My FAmSCo goals - please help!

Hi there, Jiri already sent a mail about his goals last week [1], and you may wonder what all this is about. So before I tell you a little bit about my goals, let me tell you a little bit about where this idea comes from. At the end of 2010, the Fedora board decided to agree on "strategic goals" for Fedora, so they can focus their work in 2011. When we looked back at what had happened with these goals one year later at FUDCon Blacksburg, we realized that hardly anything was achieved [2]. The problem was that the goals were noble, but very abstract and progress was hard to measure. It was impossible to really reach them and for an individual, there was not much to do as every problem required a lot of people to overcome it. So we decided to try something different. Each board member picked their own goals. Something to work on and something that can be achieved. We don't tell anybody what do to or let, but by championing our own goals, we lead by example. Every board member is to show the community what they want to work on and how they approach a problem. This can encourage others to help or to work on their own projects. As FAmSCo chair, I suggested that we do the same for all FAmSCo members. I told everybody to pick 2-3 goal and present it on the ambassadors mailing list. Our goals don't necessarily need to benefit the ambassadors, but of course it would be nice if they did. Here is what I have come up with so far: 1. Improve budget management: We want to make payments for our contributors easier and faster. Budget needs to be more transparent. We want to move decisions from FAmSCo to the local communities. Reporting for credit card holders needs to become easier. We are working on all this for a while already but hardly made any progress, because there are big changes inside of Red Hat. It is unclear who will manage our budget in the future and we don't even have exact figures of our spending in the last year. So as soon as there is some progress, we can start working on this. We already set up a new trac instance 2. Improve the elections: I have been spending a lot of work on the new FAmSCo election guidelines and I want to continue with this because I think there is still a lot to be improved. Even if we have the best guidelines ever, we can improve, participation , documentation and the process. My goal is to have one simple and streamlined election process for the whole Fedora project. 3. Solve conflicts about local communities: As FAmSCo chair, I received a lot of mails about conflicts in various local communities. I was asked to make a decision, but frankly speaking I cannot. I am willing to help and to act as a middlemen, but it is not on me to decide who gets a certain domain or not. Instead of solving these conflicts one by one it is better to think about how we want to deal with them. Maybe the Fedora community working group can help? I don't know, but I continue to work on it. If you like my ideas, I would appreciate your help. If you don't like them, I am looking forward to your feedback. And if you have more ideas how to make the Fedora community a better place, lets discuss them. .... too much. Catchy subject, isn't it? ;) I hope I have everybody's attention now. I just came home from biking and while I was away, two people pinged me and asked if we were supposed to have an EMEA ambassadors meeting. No, it was supposed to be last week, because of the Germany vs. Netherlands soccer match, I was not able to host it. I sent out a warning before I left and asked, if someone else would run the meeting. Unfortunately nobody did. Instead somebody suggested, to delay the meeting by a week. Too bad, he did not ask this on the mailing list, so I was not aware of this. Long story short: We basically missed two meetings. At least one should have taken place, either tonight or last week. Please, do not rely on me too much. I am trying my best, but the Fedora ambassadors don't depend on me. Everybody can run a meeting. You don't need me to do it. So next time there is a meeting and I am not around, just go ahead. Ping people in #fedora-ambassadors and start the meeting. Don't ask, don't think about it too long, just do it. I know you can! Hello dear ambassadors, because I'm a media wrangler for EMEA I think it's important to inform you that I won't be available because I'll be on holidays till July 24th. Saludos, El día de hoy se realizo la primera reunion del recientemente electo FamSco, uno de los temas a tratar fue que la autorización del gasto de presupuesto se realizara de manera escalonada dentro de presupuesto por region, que significa esto: Que un miembro de famsco o card holder, puede aprobar un presupuesto de 0 a 499 dls, de 500 a 1999 dls debe ser aprobado en una reunion regional de embajadores con un quorum de 5 embajadores de la region (punto a discutir), de 2000 a 5000 es aprobado por Famsco y de 