- Start thinking about and filling in a Q1 budget
* Tasks [https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ambassadors/NA/Tasks]
- No report
* Open Floor
- ke4qqq resumed discussion of the XO developer program. We need to
get these moved out of our hands and into the hands of developers
and be able to followup to show that good stuff is happening. Lots
of enthusiastic volunteers to help.
- Next meeting is in 2 weeks on February 17th and we'll set our schedule
for the following quarter then.
I would again like to thank all the participants, especially the new
ambassadors joining us for the first time tonight. And a special thanks
to Mike McGrath for taking the time to meet with ambassadors so they can
better understand one critical area within the Fedora Project.

Upcoming deadlines
by David Nalley
Thanks to Matt Domsch's excellent post I thought I'd bring up some
important dates for some of the conferences that are quickly
approaching.
See Matt's post for more detail: http://domsch.com/blog/?p=30
# Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit, April 8-10 in San Francisco,
CA. Proposals due Feb 15.
# Linux Symposium, July 13-17 in Montreal, Canada. Call for Papers due Feb 28.
# OSCON, July 20-24 in San Jose, California. Call for Participation due Feb 3.
# OpenSourceWorld (formerly LinuxWorldExpo), August 10-13 in San
Francisco, CA. Call for Papers due Feb 20.
This month there are four conferences whose CFP ends. The closest one
ends tomorrow.
PLEASE, if you are interested in presenting a topic, please propose it
to these groups. Even if you are worried about the financial ability
to go, please propose something and we'll help you. I'd far rather
spend a little money and have an Ambassador presenting and showing off
some of the good things going on in Fedora than have us either not
show up or just show up with a booth.
Your material doesn't even have to be original - I just saw a
presentation on Fedora Planet from Michael DeHaan that I plan on using
in two weeks. There are scores of such presentations out there.
Precious few of us are what you would call eloquent speakers, but for
the most part Fedora excites us, so please share the excitement with
others and pitch a talk.

Fedora

Dear Ambassadors,
right now some so called FOSS events appear with a target audience which is
more focused for government agencies and bussines. To have Speakers at that
events could be a great chance for Fedora to attract them for sponsoring or
contribution. Here are some points i have made already in a discussion with a
small group of people before. Francesco suggested to invite all Ambassadors to
participate in this discussion.
There are several topics that we could place to attract government agencies
and business, i am sure they will not know about that right now - and i hope
that we find more here on that list - or like Francesco suggested collect in a
WikiPage.
- Company & Inhouse Builds! - a company who build software as FOSS or modify
FOSS for their own Enterprise Servers can use the benefit of Fedora Processes
and Infrastructure as well as the wide spreading of our Distribution with
contributing to Fedora + EPEL - this is good for the company and for Fedora.
This could be enhanced by a technical Track, to show them how they can package
and spread their Software within own Fedora Spins ...
- Community Consulting! - show them the brilliance of our technology with
spacewalk, cobbler, func, puppet, FDS, KVM, FEL, our OLPC Success... Talk
about the possibility that a Fedora Contributor teaches a company for a
donation to the Fedora Project technicaly to see what the future will bring
and to use that knowledge for their enterprise enviroments because this
Enterprise Servers are build from our roots (or whatever) ...
- Build a FOSS Career! - show the government why they should support using and
teaching of FOSS in educational institutions
Show them success stories we have learned from Kushal or Chitlesh or Rodrigo
or Paul - show the bussines why they should hire FOSS Contributors (peer
certification, ...) - show the bussines why they should sponsor local FOSS
Communities ... - show them how to become a FOSS Contributor inside Fedora.
Imagine a government which decides that kids in school get teached leading
edge software without licencing cost and with the possibility to enhance and
change that. Imagine a Fedora Artwork Contest in all Schools of your Country
We can enrich Events with valuable content and give them real FOSS
Partnership Spirit.

