Yes! You read the subject line correctly! We are much closer now to being able to have an online store stocked with Fedora goods. I just need some input on what we stock it with, as we'll be responsible for things that don't sell. We're only able to stock 4-6 items to start with. A few questions:
- What types of items are you most interested in having in the store? Think about price points, shipping weight, etc. Here's the Red Hat store if you need some inspiration: https://redhat.corpmerchandise.com
- Is it worth "using up" one of the items we can stock for small things like pens or stickers that are frequently acquired at conferences, or do you think there are a lot of people who never make it to conferences who would want to buy those things online?
- I assume at least one item will be a t-shirt. Do you want a simple shirt with the Fedora logo on it, more of a shirt design we already have, or do you want us to go to the design team and have them work on something specifically for this purpose?
Thanks! Ruth
Hello All
Wow, that's fab news, I can see these being of interest, the obvious ones I think
T-shirts Stickers Mouse Mats Mugs Pens/Pencils Laptop Rucksack [ I did want a RedHat one of these, but I can't see it now on the Cool Stuff Store] etc etc

I would really like to see a nice laptop backpack. Something along the lines of OGIO quality or better. The Red Hat Brandfuel / "Cool Stuff" store used to sell a really high quality backpack.
I would probably not use up one of the slots for stickers and pens if we only have a limited number to work with at first. Moreover, something along the lines of a "Welcome Kit" that includes some pens, stickers, buttons, thumb drive, etc could be bundled together and only consume one slot.
I do like the idea of a nice T-shirt in one of the slots.
Hope that helps!

Hi All,
I think we could do with these too:
-CD case/bag -T-shirt -Lapel pins -Brooches
And the Lynn's idea of a "Welcome Pack" is absolutely laudable.

I would be interested in the Fedora 19 release shirt and I also got positive feedback from others who would like to have a Fedora anniversary shirt. But since there are dedicated shirt shops that print shirts on-demand, it might be better to use one of these to sell t-shirts. Shipping USB live media (preferable on a USB3 device) might be a good addition to the free media program, if the shop targets international customers. Another idea would be YubiKeys, if it is possible to distribute them cheaper this way, to make it more interesting for Fedora contributors to use them. This might also be something that would be worth selling on conferences, if this is legally possible.
Another idea I just had, would be a Fedora mascot, not sure if this is pursuit by someone, but at least looking at Fedora badges, a blue panda bear might be a candidate.

A shirt with just the logo might be problematic, as it might be recognised as a Facebook shirt (I learned this from a designer at Flock).

I would personally love to see/purchase a Fedora hoodie and a fleece jacket (with the fedora logo embroidered). And a high quality fedora-branded laptop backpack would be a nice thing, too.

I think it would be an amazing possibility to get support from other companies - I mean giving a chance to others to sell through our store that we can buy - eg RSpi or other dev boards, hackable stuffs with prepared Fedora images on it. That can boost ARM and other team developments too. Of course any wearable stuff is a +1. So, allowing other open source companies to sell through our store can be a win-win for everyone - and with proper merchandising I think we can boost other open source development, and ours too.
Thank you,
Zoltan

(T-)shrts, mugs etc. and on smartphone covers!
At least the most used models such as samsung...
Then sunglasses, usb-sticks and whatever some can get from the "chinastore" ;-)

Oooh. Does that mean that high cost items (fancy backpacks, say) are more of a risk? What's the quantity-per-time for "doesn't sell"?

I think *normal* stickers are out, but people seem to _love_ the shiny metal ones (like case stickers). If those are an option I'd be in favor.
I like pens. And pencils. But I'm not sure of their value for the store.
Clothing is good. In addition to the assumed t-shirt, I'd like to see a hoodie or light jacket. Ideally of higher quality -- embroidered Fedora logo instead of printed? -- with the t-shirt being the lower-cost apparel option.
This might be my personal bias, but I'd love to see some kids' sizes too -- maybe even something designed for kids?
Mugs are good.
I like the idea of lanyards, too -- it's a way to show your Fedora identity at non-Fedora conferences.
Possibly some sort of keychain gadget? Although I personally will not be changing my Lego minifig keychains for anything.

Because we have such an awesome design team, I'd like to see custom, limited-edition designs. Maybe we could do two, and then replace whichever is selling more slowly?

Sure, we can try to do for each version one, its not a problem. We did for last 2 releases shirts, as Till mentioned before and it looks they are loved a lot. They was given away to good contributors, before you moan I was not responsible for the selection who got one. Nor was Jiri Eischmann and Gabriele Trombini, who did the work collecting the names from team leads and FAmSCo, FESCo and send them out.
But I fear they are loved a lot because not everybody has one, so we should measure here what has more value for us, award them furthermore to good contributors or the dollar signs in the eyes of donald duck ;) I hope we can do a shirt for F21 to, I already work it and waive it again to good contributors. So start to think about doing a release party, that was always the easiest way to get one.

I just thought of something that would be cool if we can do it, but may not be possible depending on the vendor. Can we include a piece of paper with each order with a QR code which takes you to a badge for "I shopped at the Fedora Store!"?
(Or, less optimistically, get something linked to the actual web store. But I don't expect that'll be possible.)
I think this time also would be nice option to buy through the shop the ambassadors starter kit :)
With this option our new ambassadors would be able to run events, and would be a nice touch for the community.
IMHO,

As I understand it, the individual items will be priced... individually. That means it's well-suited for a single person who wants to get some Fedora-branded stuff, but that we'll still do our bulk swag for events in bulk. Ruth, tell me if I'm off-base here.
(Or if there's some point where the overhead of smallish swag orders is enough that using the store for this would actually make sense.)