5000+ se requiere aprobación de Famsco mas un miembro de comArch o sea el Fedora Project Lider. Esto es importante ya que region de latam puede aprobar parte de su presupuesto sin tener que ir a famsco a menos que el presupuesto sea mayor a 1999 dls. Hi, every FAmSCo member got a homework at the first meeting. And the homework was to set personal goals we want to achieve in the next months and make other ambassadors acquainted with them. So here they are: 1) I'd like to make a comprehensive material that would help ambassadors find the best ways to promote Fedora in their region. When a new ambassador starts he doesn't know what to do, how to do etc. I'd like to make a list of descriptive suggestions, activities that are worth doing and work. It won't be a "must-do" list, rather tips to improve ambassador's job. I'll start working on this when I return from holidays and I will appreciate help of experienced ambassadors. 2) I'd like to improve cooperation and flow of information between ambassadors and other groups in Fedora. In the material for ambassadors, I'd like to include a section that would list things that are currently new or important and ambassadors should propagate them in the community (test days, urgent need for help in some group etc.). 3) I'd like to improve swag&media planning and distribution globally and locally. This still doesn't work very well. We have to make sure that swag is ready at the time when release parties are. 4) My personal goal is also to find new ambassadors in European countries where we currently have no active representatives (e.g. Poland or Slovakia). [Event Report] Barcamp Mumbai 9, India, Sunday, June 17, 2012

Hi, I attended Barcamp Mumbai 9 [1] at Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) [2], Mumbai, Maharashtra, India on Sunday, June 17, 2012. After an informal introduction, four parallel tracks were scheduled. Each session was 20 minutes long, and 10 minutes between talks for people to move between the halls. Although most of the talks were non-technical, there were quite a few interesting sessions. Raj Desai presented on "The Math of Music". He explained how the rhythms or beats used in music formed a pattern, and how they often use prime numbers. For example, a 5-beat sequence is made from a combination of a 2-3 beat sequence, or, a 7-beat sequence is made from a 2-2-3 or a 3-2-2 beat sequence. He also played the different beats, giving numerous examples. Krishna Patel played the short movie "Geri's Game" [3] in his session on "How To Watch a Movie", and explained the different aspects in a movie like composition, props, sound, colour etc. He mentioned that one might have to re-watch a movie several times focusing on just one aspect at a time to observe and learn how they have been used. The session on "How to memorise a pack of 52 playing cards in under 2 minutes" by Aniceto Pereira taught how to use two simple mnemonic systems to memorise a pack of cards. For the four suites, we used the letters C (clubs), S (spades), H (hearts), D (diamonds). For each card in a suite, a consonant is assigned. For example, Ace was assigned the letter 't' or 'd', because there is one vertical line in it, referring to one. The number '2' was assigned the letter 'n' because there were two downward strokes in it. For each card that we have, we build a series of images to remember them. Anurag Patel's [4] session on "Sh*t people say to a chat bot" was hilarious! He had created http://rickfare.com to compute Mumbai's autorickshaw fare calculation, and later added support for other cities as well. There were times when people started to chat with the bot, and he shared quite a few entertaining, priceless conversations from the server logs. The talk on "Negotiating with VCs - An Entrepreneur’s Legal Guide" by Abhyudaya Agarwal was very informative, and detailed. I had presented "Quite Universal Circuit Simulator - A Qt Love Story" [5], an introduction to electrical circuit theory using Qucs [6]. Hello folks! First, please forgive me for the X-post. The email concerns more than one team and I really didn't know what mailing list to send it to. I've therefore sent it to the 3 major lists that I hope would cover most of the community. ---- We've been recently looking to reduce the learning gradient that new folks need to hike up when they look to contribute to Fedora. Users looking to give back to the community is amazing. I feel we need to go out and give them as much help as we can. The importance here is that most of them will be new to the workflows, SIGS, teams and processes that Fedora community uses. Quite a few of them will be new to Linux even. For these novices, learning all that is required to become contributors is a daunting task. However, what is important is that all of them have the *potential* to make awesome contributors! At the moment, this is how folks go about it: 1. Look at the join-fedora