attendance a bit, and I would
guesstimate there were around 1,000 people present. I partnered with the
local LUG to come help, talk with people and be a place that individuals
could go to for local help.
I gave a short 15 minute impromprtu presentation on how similar F/LOSS
and Amateur Radio are - people that like to build antennas, modify and
build radio transceivers, and even more imporantly, understand how the
internals of their electronics work are a natural fit for open source,
because they can tinker, build, or just look at how it works.
The response was relatively good, we distributed about 150 DVDs, mostly
x86, and made some nice contacts, including the ARRL (national amateur
radio association) Assistant Section Manager who offered us booth in two
upcoming hamfests in North Carolina in the fall.
Overall it went well, we should have asked for better booth placement -
and it would be really nice to have some Fedora videos along the same
lines as the RH 'Truth Happens' video. But, live and learn I suppose.
Partnering with a LUG gave some 'tangible' warm fuzzies, and a local
group to ask for help with items.
