A classroom session on VIM
by Ankur Sinha
Hello,
I intend to hold a classroom session on VIM on Tuesday, December 12 at
2000 UTC. Please mark your calendars. :)
To convert it into local time, you can run the following command in your
terminal:
> date -d '2011-12-12 2000 UTC'
The session will be at #fedora-classroom on Freenode.
It will concentrate on teaching people how to use VIM correctly, not the
way most people do -> in insert mode ;). It's a beginners' session, so
we'll start from scratch. We'll try to keep in within an hour.
** Prerequisits: please install vim, vim-X11, vim-outliner
> su -c 'yum install vim vim-X11 vim-outliner'
CCing the Ambassadors', fedora-india lists
For more information on Fedora Classroom sessions, please refer to:

[X-post] Attention: Ambassadors from India
by Ankur Sinha
Hello all,
I hope you're all doing well. According to this page[1], there are 31
ambassadors in Fedora India.
I'd very gently like to remind all 31 of us of the duties of a Fedora
Ambassador[2]:
> Duties and functions
>
> organizes the general structure of Ambassadors project;
> distributes resources globally;
> organizes global initiatives;
> coordinates membership management and the mentoring initiative.
> promotes the cohesion between Ambassadors and Regions;
> nominates the Ambassadors Membership Administrator;
> promotes the diffusion of the Fedora Project's principles.
> resolve any disputes brought before it
>
I'd request each one to please check how many of the duties listed above
one is carrying out. If you feel you're doing them, well enough,
however, if you aren't doing *any* of these, I'd request you to please
find ways of carrying these duties out. (The other alternative being to
respectfully hand in your ambassador status. You can be a developer, a
contributor to another team, but that does not make you an ambassador by
default. It is voluntary, but once you sign up, you are accountable to
the community.)
I'm very disappointed with the response to the Local Contacts scheme[3].
It was supposed to be India-centric, but more foreigners have signed up
than Indians! The mail was sent out to the -india and freemedia mailing
lists, and I have, therefore, received more help from the freemedia
mailing list here! Out of the entire list of 31 Indian Ambassadors, only
*2* have signed up (that is *one* person other than me). Some of us are
in the free media program, other than that, no one seems interested.
Please contribute. Spreading Fedora is the *main* duty of an ambassador.
If you're not doing this, what are you doing? It's an earnest request.
I'd also like to remind you that in spite of repeated requests for help
on the freemedia front to the India list, we still have very few active
contributors there.

FAMSCo 2011 Election Result
by Suresh Packiyarajah
Dear all,
Just i have read blog post from Fabian Affolter(known as fab) via planet
fedoraproject.i would like to share it again to the ambassadors list
because of we are having 545 people but it's seems 104 votes(~19%) have
been made.yesterday i tried to verify how many of us have been voted but it
is clear now.
It makes sense Just ~10 minutes is more than enough to read and cast your
vote. Does this mean that they are lazy to do at least this?
Please have a look at the original post[1] by Fabian.

Report for Release Party F16 Silicon Valley
by Mark Terranova
Hello Fedorans, I am pleased to give a report on our F16 release party for
Silicon Valley. It was a success. There were 15+ folks in attendance. We
consider ourselves lucky to have been able to have the event at the Hacker
Dojo, as well as our sponsor Alison Chaiken
http://events.hackerdojo.com/event/1155026-fedora-16-release-party-instal...
We
had a mix of folks that were already part of Fedora, to those that knew
very little about Linux.
We had a BBQ of hotdogs in honor of the Beefy Miracle. This IS California
though, so we DID have vegetarian dogs also. We had a talk on Fedora, it's
Foundations, why it is so important to FOSS, and a preview of F17. We also
had a very yummy cake (with penguins on it). In addition to the regular
swag of stickers, tattoos, and shirts- we had a few prizes. We had an
assortment of USB flash drives, and a grand prize of a Beefy Miracle shirt.
Our pics of the event can be seen here

This was our first official event for the newly formed Bay Area Mentoring
Fedorans - BAMF https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BAMF expect to hear more
about this venture soon...

Ambassadors Leave of Absence
by Greg I Kerr
Hi folks,
Many of you probably know me as a campus ambassador at Northeastern
University during my tenure as a Fedora Ambassador. During this time I
have had a great time doing everything from attending the Red Hat
Summit to working around campus to promote Fedora. To be honest, my
favorite part of the "job" is when I help a frustrated new user
resolve their issues and get to see them become happy FOSS advocates.
In order to focus on my internship, I am requesting an official leave
of absence from January 1st, 2012 to April 31st, 2012. This is the
duration of my internship. Since I won't be able to fulfill any of the
normal duties of an ambassador during that time, I think it is best to
officially step aside. My biggest disappointment is that I will miss
FUDcon.
I look forward to continuing to serve in my role in the meantime.
Regards,
Greg Kerr

New Ambadassadors; Chris Whitehorn, Lord Drachenblut, Andy Grover
by Mark Terranova
Hello Fedorans, it is with great pride I welcome some great additions to
Fedora's Ambassadors program.
Chris Whitehorn is a great addition to the project. He has been involved
since Core 1. He is keen on advocating for Linux in general- with great
emphasis on what we do in the Fedora Project. His contributions have
already been great, now he will do them as official Ambadassador. Even
before officially joining, he has been very helpful in local release
events. He was also very influential in getting me to see the benefits of
the Fedora Project in the first place (along with Larry, Karsten, Grant and
many others.) http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Sexycatsinhats
Lord D is a FOSS advocate that has a reputation that proceeds him. He is an
advocate for Free & Open Source Software. He organizes the Indiana Linux
Fest http://www.indianalinux.org/cms/ I saw him tabling for ILF at Ohio
Linux Fest and was very impressed. When he contacted me about being an
Ambassador, I KNEW he would be a great addition to the project. He knows
how important Fedora is to Linux in general. He also requested we put
together a FAD (Fedora Activity Day) for ILF, and we are planning it now.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Lorddrachenblut
Andy Grover joined Red Hat earlier this year, and has been working on iscsi
target support. This has led him to become much more involved with
Fedora, naturally :) His goal was to table for Fedora at the Open Source
Day at Grace Hopper
2011 (http://gracehopper.org/2011/) where 3000+ technical women
convened. More about the event on his blog
http://groveronline.com/2011/11/fedora-and-open-source-at-grace-hopper-2011/
When
we spoke on the phone, it was very clear what a great addition he is to
Fedora. He has plans to do other tech conferences in Portland OR.

FAD at Linux Conference Australia 2012
by Caius Chance
Hi,
Linux Conference Australia 2012 will be held in Melbourne (Ballarat), on 16 - 20 January 2012:
http://linux.conf.au/
Let's start the discussion in terms of attendance, flight, hotel, etc of ambassadors!
As a regretting FAD last year affected by severe flooding in Brisbane, we can organise a FAD next to the conf period again this time.
Will start a wiki when there are some "yes" in this thread. :)

Fedora is the 2º most used Linux system
by Nuno Rodrigues
Hello
I have some good news for everyone who is envolved on Fedora:
"According to the site DistroWatch, Ubuntu, in the last 3 months, was the second most widely used Linux system for the fourth position, having been excluded from the three distributions used worldwide.
The table shows that the Mint continues to lead, but the Fedora moves to second position (previously in the third) and openSUSE to third (formerly fourth).
According to experts, this decline may be explained by the introduction of the Unity interface in Ubuntu for users new to Linux, is more complicated than the GNOME version 3, still used in other distributions from the top of the table."
We need to continue working on Fedora for continue because we are so close to the first place. People know that Fedora have what they need as ambassadors and we must pass on those.