page[1] 2. Select what they want to do, or randomly pick one that looks most familiar 3. Join the various mailing lists 4. Ask how they can help 5. Start working, and learn while they work, get sponsored etc. Even though this works, there are a few issues here IMO: 1. Quite a few folks aren't sure what they want to do. The join fedora page is confusing for them at times. They don't know first hand what each role is about, so they aren't sure if they should join up SIG A or SIG B. This doesn't make them "folks that can't contribute (they can't even figure out what SIG to join! heh!)". It makes them "folks who need to find where they fit in, what they're good at in the Fedora community" 2. The various mailing lists: devel, mktg, infra are work oriented. While we do guide newcomers that ask for help on the lists, these newcomers are usually scared to ask questions. They feel they'll make fools of themselves if they ask simple questions in front of established contributors. Basically, the working mailing lists aren't exactly the best environment for new comers. They are task oriented. They aren't dedicated to aiding new comers. We also don't want lots of introductions etc. on the work mailing lists either. We want them to be dedicated to *work*. I therefore suggest setting up communication channels dedicated to aid newcomers. I've already run into a "Welcome SIG"[2] initiative. The "welcome SIG" was intended to be more broad. It was intended for users too. If we set up "welcome SIG", I'm afraid it'll turn into another troubleshooting channel. We already have #fedora, the users mailing list[3], askfedora[3] for troubleshooting. I'd like to set up a channel dedicated to prospective contributors: something like a "Join Fedora SIG"(proposal on the wiki here[4]). Gnome already has something on these lines: the Gnome Love[5] project. It works. I'm on the mailing list. People ask for help, they get their guidance. Slowly, they turn into contributors. I'd like to again stress that the current mailing lists, while already present and open to the public are not *dedicated* to this purpose of guiding newbies. I suggest: 1. #fedora-join on Freenode 2. fedora-join mailing list The goals of these are: 1. Set up a communication channel between the existing contributors and prospective contributors. Speaking to current team members is always encouraging. We could even set up a system to send "easyfix" tasks to this mailing list giving folks a chance to work on them and learn in the process. 2. Guide/aid prospective contributors to turn into solid contributors. Rather than just pointing them to join.fp.o, talk to them, see what issues they face, help them decide where they want to get started. 3. Via these channels, form better mentor-mentee relationships. Here, I mean "mentor" in the real sense of the word. Rahul, for instance, brought me into Fedora almost 6 years back via a font packaging IRC work shop. He's still my mentor and I still email him when I get stuck in a situation. Such relationships improve the community, both work wise and fun wise. 4. Give prospective contributors a communication channel to converse amongst themselves. This is very important. Take the GSoC mailing list for instance. It is set up specifically so that the candidates can talk to each other. Since they're all in the same boat, they feel more comfortable discussing certain issues amongst themselves. They'll also be aware of what different people are up to which will give them a better idea of what they can do. I'm looking to set up this channel. Whatever I've written above is mostly what *my* neurons could think up. I initially thought that extending the classroom SIG to also function as the Join Fedora SIG would work, but Kevin suggested we keep them separate. (The function of the classroom SIG is for the community to teach each other). Basically, I'd like to look for potential, not polish. We can help them gain the polish that established contributors have. What are your views on this folks? Here, I'd request folks to follow "plussing": please criticize this as much as you want, find issues, but only if you have a "plus" to give as a solution. (I ran into it in a book I recently read. I think it's a great way to go. No harm giving it a try :-) ) Steps: 1. File ticket at infra to set up fedora-join mailing list 2. Set up IRC channel #fedora-join 3. Beefy Miracle Release Party in Malang Report

