Software Freedom Day 2008 (Philippines)
by Heherson Pagcaliwagan
Seems like *(a)fedoraproject.org was out so i'm resending my report... typos
and all :D
I was waiting for Ma'am Magie to post the pics of our recently concluded SFD
celebration but since she's still probably recuperating from the event, let
me, in her stead, report what happened last Saturday at the National
Computer Center here in Quezon City.
Official registration was supposed to start 8:30 AM but when I passed by the
venue around 7:30AM on my way to my office, students were already milling
around the complex and a provincial bus was already parked beside the venue.
Talk about being early! When I returned around 8:45AM, the place was already
packed and Ma'am Magie was already going on circles :)
I was designated as the booth man by virtue of seniority :D *(Truth be told,
Ma'am Magie was busy organizing the whole event while Sir Engels was giving
speeches)*. The Fedora booth consisted of a tarpaulin, flyers, two LiveUSB
Station posters and my office laptop featuring Fedora 9. I originally
planned to bring my Asus eee loaded with eeedora to the event but I was
locked out of our office with no keys -- stupid me. A friend later took pity
on me and sent for his two laptops *(both of which are Windows)* and
together we burned away those USB sticks.
Apart from burning LiveUSBs, I gave away flyers, cajoled SFD-goers to try
Fedora 9 using my laptop, gave impromptu talks about the merit of Fedora and
its difference with other Linux distributions (most of the time - Ubuntu),
met students, teachers and other professionals and had a blast the whole
time. Talking particularly with the kids made me feel like a rock star :)
The major drawer of our booth was certainly the LiveUSB creation. It would
have been FreeMedia but early on, we have decided to do away with the
distribution of DVDs and LiveCDs because that would entail spending money we
don't really have much of. What meager funds we have scrapped together were
funneled into the whole event. I think our FreeMedia program could expect a
lot more requests coming from the Philippines - I just gave away its URL.
Either way, we had registered around 50 individuals who wanted to hear more
about the Fedora Project and possibly contribute themselves. These included
teachers who want their students contribute as ambassadors and/or
developers, students who wanted to make a case study in the use of Fedora
and professionals who are interested in holding seminars/trainings in
deploying Fedora in their line of work.
I'm now helping these guys get onboard the project. This is just first event
so future events would certainly be better.

EventBox becomes reality
by Clint Savage
So I've been working pretty much to get this EventBox[1] idea off the
ground. It looks like things are going now. I've loaded some stuff
into it and just need to make sure I've not missed anything and I'll
be sending it off to Jeffrey this coming week or so.
I've uploaded some pictures of the new Pelican 1610 series box (not
too shabby) which should hold all of the items on the list quite
nicely. Enjoy the pictures.
Cheers,
Clint

Event Report:: Benedict College
by David Nalley
Another person that I met at the Palmetto Open Source Conference this
year was <a href="http://with-robot.blogspot.com/">Dr. Hong Jiang</a>
a professor at <a href="http://benedict.edu">Benedict College</a>. She
invited me to come speak to computer science and other students. I was
told around 40-100 would show up, but when everything was said and
done I think the number was closer to 120-150. The lecture room was
standing room only. Apparently there are about 40 people in the class
that I was talking to, but the event had been well publicized ahead of
time, and lots of students attended, including the Vice President of
the college, the Assistant Dean of the School of Science Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics as well as 3-4 professors. I talked a bit
about Fedora and more directly about the benefits of using Open Source
as an educational tool. I talked about some of the opportunities that
existed to get involved with Fedora and OLPC - and of course the XO
that I brought along received lots of attention. In addition I passed
out over 100 Fedora 9 LiveCDs.There were a number of questions - to
the point that we had to limit them due to schedule constraints on the
room.
After the presentation I received a short tour of the campus, was
introduced to the campus <a
href="http://www.benedict.edu/divisions/stdnta/campus_safety/staff/bc-campus_sa...">Police
Chief</a>, as well as several other faculty and staff members, and
enjoyed a wonderful lunch.
The group was very receptive - and I have a number of follow ups to
make already.

Fedora Project in Hungary - University of Szeged
by Joerg Simon
Dear members of The Open Source Laboratory [1],
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Joerg Simon. I am an active
community contributor at the Fedora Project.
The Fedora Project is a Free Open Source Linux Development Platform, where the
community strives for the best and latest software technologies to the Open
Source community. As a Fedora Ambassador, my major task involves in working
with volunteers all over the world, who contribute with respect to their
expertise to Fedora. [2]
Personally i love your country since my early youth, i value the People from
Hungary very much and i know that many smart Hungarians have the potential to
contribute to the Fedora Project in many ways. [3]
We have some Hungarians who help us with localization (like many other
contributors around the world).
We have valuable contributors in your neighbour countries but as you may have
noticed, we have no representatives in your Country [4] who can help us find
the best Event in order to present the Fedora Project and get in touch with
the local educational institutions to show them the benefits of contributing
to the Fedora Project.
In November 2008, the "Fedora Ambassador Day EMEA" will take place. [5]
One goal will be to extend our work in Hungary and it would be great, if you
can help us to enhance our presence at a local Event (booth,speech,...) in
Hungary in 2009. [6]
With our recent legal status Fedora EMEA, we have the means to help you
promote Fedora. Let us know if you are interested about those means.
We also had community contributors excelled in various key leading positions,
such as Fedora Electronic Lab architect, Fedora Spins maintainer, Fedora
Marketing Manager,....
We would appreciate if you can forward this email to those who might be
interested in contributing for the Fedora Project as a community member.
Thank you for your cooperation in the Open Source ECO system.
Regards Joerg Simon
