I have installed Fedora 13 Goddard x86_64 in my machine and I've updated to KDE 4.5, in order to run Skype I installed some 32 bit Qt libraries and when I installed the new KDE desktop I had to remove them because KDE 4.4 uses the "1:4.6" version of these libraries and KDE 4.5 the "1:4.7"... Now I have KDE 4.5 and everything is fine but I can't run lastest Skype because it needs the "1:4.6" Qt libraries, it doesn't work with the new ones, but if I remove the new ones and I replace them with the older ones, many apps seem to be "downgraded" or they just don't work anymore... Does this mean we're not having Skype in Fedora 14 KDE Spin as it's going to be based on KDE 4.5?
Many users need skype (in my case I'm running it in a Windows 7 VM) But without it we can't offer reliable "Videocalls" as they're not implemented in IM Clients Linux have.

Let's see. Supposedly skype works in Fedora 13 with the version of KDE (4.4.5) that is available for it from the official repos, right? Then you said you installed KDE 4.5... which broke skype. Then downgrading doesn't seem to work well because you have some breakage. Sounds completely self-inflicted to me considering you've had to go out of the stock repos for KDE 4.5 and skype.
Regarding your Fedora 14 question, I would imagine that the skype folks would release an update that is compatible with Fedora 14 / KDE 4.5 / QT 4.7 shortly after the release of Fedora 14 but who knows.
As an alternative for video chat Google Talk is available in someone's personal repo... and probably officially released in .rpm format already or real soon now. I'm not sure, I don't keep up with third-party stuff too much.
TYL,

This is neither « urgent » nor ambassadors related, and would be much more appropriate on the Fedora users mailing-list: https://admin.fedoraproject.org/mailman/listinfo/users
Also, just for the record, video and audio calls work perfectly in Empathy with Jabber/XMPP and probably other protocols. Pidgin might implement this too.
Finally, Ekiga allows you to do PC-to-Phone just fine, and it has for a few years.
We have a FOSS offering that can compete with the proprietary one, and as an ambassador you might prefer using and promoting the former rather than asking for help on the latter. ;)
Cheers,

So, a few things here...
This isn't Ambassadors material, please keep it either on the users@ list or (probably better) the kde@ list, where most KDE and Qt issues are handled. This is most definitely not the place for it, "urgent" or not.
Skype is indeed NOT going to be on the Fedora 14 KDE Spin as it is non-Free software. From my PoV, it's harmful for Ambassadors to promote the use of this software as it encourages lock in to proprietary applications and (probably worse) proprietary protocols. Also, as you can see by your mail, using proprietary applications can be more than a "philosophical" issue, given the breakage you caused yourself by installing it. Imagine telling a new user how to do this, and realizing they have just broken or messed up their installation. Does it really put our distribution in a positive light? You should be encouraging users to embrace Free solutions such as Ekiga softphone, Pidgin and other SIP-based solutions which can be properly packaged for our distribution.
Lastly, Qt is supposed to be backwards compatible, meaning that applications compiled in Qt 4.6 are supposed to work in Qt 4.7, etc... If you have encountered a regression, file a bug at Nokia's Qt bug tracker[1], and let the KDE Fedora list know of the issue. This is not the place to discuss such issues.

Well, I know about the free alternatives, what I'm discussing here is that many users USE SKYPE. We have free software but we can't tell those users who use skype: CANCEL YOUR SKYPE ACCOUNT BECAUSE NOW YOU'RE FREE. We, as ambassadors, are supposed to help the user and this is an issue that is going to affect many skype users in fedora 14 KDE unless someone finds a solution.
Yes, we have free software, but tell me: Any of our free software supports skype's protocol? The answer is NO. and by "demonizing" skype's use you're commiting fanaticism... If GNU/LINUX and OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE is what matters to you, change to UTUTO or GNEWSENSE as Fedora isn't considered COMPLETELY OPEN SOURCE by the Gnu Foundation.
I'm not gonna continue arguing... I'm open to solutions, not "empty opinions"
And for me, it's sad that some ambassadors are not thinking in the future of the user... This is not the way to win "ground" in technologies battle...

No need to shout, this is not an ambassador related issue, and therefore does not belong here. Please take this to proper forum. I know that both skype and KDE has their own forums to discuss issues. Thanks.