I'm hedging on this only because I don't know what the item prices will be. They're working up that deck for me now. If it's comparably cheap, then they can drop ship directly to events and make my life SO NICE. But if it's not, then obviously we'll keep bulk ordering.
Here is a list of swag items that came to mind:
T-shirts (his & hers) Hoodies Stickers (multi packs) Case badges Ink pens Pins & iron-on badges. Hats (baseball, army style, beanie, etc) Stress balls Tea cups & coffee mugs
I ordered a mug of Fedora with a local company, custom nade of course, anda costa me like 6 dollars.
Also ordered a polo t-shirt at other company anda cost me like 20 dollars.
When they'll delivered to me, if u want I'll show you some pics.
I would like to buy an oficcial one at Fedora store.

I just thought of something that would be cool if we can do it, but may not be possible depending on the vendor. Can we include a piece of paper with each order with a QR code which takes you to a badge for "I shopped at the Fedora Store!"?
I'm not sure, but I'll ask when I talk to her again. If not, I guess there could be a more manual process where you forward someone your receipt in exchange for the link? Or simply the honor system.
As to the rest of the input, thanks for your ideas! Again, right now we can start with 4-6 items. Some of you are aiming a little loftier. :-) I'll probably put a poll some time next week for a bit more scientific survey of what people are interested in purchasing.
Ruth
Is this store official or something like that?

I just hope that I don't have to enjoy the EU tax if I have to order every time from US. At least would be nice to have at least a single storage perhaps in Brno that Jiri can handle towards to the EU communities. Btw - with this option I think we can make really easy calculations according to necessary swag if the community votes that yeah we would like to order our fedora stuff from the store. Also in my dreams, and my head there is a thin chance, but how cool would be to have "humble bundle indie payment slide" or "I would like to toss coins to the fedora project" within the site, and if pay x dollar more for charity or for the fedora project events/swag/hw donation/$whatnot. With this, we can ease the pain when we have to support people to attend, or when we put together the Flock. I know legal issues around, but just this fallen into my mind.
IMHO, am I right? Or just wrong?

If you go back and read my original email, at this time, this is simply a swag store with several Fedora-branded items you will be able to purchase. I do not know at this time what the shipping situation outside of the US will be. If it is not simple and inexpensive, then we can start exploring options for outside of the US. One step at a time. :-)
Things like buying the Humble Bundle (I'm not even sure how this is relevant?) are definitely out of scope, and the Fedora Project does not accept donations.
Sure, one step at a time. Okay, I understand the Indie slide and charity concept is wrong for the Project, but would be possible to say to the peope that if you would like to support us - buy something from the store? With that - who purchase, gets the ordered stuff, and we can gain some money for eg. covering/reducing server/shop costs and any other infra costs? Maybe added 10 extra cent after every swag possible to make wonders?

One of the challenges in having a store is that the Fedora Project cannot accept money. Everything will be offered at cost, which is also a win for the people buying it. We will be piggybacking on Red Hat's Cool Stuff Store, so the infrastructure costs of that are already covered.
Hmmm.
This sound something you haven't thought when starting this!
In Europe, you just cannot start doing this without the permission (operating in Europe =having a store here).
Whatever it is -charity (especially) or profit making store. You will need a "VAT" number and that requires some actions by European country to be able to operate!
Also I refer the earlier post of Zoltan: "I just hope that I don't have to enjoy the EU tax if I have to order every time from US."
It is something we must understand, that everything coming outside European Union are under inspection of import tax!

Hi, from what I've read Ruth has found out a way to use the current US cool stuff store of Red Hat to sell Fedora branded stuff. I don't think there has ever been a "let's build a great online store solution which can sell and ship Fedora branded stuff to anyone in the world easily" plan, so I wouldn't blame Ruth for not thinking it through. I suppose the plan is to start in the US and if it works and if there are possible solutions in other parts of the world we can expand it eventually. BTW Red Hat has a cool stuff store in Europe, too: https://redhat.verticasshop.de/ It might be one of the options.

OK, I did not know about the store in Germany. That might be the place if:
1) it would be multilingual, not just German (at least these are required in Europe to be successful:
English, Spanish, French, Italian...
..and it would be an advantage to have:
Dutch, Portugese, Greek, Swedish (Norwegian/Danish), Finnish, Estonian, Polish....)
2) it allow people to see the products before registering in!!!!
Sorry, but for me it will never ever succeed if it requires an user account before you even see the products available!

Sure, the store is not currently designed for general public, but they have a legal entity in the EU, infrastructure for producing and selling swag and they ship all over Europe. That's something we can build on.

All of this is why we're going with a vendor rather than trying to set up something ourselves. We *aren't* going to get into the business of selling goods in any region. If it is really successful in a smaller market, we can see what we can do to make it international — which, of course, we all *want*.

Hi, I'm going to change a job soon and I don't think I will have so much time for such activities in the new one and we'll be lucky if I can keep the level of my support for the EMEA community on the same level as it is now. So please don't count on me while planning any extra activities. I'm OK with producing swag in bulk since I have reliable suppliers and I've already offered that to Ruth, but I certainly can't run a shop with swag.