Hello Ambassadors, This is probably the first time in Malang there are Fedora Release Party Event, Fedora users in Malang are not as many as other distro users, so it was natural that not many events held by us. Sunday (10/6) at the Information Technology Laboratory, 5th Floor Gedung Kuliah Bersama (GKB) 3 at University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), Fedora 17 "Beefy Miracle" Release Party was finally held. The event itself started a bit late, delayed about 50 minutes away from the original plan. Promptly at 9:50 AM the event started. That's not the committee fault anyway, because at 9 AM the committee is already prepared, only the participants who came rather late. How lucky, friends in KaliUMM (Linux Users Group in UMM) can simply improvise, to fill the silence they play several short films/video clips about Linux and open source. When the participants had arrived, the chairman of KaliUMM, Yudhi directly open the event. The first opportunity given to Zen Rooney, chairman of KOLAM, who stepped forward and introduced KOLAM (Linux Users Group in Malang). After that, it was my turn to bring material on Fedora, I regrouped into three topics: Fedora Project, Fedora 17 Features and Common Installation Tips. On the first topic, Fedora Project, I invited the participants to know more about the Fedora community, not just known fedora as a linux distribution (distro). How this community that supported by Red Hat has contributed greatly to the development of Linux in particular and the world of Open Source in general. I also explained about fedora's core value: freedom, friends, features, first. I emphasize how important collaboration and how the fedora developers are always trying to work as close as possible to the upstream project. That is not important for fedora to have unique application, rather than became exclusive application in a single distro, an application will be much more useful if it is available in many distro (can be used by many people) instead. I was slightly introduced on the terms "Remix" and "Spins" and what purpose and give them some examples. I did not forget to invite the participants to join the fedora project and I was informed about the Fedora Indonesia Community[1]. Because not many participants that are fedora users, when I talk on the topic of "Fedora 17 Features" I did not linger to discuss what's new in Fedora 17 but I would rather talk more about the other powerful features that have long existed in the fedora. Presto, SystemD, SELinux, PackageKit, Kickstart is a few of the many features that I think is interesting. And here, I was mention again how unselfish fedora developers is, they want to communicate and collaborate with developers of other distributions to developing PackageKit. And how fedora to be a pioneer distro that adopt SELinux, a kernel security feature developed by the NSA (National Security Agency). While in the last topic of "Common Installation Tips", I explain what steps should be done after we install fedora. I was again reminded why fedora by default do not support the mp3 format and do not include proprietary software like nvidia drivers, dropbox, skype, etc.. Indeed, we as end users feeling a bit "uncomfortable" because we should install many application from 3rd party repository. For simplicity, I suggest to install fedorautils, autoplus and gnome tweak tools. You can download my presentation slide from SlideShare[2] or Scribd[3] if you interested. Aris Setyono from KaliUMM start to demonstrating the internet radio using Icecast 2. Yudhi in the introduction was informed that this is one of the research activities that have been done by KaliUMM. These steps are demonstrated very easy to follow. Hopefully there are participants who are interested to participate in this internet radio implemented in their respective places. Last turn, Rachmad Tsalaatsa guide the Webserver Load Balancing workshop. The workshop begins with an explanation of what it is load balancing, the types, how it works, the algorithms used, etc.. Continued by the participants directly involved attempting to install and configure load balancing on each desktop that has been provided by the committee. This event was closed by party, taking picture, eating hotdog and drinking accompanied by the strains of house music. After watching soccer with my friends I am either too euphoric or too disappointed - and too drunk either way - to run the FAmSCO meeting. ;) But this is not so much of a problem as there are no urgent tickets and we first need to find a new meeting time after the recent FAmSCo elections. Hello FAms! FAmSCo May report is now available on the wiki. Check it out: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FAmSCo_report_2012-05 I recommend the next FAmSCo members to look into the reporting process in order to make it better. The biggest difficulty of making such reports right now is finding updated data on information sources. This term we simplified a lot how those reports are made. They are now more straightforward and easier to compose but the process still needs to be improved. Another ways of reporting FAmSCo activity would be a nice improvement as well. I'm pretty sure the new FAmSCo members will keep improving the reports of the committee activity continuously improving the transparency. All the best to the new FAmSCo! Wrapping up some SELF details and FAD @ SELF? Anyone?

