Anaconda Usability Test Administrators Worksheet

Hi Everyone,

I have created a Test Administrators Worksheet for the administrators of the test to have with them during the usability testing. This will help guide them through the installer and have a more structured way of making notes during the testing. Anaconda change suggestion with firstboot change suggestion

I am not sure how to proceed.  I am an end-user and I would like to suggest a change to move a function from anaconda to first boot.

That function is the software installation. Generally, with anaconda, on smaller systems, a total selection of software in a category (gnome and its additions), results in a lockup due to out of ram space.

If DE and the related software was moved to first-boot, there is the potential to use a user's slash tmp, and to allow non-mutual exclusion of software selection. Furthermore, at this stage, the software that will be downloaded will of course be the most current.

Has any thought been given to this approach in the past?  Has this approach any merit. It would make for a smaller anaconda.

Anaconda change suggestion with firstboot change suggestion

Hi,

it certainly is an interesting idea, but I am not sure how will other users
react to two phase package installation (Yum takes quite some time to compute
dependencies..).

There is also one catch: To have a graphical firstboot, most of the Gtk/Gnome
environment must be already present in the system.

So I am afraid it is not quite doable with the current set of package groups.

Anaconda change suggestion with firstboot change suggestion

Hi Martin

I do not believe the idea to move the installation of DE to first boot has negative impacts except for live CD's. I am not saying it should be done anytime without a thorough evaluation, say around Fedora 21 or 22 (2 years hence).

What else could get pulled in with First boot execution to achieve that change, and is the change worth it?   In the past, with other distributions doing network installations (as we did with older Fedora versions), the latest version of the file and dependencies were pulled in, so there was no two stage operation.  We built an up-to-date distribution.

Today (F18) we do an install from DVD without pulling in updates, and then in stage 2, we do a yum update. This must persist because a kernel change or kernel library may be pulled in and screw that process up.

Ask your peers what they think of the idea. I do not need recognition for the idea, except if it goes forward and  something goes wrong.