@John: I wrote an article that explains the answer to your question for the Fedora LATAM Magazine, I'm going to give a brief answer here for you:
1) What is about fedora that matters to me?
It's care for giving the Linux user the most cutting edge technology is what has made me a faithful follower of Fedora Linux and this same "love for innovation" was what brought me into the Fedora Project world, because I personally quite like innovation, most if we're talking about computer's technology of these days...
2) Why should these users use fedora at all?
I think because Fedora is the perfect mix between Technology and choice, it's free, ir's secure, it's elegant and it's capable of about everything because of it's community. If we can get more users involved into the project we can give a better service that other distros and we can have more followers that love fedora, because we have the greatest linux distribution in the world...
3) What about fedora drew me to it and made me want to promote it?
My passion for innovation and the will to give the user Top Line software that is usable in their lives, For example, let me tell you an anecdote:
Here at México is an organism called IEMS, this organism provides free High School Education for the mexicans and they use linux as their base system... Since years ago, they're using Mandriva for the "General" part and for the music session they used to use Ubuntu Studio.
Now, Since months ago, they were having problems with Ubuntu Studio, one software they used to use didn't sound so the students weren't able to take their music class as it was suposed to be. Then in a Linux conference I met a Music teacher of ONE of these schools and called me to solve the problem because no one at that time was able to do it...
I had trouble solving their problem, but at the end, my solution was changing Ubuntu Studio for Fedora, wich works great and now, what started in that ONE school, is expanding: From that day, ALL SCHOOLS of the IEMS organism are replacing Ubuntu Studio for Fedora, and the executives and bosses are in talks to standarize ALL computers with only one distribution: Fedora.
Is because this stories of success I've lived with this distro I'm gonna continue working for it, I'm going to promote it and also, I'm going to support the final user who wants to use Linux and do not "have a headache", Because Linux is for everyone, but not everyone finds it as easy to use as maybe you or me find it.

Manuel, thanks a lot for taking the time to share that story with us. It is very inspiring. I think you will make a fine ambassador. One thing you will find within the Fedora community is a strong bias in favor of open source solutions to software problems. That shouldn't be surprising and it is not fanatical. Freedom is one of our community's core values. It is something we hold as dear as innovation which is another one of our core values. There are ways for users to get help with non-free bits that they wish to use but I think you will find there will always be some resistence to promoting them over free alternatives. So don't get too frustrated with us when we stand up for freedom. It really matters to us along with fostering innovation and building a strong and friendly community.
John
Manuel,
This is not an Ambassadors matters, but you are right about caring for users, regarding Skype many people use it but if Skype will not work with the new version of KDE, there is GNOME and it is a matter for Skype people, not Fedora, we do not package Skype. If Skype want to be ready on the Linux and KDE world they will take care of that.
Fedora is for innovation as you mention, but seems like you are asking Fedora to stop doing it because of Skype. I'm sure Fedora Users that know what Fedora is about will understand.

Yes, I know the solutions are:
1) Switching to Gnome
2) Stay (or downgrade in the case) to KDE 4.4
3) Wait until skype's give a solution
4) Only use 32 bit systems
I do not ask fedora to stop innovation in pro of propietary software (that's crazy) But I wanted you to know this because I wanted to know if there's something we can do to help the user... Anyway, let the time advances... The future will give us a veredict.
Thank's for your answers...

Switching to Gnome
Stay (or downgrade in the case) to KDE 4.4
Wait until skype's give a solution
Only use 32 bit systems
I do not ask fedora to stop innovation in pro of propietary software (that's crazy) But I wanted you to know this because I wanted to know if there's something we can do to help the user... Anyway, let the time advances... The future will give us a veredict.
Thank's for your answers...
I've been investigating... is Fedora's problem, not skype... Fedora 13 does not provide a 32 bit package for the qt libraries in their "1:4.7" version, only a 64 bit one, at least
in my package manager this is what I have, and I also have a 32 bit version but it's only of the "1:4.6" release... Hope you take this in count...
New Libraries in both architechtures seem to be present in fedora 14 and RPMFind says in Fedora 15 too.

Manuel,
This is not an Ambassadors matters, but you are right about caring for users, regarding Skype many people use it but if Skype will not work with the new version of KDE, there is GNOME and it is a matter for Skype people, not Fedora, we do not package Skype. If Skype want to be ready on the Linux and KDE world they will take care of that.
Fedora is for innovation as you mention, but seems like you are asking Fedora to stop doing it because of Skype. I'm sure Fedora Users that know what Fedora is about will understand.

What about Fedora draws you to it and makes you want to promote Fedora? @John: I wrote an article that explains the answer to your question for the Fedora LATAM Magazine, I'm going to give a brief answer here for you:
- What is about fedora that matters to me?
It's care for giving the Linux user the most cutting edge technology is what has made me a faithful follower of Fedora Linux and this same "love for innovation" was what brought me into the Fedora Project world, because I personally quite like innovation, most if we're talking about computer's technology of these days...
- Why should these users use fedora at all?
I think because Fedora is the perfect mix between Technology and choice, it's free, ir's secure, it's elegant and it's capable of about everything because of it's community. If we can get more users involved into the project we can give a better service that other distros and we can have more followers that love fedora, because we have the greatest linux distribution in the world...
- What about fedora drew me to it and made me want to promote it?
:)

I've got the solution, thanks!! Now Skype is working and I have the lastest 32 Bit Qt libraries installed in my 64 bit Fedora 13 with KDE 4.5!! :D
2010/8/30 Manuel Escudero Jmlevick@gmail.com:
The other day I found a very useful image that help me understand better where I was standing within Fedora Project... is not up to date, but still helpful ... http://herlo.fedorapeople.org/files/vym-fpo.pdf
That came from a blog post ... http://sexysexypenguins.com/2008/11/21/mind-maps-the-fedora-project/
Best regards