Greetings, ambassadors coming to SELF: Three things: First: For the love of all things beefy, please, put your name on the SELF wiki page if you have not done so already: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SELF_2012 There are multiple sections - for "if you're planning to booth," giving a presentation, if you want to share when you arrive/depart, etc. This is very helpful information to have. Second: If you are unsure of your ride details from airports or etc., please start sorting them out now. Third: We have a room available to us on Sunday at SELF in which I was thinking it might be nice to Get Something Done, but I wanted to feel out who was interested in participating, etc before finalizing anything. This is basically a "we can get a few things done in a couple hours with who we have on hand" type fad, not a "haul everyone in" kind of fad :) Some thoughts: * Marketing FAD (Assess current state of marketing collateral, plan for F18 and beyond) * Finance FAD (Take a look at finance approval processes and perhaps come up with something new; talk about current state of budget, etc) * Plan FAMNA FAD, FAD (Make a plan for what we might want to accomplish at a North American Ambassador FAD) * ?????????? [Event Report] Release Party F17 Surakarta, 2 Juni 2012

Hi, Release party Fedora 17 Surakarta[1] successfully implemented. There are several parties who participated to help the course of events. FICOS[2], helped organize the event, administering licensing place and fill the opening session. Semartv[3], helps in order event could viewed in live streaming. Streaming went well although there are constraints about the sound. KPLI SOLO[4], help smooth the whole event. Participants who register actually almost 50 people, but for some reason that came about 20 people. Participants consisted of students UNS, SINUS, UGM and doscom. [Event Report] Fedora Activity Day, June 2, 2012 @ Red Hat, Pune

Hi, A Fedora Activity Day [1] (FAD) was organized on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at the Red Hat office premises in Pune, India. This was an activity based event, where there were no talks. The various topics suggested during the FAD included development, packaging, and documentation work. The newbies worked on GNU Hello RPM packaging [2], while others worked on pushing updates to existing packages, and packaging new software. I had submitted a new Csmith [3] package release for review, and packaged and submitted sized-types [4], and netlist-to-vhdl [5] Haskell packages for review. Lakshmi Narasimhan completed the package review for sized-types. I had requested Fedora Infrastructure to make Agilo for Trac [6] (Apache license) available. It was made available for testing during the FAD, and I tested the same with the Fedora Electronic Lab [7] trac instance. All the Agilo plugins are now enabled in the trac for use. We also had an F17 release party during the event, where Rahul Sundaram cut a beautiful, tasty, F17 cake. Thanks to Red Hat for hosting the event, sponsoring the lunch, and providing the facilities for the FAD. FAmNA Meeting Announcement (05 June 2012)

Please join us for our weekly FAmNA meeting this Tuesday at 9:00pm Eastern in #fedora-meeting on irc.freenode.net. I'd like to remind everyone that it is important for us to get some work accomplished at these meetings and staying on the topic is important to that end. All comments are welcome from ambassadors during the meetings but please wait until the Open Floor to add any subject matter not included in the meeting agenda via a ticket. Feel free to add to the agenda. The easy way to add an agenda item is described at the bottom of this announcement. Especially if you have an event coming up that needs some attention. This week we will focus on cleaning up any outstanding issues for SELF. That is urgent as SELF will begin is just a few more days. We also want to deal with any Red Hat Summit planning that we can take care of before that event creeps up on us. Beefy Miracles at SELF

Okay, just to bring some folks up to date on the Hot Dog situation at SELF: (And please note: Ruth Suehle is copied on here, as she's been helping to wrangle a lot of this, and she's applying to ambassadors - so she's not on this list quite yet, hence the copying) * We have procured a vendor for vendorizing beefy miracles at SELF via a hot dog cart, at the park directly across the street. They're coming at 12:30 on saturday, during lunch, and they'll be serving up to 280 hot dog "meals" (soda/chips/dogs). * Ruth has created a flyer that we can either (a) give out at the booth, but i suspect we'll have low traffic prior to lunch, or that we can have put into bags at the conference. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/File:Beefy-flyer-single.pdf Thoughts/comments welcome - we probably need to order them in the day or so. I know there was some discussion on "how to decide who gets it" - the text in the card could be determined by that - honestly, I suspect that with 280 lunches we probably won't run out, not everyone will want to stand in line, etc. - but we probably want to have people show badges so that we're not just giving out food to whoever is in teh vicinity of the park. But, happy to hear alternative ideas; again, I'm just not sure that we'd get enough tickets out to people by mid-day on saturday, when folks tend to be in conference-mode all morning. * A human-sized stand-up Beefy Miracle will be available for photos and such, he has been ordered and will be shipped either to Ruth in raleigh or directly to the conference.
