Linux commands will overall work the same. For example, « su » works
absolutely fine in Ubuntu.

However, if what you want is to become root on Ubuntu, then you'll
have to use « sudo » as that's what the Ubuntu devs chose.

Anyway, this list is definitely not the good place to ask such
questions. For more informations about the Ubuntu way of doing things,
I suggest you ask them, in their users forums. The same applies for
Fedora: this is not a mailing list for asking technical help.

i usually mention this to new people -> "technically, they are similar
.. what available in ubuntu can be available in fedora and vice versa

My answer is something like:

There are many discussion boards for different Linux distributions so
you should see the one related to the distro what you are using.. They
are specialized in one distro only but many of them also offers a topic
area for differences about distros.

If you do not know what distro to choose, there are many common Linux
discussion boards as well. By placing questions like "what is the
difference of this versus that" one should use these forums.

As I am Finnish, there are in example forums in Finnish:

My typical answer when someone asks me what are the advantages of the
Fedora distribution versus the Ubuntu distribution is that Fedora is
blue, and blue is pretty :)

People feel sufficiently surprised and intrigued so that I can then
explain to them the differences in the objectives of the projects that
are behind the distribution. Focusing on our objectives (innovation,
FOSS only, always upstream) and trying not to diminish the merits of
Ubuntu (or any other distribution, depending on who asks the
question).

I answer almost exactly as you do.  I say something such as:

  "95% or more of the code is the same, although each distro chooses
  how close to 'absolute new' their code is.  For example, in Fedora
  you might get a number of pieces of software that are newer than
  those in another distro, and for other pieces they may be older or
  different choices for default than other distros.  A lot of the
  visual difference you see is just how the desktop is polished.

  The technical differences are mostly visible to systems
  administrators and mainly haved to do with package management and
  configuration files.  All of these differences arise from community
  values.  If a distro has a value of, 'Be the best desktop possible
  that Just Works,' then you are going to make technical, marketing,
  and community choices that support that value.  If your values are,
  'Draw together the best of current 100% free software for our
  community of participants to use to improve the state of the world,'
  then you are going to make different choices.

  I recommend you study the values of the Linux distributions, try out
  their live versions, and pick the one that resonates the most with

for a moment i thought i'm reading my own post... this final paragraph
is exactly like what I always tell people :D ..

try as many distros as you can .. look up their values, goals, etc ..
get involved with their community .. and pick what matches you best ..

hi,

There are a lot of linux distributions (OSs with different flavours
built upon the linux kernel). Fedora and Ubuntu are just two of them.

This is not completely true... Red Hat Linux is gone (The 	successor is 
Red Hat Enterprise Linux and this is now the downstream of Fedora), 
while Debian is still under active development and Ubuntu is the 
downstream more or less.

(new and old) to refer to would be great. (or do we already have one?)

First of all, could you please write some context when sending such a

Secondly, how is this video related to promoting Fedora ?

Yes, I think there was a mistaken assumption made about the content of
the video.

But when one posts a link to something here giving us some context is
a good thing. What is the video about? Why should we care? Telling us
why you think it is important for us to watch and what you think
Fedora should be doing in Sri Lanka that we aren't would be a good way
to get a discussion started.

hmm well , im a sri lankan ambassador, as we citizens understand in srilanka
this is just another political business , its not mainly about contributing
IT in sl , its about selling microsoft products because.about 2 years ago we
could just go to a cd shop and buy a microsoft or any other software fr just
100bucks (1$) . so the microsoft had no use from contributing thre os here
in sl, but now thre is a new rule about pirate softwares, so most of the
poor peaple are trying to avoid buying ms and moving towards
linux(ubuntu,fedora,mandriva and open suse) , thats why the govenment office
of IT ( icta) is trying to contribute Microsoft so the officers inside the
government gets the commission. its just about the money

IMO we should focus on Fedora and not on competitors, no matter if they
are called Microsoft, Canonical or whatever. We are not fighting them,
we fight for features, progress and technical excellence. 

So I suggest: Let's use the ambassadors mailing list to focus on our
goals and our strengths instead of wasting time with watching others.

