I saw the first email about this event on August 13 and responded on
August 16.  What can we do to improve communication so we can figure out
if these kinds of collaborations can be leveraged next year?

The problem with this particular event is that it seems no one knew this event was going to happen (for Fedora involvement) until that time. By that I mean that this event doesn't seem to have a standard location (It was in Canada last year and Seattle the year before and it seems like next year isn't announced yet) and we were asked to be involved last minute. We didn't even know if anyone would be available until a few weeks ago. Due to the volunteer nature of our group, between juggling IRL (full time work, families, ect), and not including the extra funding that would have been required to obtain through FAmSCO (to cover travel for others to come) on such a short notice (if I understand our new policies right...) I think we should call this a win for getting there, with bonus points for practically no cost.

All that being said, now is a good time to talk about SCaLE for March '18.

Are there any specific areas of improvement you will be focusing on?  I
think it'd be great to talk up our work in Modularity/Boltron.  I think
our CI objective, while still being fleshed out would make a good
talking point for drawing in new contribution.

That's a good thought given a lot of the breakout topics, and I saw the recent talk on devel list about the delays. Some people, if they aren't aware of the growing pain points, are scared off when things aren't as polished as expected and that can be a potential stumbling block for new community members. But that's just one of the tradeoffs of "First".