Fedora 11: What do we expect?
by Angel
Hi,
It´s almost one year, I am with the Fedora community. In this one year, I
met so many great people from Fedora community. I have visited hundreds of
forums, mailing lists. I meet so many people who uses Fedora (also who
doesn´t). I have learned so many things from them. Some of them are happy
using Fedora and some them are not. And I think, as a community member, it´s
my responsibility to inform you guys about some issues that I think, why
people doesnt like to use Fedora or switching to other distros. And
something, that we need to fix.
1. Need to include RPM Fusion with Fedora 11 default installation (but not
activated, like Fedora test repo or raw hide, as we don´t include
proprietary software). If this is not possible (may be because of some legal
issue), then I´ll say, we need a working GUI solution to install RPM Fusion.
According to RPM Fusion <http://rpmfusion.org/Configuration> they explained
a GUI solution to install the repo, but most of the time, it doesnt work at
all (I myself, tested thousands time, also so many people there has, who
tried, I searched for the solution, everyone give me CLI solution). And
KPackage Kit can´t install it. So we need a solution that will work for
GNOME and KDE both.
2. Need a GUI solution to install nVidia and ATI driver, that will
automatically install the appropriate driver (Ubuntu has a GUI *Hardware
Drivers *options that automatically download and install the driver, also
they have Envy, its another GUI solution)
3. Need a GUI solution to install all kind of proprietary Multimedia codecs
(Ubuntu has ubuntu-restricted-extras, they simply select it from package
manager, and it installs all kind of codecs including JAVA)
4. Need a complete GUI solution to install softwares offline from cache
(ofcourse if it can fix the dependency) or DVD Media.
5. There has a very easy way to install a rpm package from CLI (one single
package, that has not any dependency issue or if it has, it´s possible to
install the package by ignoring it). But from Fedora 9, GUI double click rpm
install doesnt work at all. So, we need a GUI solution of it.
6. Need to add CD/DVD repo with Fedora 11 default installation, so people
can use DVD to install softwares.
7. From /etc/yum.conf we need to edit keepcache=0 to 1 as default. So
people can use the cache to install software later or to some other PC.
Many of you will say, why we are following Ubuntu? Well, I´ll say, no, we
are not following them. This is the truth, what users want. And many of you
will think, this ideas are stupid, but truth is If this issues we can fix,
for sure, so many people will start using Fedora. My apologies, if I am
wrong anywhere.

"The Fedora Project is out front for you, leading the advancement of free,
open software and content." - I can't read "proprietary software" there at
all. As the sentence of our homepage says, we're focussed to free software
and content, not to proprietary and closed source stuff.
Speaking from the view of an ambassador, I hope, that you don't communicate
ever such statements as above to users when acting as ambassador or when
representing Fedora. Surely you didn't meant the sentence such hard as you
have written it, nevertheless it seems you're lacking basics about Fedora.
Please read http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/ForbiddenItems carefully in order
to understand what Fedora is doing and why things are so as they are - and
especially regarding proprietary software, there called "forbidden items".
The unlucky thing is, that third-party vendors are making the installation
of their software unnecessarily hard by themself. So if they would license
their software as open source, it would be much more easy to integrate them
into Fedora or even ship their software, driver or whatelse as part of our
Linux distribution.
As ambassador your work around proprietary software should be to show stuff
mentioned above to the Fedora users out there and explain them, that they
need to get in touch with their closed source vendor and bother the vendor
hard enough, that the licensing maybe gets changed or better integrateable
(e.g. the vendor optimizes that by the use of own Fedora repositories) into
Fedora and other Linux distributions.
Most important thing around is: Proprietary software itself must not be bad
at all, I understand that companies need to make money. But if then a user
complains about, he or she needs to get pointed by an ambassador to the
cause of that. We can't solve things, we are not responsible for. Of course
the people supporting RPM Fusion's non-free repository are doing a very
well job. But nevertheless it would be better, if we wouldn't have need for
such a repository at all - I think we all can agree on this.
So please get more involved into Fedora and try to get the lacking basics
about Fedora. Ask people around the project, eg. Fedora Ambassadors, Fedora
Ambassador Mentors or similar. This mailinglist can also be used to clarify
such things, but avoid cross-posting over several mailing lists.
Finally, I didn't want to blame you at all here, futhermore trying to lower
your current deficits. Hopefully you're getting it also that way - thanks.
Greetings,
Robert