This mailing list is not the best place for that sort of discussion.
Some ambassadors here occasionally ask how to respond to questions
about so called 'competition'. When it's clearly marked as a
conversation about something that's not entirely Fedora, it's quite
understandable.  The problem here is that a single link with no
context, no information about the link, and no metadata about the
conversation is not what we want on this list.  For the record, a link
about Fedora and/or a competitor that's meant to be informative like
that, with information includde of course, probably belongs on the
marketing list instead.  I get a number of nice and sometimes not so
nice links there. This mailing list is really about how we can
advocate Fedora instead.  Please structure conversations like that
accordingly :).

one 'cos it helps him)

I think it's necessary to point two things:

1) We are Fedora, a community focused on people and not in
competition. We aren't a company and we haven't interest in thinking
at what microsoft or any other company is doing, simply because we are
doing a completely different thing :)

2) Just a tip: for such things (discussion on marketing etc) we have
Fedora Marketing Project. There are a lot of ambassadors involved and
it's open to whoever want to join the discussion. I know, in this
case, you were thinking at the Events side, BTW, we have a team that
is working hardly keeping a global strategy and I think they could use
better than here all the Marketing suggestion you want to bring to the
project.

3) I think every community has its own strategy, I see Sri Lanka
community has just done a great join, and, I want to suggest, if you
accept this, to keep this way, working on events and make people know
what Fedora is and how to join Fedora. Thanks

That would be an intermediate step to get initial aproval, as well as get an update on
who's still active or not

Yes Thats Acceptable.i also applied for ambassadorship and i am waiting to
go deeper into fedora and before that i even do not want to be an
ambassador.
But, we should direct those peoples mistake politely. as we are a community
to help people and promote fedora. sometime things with little significance
may come to us.

 It seems to me like there is being over-reacted to. All that was asked was
a simple question, and now its turning into we should have a cert test so
you can be an ambassador. I gotta say, it doesnt look very friendly and
inviting to newer ambassadors when there question is turned around on them

There is more to this issue than this particular thread and it is
something the Ambassadors have struggled with.
The Ambassadors is not a fan club, or user group, though we are all
fans and users for the most part. The issue is that the function of
the Ambassadors is to represent Fedora and serve as a liaison to the
wider free software community and the public at large. The problem
arises when those people tasked with the job know little or nothing
about Fedora and it's goals and ideology. For instance, we repeatedly
had Ambassadors who argued for and couldn't understand why Fedora
didn't include non-free software such as proprietary kernel drivers.
Those individuals, who are no doubt fine upstanding people in their
own right, can't do a good job of representing Fedora because they
don't understand Fedora. We've put in place a mentoring system for
prospective Ambassadors that hopefully will eliminate much of this
problem, and help better educate those who wish to get involved with
this sub-project.

Think about the political analogue - I could not effectively be an
Ambassador for Mozambique, not because I am an idiot, but because I
know practically nothing about Mozambique, I've never been there,
never experienced the country, and certainly have no idea of how to
represent the country of Mozambique to other countries.

for me and for everyone in the project (and sure for everyone who will
read the thread trough the Mailing List archive).

This isn't an attack to a person or to a question, this is a
meditation of what an Ambassadors is and should be.

We are here to learn from each other. We also have to keep in mind
that, like David suggested, we are the voice of Fedora Project: we are
here to give answers, right answers, to people that don't know what
Fedora, Linux and open source is.

We, Ambassadors, have a great responsability, one of the hardest one:
while developers has to assure that code must be stable for the
release, we have to assure that community understand the project and
join/enjoy our work.

That's why we have to guarantee a basic level, that's why people like
Joerg, Susmit and many others volunteered to mentor newbie and people
during the first steps in the project.

That's why you haven't to see this like an attack but as a occasion to
improve yourself, like everyone here is trying to do everyday.

So, if you have question, doubts on what Ambassadors project does or
want to learn something more before going mainstream, I suggest to
contact your local mentor. That's an advice that comes from my first
days/months in the project (*), during that time I learned a lot of
things talking (and learning) from someone who better that me knew
what to do. It really helped me a lot :)

yup, agree.

however, the mentoring process is for new ambassadors ..  how are we
going to (re)educate our current ambassadors to get them with the
correct mindset and information ? ..

I believe I know and understand about Fedora and believe I can
represent Fedora, however, some of the information I had might be
wrong, or my approach might be is inappropriate, etc, should we have
some sort of resource area, where ambassadors, new and old alike, can
refer or study from ? ..

mentoring for new ambassadors is great, but the old ones might need
some resources to study ..

I agree with the above comment that blue is pretty, and that's usually what
I say. I also point out that Fedora project is usually ahead of the pack in
using new things, such as ext4, and also we have a 20 second boot time.
Which I think is epic and deserves a honor in its own right, (mostly because
i am very impatient).
