Let's equip our Communities in EMEA

Hello everyone, during the last EMEA irc meeting, I proposed that we should make sure all active communities within our region are equipped with basic booth equipment such as roll-up banners and tableclothes. Currently, there is just one or two tableclothes for the whole region. Not every community has its own roll-up banners and while some do, these are not anymore in a proper working condition (e.g. colors have started fading out, stands are showing signs of heavy use). Spending budget on such an initiative can be considered a good investment, since the equipment produced will last for years and will enable our communities to look overall more professional when representing the project during events and conferences. We still have a significant amount of the current fiscal year's budget unspent and we can definitely use some of it. Does your community lack some booth equipment? Fedora 24 Beta status is NO-GO

The decision of the Fedora 24 Beta Go/No-Go Meeting is NO-GO. Due to an invalid F24 Beta RC compose [1] has been agreed on the Go/No-Go meeting to slip the Beta release for one week as well as to slip the Final GA of Fedora 24. The next Go/No-Go meeting is planned on the next Thursday 2016-May-05 at 5:30PM UTC. More information can be found in the meeting minutes [2][3]. According to the description: "The Storytelling Delegate will be accountable for Regional Reports. They don't necessarily have to write all the original content, they just need to be accountable for ensuring content makes it out onto our channels." EMEA: Looking for a new chair (IRC meetings)

Hello EMEA ambassadors, for the last months I have been leading our bi-weekly meetings held on IRC. During these months I have tried to make these meetings even more accessible to everyone, especially to new contributors. At the same time, we have actually seen an increase in the average number of participants per meeting. I think it's time for me to step down and allow others to take on leadership roles as well. It has events all across the world, but I will be attending as an Ambassador over the weekend at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Western New York. Talking points about open-source software

Hello fellow ambassadors! :) As discussed in our EMEA meeting, I will be invited (most likely) to a Microsoft conference here in Belgrade, Serbia (1000+ developers are expected) to hold a presentation about .NET developer toolchain on Linux. It will be a great opportunity to promote Fedora and FOSS. The Fedora part I got covered, and I know what I will talk about. Mostly about how Fedora plays nice with many developer tools, how developer friendly in general it is and how it's fantastic with the frequency of tools updates. Also how nicely it integrates into some of the already existing Microsoft Services (like Azure) However the second part about open source software - I'm stumped. Does anyone here have any talking points or prior presentations experience on trying to "sell" the idea of FOSS to someone who is only making proprietary software? It's a pretty hard topic and I would love to hear some of people with greater experience in promoting the FOSS way of thinking than myself. I just have no idea on where to even start. I thought about talking about some great open source libraries for .NET developers and that would be fine since I am using many of them and have only had great experiences with them, but than comes the issue of licensing and selling open source software as a part of a closed software solution. Most of the mentioned libraries are GPL licensed if I remember correctly so you see what is the issue. So in short, how would you present greatness that is the FOSS philosophy to developers who make a living on selling custom-made business/enterprise software. Any insights, tips or materials would be greatly appreciated. The conference is about a month away, and I think this is an interesting subject even if I don't get to present it. :) Thanks in advance to everyone. Cheers! Nemanja

BrickHack 2016 Event Report

Hello all, Earlier last week, my full event report on the BrickHack 2016 event in Rochester, New York was published. In the report, I covered what happened for Fedora, the impact we had with attendees, what worked well for us at this event, and plenty of pictures to go along with it. https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org/brickhack-2016-event-report/ One thing that I thought was really interesting... of the 363 attendees at BrickHack, 23 attendees (or 6.3% of attendees) claimed the BrickHack 2016 badge. This might sound small, but if you look at FOSDEM 2016, 77 out of roughly 5000 attendees claimed that badge (which equates to about 1.5% of all attendees). EuroPython 2016

Hello everyone, it has been brought to my attention on the last night EMEA Ambassadors meeting that there is an opening for attending the EuroPython 2016 conference in Bilbao, Spain which takes place from July 17 to July 24. Users sesivany and giannisk mentioned this. I'm very interested in going, and have been suggested to write about it here on the mailing list. I'm from Novi Sad, which is in Serbia so there are no Visa issues here for traveling to Spain. I'm also a student so I would get the student discount for the EuroPython ticket itself (EUR120 instead of EUR360). As far as my Python expereince goes, I've been learning Python for the last couple of months mainly through the excellent courses on PluralSight (on a side note, I really recommend this if you can get your hands on the PluralSight subscription through your college), mainly the ones by A. Bingham and R. Smallshire as well as the courses on Flask and Django by Reindert-Jan Ekker. I've been focusing mostly on the Flask framework for now, because I like it the most. Since starting to learn Python by myself it quickly went from being just a fun language to play with to my language of choice for some of my projects opposed to C# and Java which are mostly used in my area and in which I'm more expereinced. I love Python and I would love to learn more about it. On my university there are no Python courses available, and the Python community here is minimal, sadly. I've checked the cost of the plane ticket which is about EUR360 for the return ticket, and also accomodation will be arround EUR300. I can probably find cheaper accomodation just haven't had much time to look for it, but will do if there is a chance of me going. Please note that this is, to me, a lot of money, and it is would be also OK that I pay for some part of my expenses. Anyways to keep this short, if there is an opening or a chance for me to go to the conference, I would love to go. If I recall correctly, Fedora is sharing a booth there with Red Hat and I am open to volunteer as much as I can there and help as much as possible. If there is indeed a chance to go to EuroPython, I will open a ticked on the EMEA tracker with a more detailed expenses summary, just wanted to ask here first. Thanks everyone! Cheers, Nemanja

Golden chance to translate Fedora 24 in your language

Out of the six billion people in the world, only 339 million have English as a first language. The importance of English in global business increases the number of English speakers, but the people learning are taking English on as a second language. A notable number of users prefer products in their own language. In the Fedora Globalization (G11n) group, we are making this happen. The efforts are huge, and kudos to all our contributors.If you are a non-English user in Fedora and want to help improve translations in your native language, this is your time to contribute! A virtual Fedora translation sprint is coming up soon for Fedora 24 GUI applications. Although it is a virtual event, if there are more contributors at a single location, they can gather together at an available place and work together.If any Ambassadors have this plan, please contact the G11n list with your requirements. The translation sprint is happening according to the Fedora 24 schedule. There is a good chance to get your own contributions into Fedora 24! So what are you waiting for?
