About registering domains

Hello all, first of all sorry for my bad english. Secondly, sorry if this
post is unappropriate in this list.

The story goes like this:
I want to register and reserve fedoraproject.or.id for fedora community in
Indonesia to use, but at the time of the registration, it appears that I
need a confirmation letter from maybe our Project Leader or someone else in
charge or authorized (the term is "Internal Mandate Letter" or something
like that, it's in Indonesian). They gave me about 5 to 7 days to resolve
the problem and get the confirmation letter.
So, who should I talk to? Is there anyone that have similar problem?

Hello,

I'm planning to build an online community of fedora users in Indonesia. that
simple :)
I've been an ambassador about 3 years or so, but my sin to confess is I've
done so little to promote fedora in even my own city. All I have done is
take part in FreeMedia program, delivering some free dvds around.
So this is my first (or second) move, forming a community of fedora users,
where users can interact and help each other. This is a big task for me
since I've so many offline duties in other parts of my life, but if I don't
do or die trying to do it now, maybe it would be too late for me later :P
I've already own a group in google called id-fedora, but it's still empty,
would you join in Adarsh?

Hi John,

If I understand correctly, the domain would be fedoraproject.org.id,
right? I'm from Brazil, and here, to register a domain with .br locale
weed needed a company (not anymore, they just changed this, any person
can do it now). If this list is not the right place (I don't know,
just like you), I think the mkt should be, but I believe almost
everyone there receive your message as well.

If you want to build a site to your people I recomend some kind of cms
to do it very quickly and with some cool features. I can give some
tips if you get the domain and some help. Here we have at least 3
sites like the kind I think you want to make.

Hi Teseu, thanks for the reply.
Yes, I'm registering fedoraproject.or.id (not org, .id only use 2 letters
for organization). The registration is already submitted but there's a
problem concerning the requirements to register the domain, that is beside a
copy of my ID-Card, they also need a "Mandate Letter" or something like
that. According to the officer that e-mailed me, a formal letter/e-mail
(with fedora logo in it) from the project leader or someone in charge will
do it. Before, registering .or.id only need a ID-Card copy of the admin, but
now they need some organization 'stamp' on it :)

For the cms, I'm considering drupal or joomla, but still open for more
alternatives. What's your site? and thank you for your tips and help offer.
Will contact you as soon as our site is on the go :)

I'm member of projetofedora.org, the official site from Fedora in
Brazil, we use drupal, member also in fedora.org.br (Fedora Comunity),
there is PHP-Nuke (I don't know very much about it) and I'm a manager
in linux-fedora.org with LonelySpooky, also an Ambassador. In this one
we use xoops, I'm more familiar with xoops.

Send me an email when you have the domain, we can discuss the options.

Can you build this community using the existing Fedora
Infrastructure-provided tools (wiki, mailing lists, ...)?  If not, why
not?

While I absolutely encorage local and regional groups, the first step
should not be to register a domain and set up your own
infrastructure.  I'd like to see Ambassadors contribute to the Fedora
Infrastructure group, working on adding enhancements and features that
will directly benefit both your local groups, and the Project as a
whole.

Imagine if fedorahosted.org, or the asterisk, or the wiki, or the
download services, all were replicated (differently) by many teams
around the world.  A huge amount of effort and duplication, at what
cost (even if borne by the Ambassadors themselves), but with limited
geographical (thus contributor) reach.  Lots of work, little gain.

So please, consider using existing Fedora Infrastructure resources to
further the goals and outreach of your local teams.  If this proves
impossible, please advise the Infrastructure team on the services need
that aren't present, and then help get them created and maintained in
the Infrastructure team.
