FOSDEM, my thanks
by Francesco Ugolini
Unfortunately I couldn't join FOSDEM 2009, but I've truly enjoyed
reading all the reports about this amazing events.
Thank you for all your work, everyone has done something great and I'm
really proud to be a Fedora Ambassador: your passion and you work say
clearly what a community is.
I hope to read more reports and enjoy this experience (even if virtually).
Best regards

HAR 2009 Event
by Yaakov Nemoy
Hey all,
This weekend, spurred on by Fosdem, i've put a wiki page for HAR 2009.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/HAR2009
In short, HAR2009 is a hacking camp, with a very unstructured style. I
will try to attend, and if any other Ambassadors or contributers out
there would also like to come, it might be good to put together a
Fedora track/village. I encourage everyone to sign up soon, as the
ticket price is on a deep discount for the next few weeks. I also
recommend people to submit papers to the main track, if you have
anything of interest.
Meanwhile, i would like to see if there is any interest in a
mini-fudcon, or a FAD as well. Events like these are a great time to
get together to work on a project. Please let me know if you are
interested, so we can begin planning this.
Finally, while this is a camping event, there are luxury cabins
available for anyone who prefers not to 'rough it'. They are a bit
more expensive, but if the price is split, it is not any more
expensive than a hotel for 4 days. We can coordinate sharing one if
there are enough requests. Also, if you would like to bring your
family, or just can't bear to be away from them from too long, there
is also a family village there. While i describe this event as a bit
radical, the rules for the family village are very strict and above
all, bad behavior is not tolerated anywhere at the event.
Hope to see you there,
Yaakov

by Paul W. Frields
I wanted to extend my thanks to the many, *many* Fedora Ambassadors
who came to FOSDEM to show support, staff the booth, meet users and
developers, and show what an incredible community Fedora has. I look
forward to continuing to read your FOSDEM show reports on the Planet
Fedora feed. Thank you for your time and effort, and I hope you
enjoyed the show!

My thanks for FOSDEM !!
by Thomas Canniot
Hello all !
Just a quick mail to thank everybody who was at fosdem promoting
fedora. It was really cool to see news faces around motivated to go to
people and show how fedora is good for every one who is in it.
My special big thanks to Frederic Hornain, who's been dealing with
FOSDEM organization in a smart way since 4 or 5 years. He's been the
first I met when I first attend, and I was really happy to meet him
again.
Once more, thank you very much for everything !

IMPORTANT: FOSDEM Reimbursements
by Max Spevack
Hi,
If you need reimbursements for anything related to FOSDEM, it is
*ESSENTIAL* that you either give me your receipts in person at FOSDEM,
or that you follow the steps on this page:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Reimbursements
These reimbursements need to be in Red Hat's Q4 budget, which means that
I need to get all my expense reports filed by this coming Friday (Feb
13).
So please make sure you get any of your FOSDEM reimbursements in the
pipeline as soon as possible.
My deep thanks to all who came to FOSDEM, and helped to make it such a
great event. There are so many Fedora Ambassadors here that in some
cases I have only been able to shake your hand and say hello briefly,
but I hope that I have a chance to talk with more folks on Sunday.

Install Fest : BCREC
by Ratnadeep Debnath
What : Install Fest cum Talk on Linux/FOSS.
When : Friday, the 30th of January '09.
Where : Dr. B. C. Roy Engineering College, Durgapur.
By : The Linux Users' Group of Durgapur, DGPLUG.
Head Count : 100-120.
Systems Installed : 10. [most of the first year students have not
bought a system yet...expecting another few installations when they do
so.]
Media Distributed : 60 (appx.) [Fedora 10 DVDs and Fedora 10 Live-CD
KDE were distributed]
Feedback : A huge success, demands of conducting another one.
[working on it already...sometime in the middle of Feb. probably
...thinking of introducing GCC this time.]
The event went out as planned. Since the audience had no prior
knowledge about Linux or FOSS, we began with talking on FOSS and
Linux. The '4F' of FOSS was explained and other advantages were
discussed. Also, we emphasized on the difference between the EULA and
GPL license agreements, also emphasized that Linux is not affected by
viruses, and is highly secured. We then spoke about the Linux
filesystem and explained that it does not require any defragmention.
The audience were really amazed at and impressed by the advantages of
Linux over Windows. Then, we informed them about the different
distributions of Linux available and made them realise their "Freedom
of Choice" and that there can be a day without "Microsoft Windows".
Gradually, we moved forward and began installation. The distro to be
installed was Fedora 10. Step-by-Step installation procedure was being
shown via a projector(we used Virtual Box to virtually install on a
system and connected t to the projector). Simultaneously, 10 DGPLUG
volunteers who were guiding the students with the installation of
Fedora 10 in their computer systems.
We again resumed our discussion when the package installation had
started. Then we emphasized on The Linux Users' Group of Durgapur,
DGPLUG and its activities in increasing Linux awareness in the area.
We discussed about the ongoing Bijra Project (bijra.dgplug.org),
showed the audience some videos on OLPC, Truth Happens, History of
Fedora. After the installation was done, we did a session on vim and
then on gcc. Then we showed the Kdeedu tools, the Gnome and KDE
Desktop environments, the Compiz effects ( it really captivated the
audience who had by then become the spectators), the Sound and Video
applications, Pidgin, XChat and others. We finally wrapped everything
up with the "I'm Fedora" video.
Finally, at around 4:30 p.m. everyone went back satisfied.
Regards,
The Linux Users' Group of Durgapur, DGPLUG

FAmNA Polos: Order yours by Tuesday, February 10th
by Pascal Calarco
Hi Fedora Ambassadors in the US and Canada --
So far we have an order of 11 more polos from 9 more Ambassadors in the
US and Canada. I have sent the details and shipping addresses of the
orders already placed on the wiki to the vendor. I have three polos on
hand from previous orders which I will ship out directly from here.
There is still time to order a Fedora Ambassador polo. Add your name to
the wiki page at:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ambassadors/NA
and follow up with an e-mail to me indicating your shipping address.
I'll then issue a PayPal invoice to you at your e-mail address.
Shipping should be within 3-4 weeks or so.
If any of those who've placed an order already need a polo ASAP, I have
two XL and one L on hand. Jon Stanley, if you are going to SCALE and
need one for then, I can ship these to you now. Does anyone need a
large polo who is going to SCALE? Let me know. Larry, sorry I don't
have any stock your size. Thanks!
