[Event Report] GNUnify 2013, SICSR, Pune, India, February 15-17, 2013
by Shakthi Kannan
Hi,
GNUnify 2013 [1] was held at Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies
and Research (SICSR) [2], Pune, Maharashtra, India between February 15
to 17, 2013. I attended day one of the unconference.
The first talk that I listened to was by Oyunbileg Baatar on
"Screencasting Demos and HowTos". He mentioned the various free/open
source, desktop recording software available. He also gave a demo of
recordMyDesktop [3], and video editing using PiTiVi [4].
After a short break, and a formal introduction, I began my session for
the day - "Introduction to GCC" [5]. Fedora 17 was installed in the
labs for the participants to use. I started with a simple hello world
example and the use of header files. I also explained the concepts of
compilation and linking, and briefed them on the syntax of Makefiles.
Examples on creating and using static and shared libraries were
illustrated. We also discussed the different warning and error
messages emitted by GCC. The platform-specific and optimization
options were shown with examples. Students were not familiar with
touch typing, and I had to demonstrate the use of Klavaro [6] typing
tutor.
The preliminary round for the programming contest was held in the
afternoon. Thirty questions on C and systems programming were given to
the participants to be answered in thirty minutes. I helped evaluate
the answers. The practical test was to be conducted the following day.
Thanks to Neependra Khare [7] and Kiran Divarkar for organizing the
programming contest.
I also attended the OpenStack mini-conf session in the evening where a
demo of OpenStack was given by Kiran Murari. This was followed by a
session on "OpenStack High Availability" by Syed Armani. Aditya
Godbole's closing session for the day on an "Introduction to Ruby" was
informative. Few photos that were taken are available in my /gallery
[8].
Regards,
SK

Fedora Videos : Need Help
by nitesh narayan lal
Hi,
I was preparing a document which is having the list of all videos websites
and videos in the form of following structure
----------Videos Website
-----------Channels Related To Fedora
-----------Videos Which can used under the name of Fedora and
doesn't have any issues
-----------Videos related to Fedora but still need a green signal
from Fedora-legal team to avoid any future issues
I had started preparing this documentation with youtube .
But it might be hard for me alone to cover everything so I was looking for
some helping hands .
In case you want to help please feel free to contact me via mail or on IRC
.
The aim of doing all this is to keep things sorted out for Fedora Videos at
the time of merging and placing all videos at one place .

SCALE 11x is next weekend - are we ready?
by Robyn Bergeron
Hi folks,
We were discussing SCALE planning in the FAmNA meeting on Tuesday
night - it's not entirely clear what things are in progress and what
is not at this point.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SCALE_11X_Event
* We have a bunch of people signed up to volunteer for a FAD, but I'm
not seeing anything planned for a FAD, or any record of us having a
FAD on the scale site where they list other co-located special events.
* The budget appears to have been approved -
https://fedorahosted.org/famna/ticket/51 - do we know who is rooming
with who, etc. so we can figure out payment while there?
* Booth stuff. We recalled that Dan408 has the event box and banners
(and I recall that one of them is bent/broken, unless that's been
rectified) currently, but nobody knows if / how / when it's being
shipped to LA; Markdude isn't coming to scale after all (as he told us
during the meeting), I'm not sure if any of the other Bay Area folks
signed up are driving down and have planned to bring the event box.
Also: If swag needs to be brought along because the event box is
empty, that would be good to know. Dan: Do you know anything, or have
plans with someone?
* NB: Do you know anything about the media situation, ie: if there's
any way we can get a portion of it to SCALE? Or is it still mostly in
production?
See you guys soon,
-Robyn
