These two lists should definitely go to some "public" place like ``pyanaconda/constants.py`` so that they can be used in other places too.
Other than the suggestion above I have the same concerns as @bcl.
So, just to summarize here what I've heard on IRC: The main concern is that there are places in the presentation layer where a user would be presented with a link that includes the hostname. For example, at the console, they would see a command telling them how to reach the server with VNC in order to perform a graphical install of a headless system. If this is randomly-generated, then that link will almost certainly not work because it will not be available in DNS.
Proposed approach: if the final portion of the domain component is .lan (which all randomly-generated hosts are), then when presenting this to the user we will provide the IP address instead of the hostname. Would that be acceptable.
As for why we are doing this at all: this is to simplify the domain-joining process. When joining FreeIPA and AD domains, the machine's full hostname is used as its identity and added to DNS. Using localhost.localdomain for this causes significant problems. Users have to take an additional manual step of changing their hostnames before they can join the domain.
I have other patches in the works for changing the domain part of the hostname on domain-join, so it's primarily the host part of the hostname that is important here. However, for users attempting to deploy a FreeIPA domain controller (possibly for evaluation), having a random domain pre-selected for them is also simpler.
Don't take me wrong, but I think it would be better to just ship some simple script that would generate and set such hostname and make it's usage a recommended first step in the FreeIPA deployment guide/docs instead of making things more complicated in anaconda.

Are we talking about kickstart installations, as there is not yet any GUI for joining a domain during the installation ? In that case the realm[0] command might be changed to trigger a random hostname generation if it is used. Or maybe something like network --random -hostname ?

These are already part of the deployment guides/docs, but they have proven time and time again to be a major sticking point for users (who rarely read docs until they've already made a mistake). Not all problems can be solved by technical solutions, but this one easily can.
It's worth noting that ours is the only platform I'm aware of that chooses such an odd default: * Mac and Ubuntu both require the user to select a machine name explicitly during the install process. (Tested with OSX 10.10 and Ubuntu 14.04.2) * Windows generates a random name of the form WIN-XXXXXXXXX. (Tested with Windows Server 2012r2)
(Note: I only tested these cases when DHCP was not configured to hand out names; it may be that they behave differently in those circumstances, but that's not the concern in this PR).
Can one of the admins verify this patch?
@sgallagher There's precedent in Linux for this too. SUSE's YaST automatically generates a random hostname "linux-XXXXX", though irritatingly enough I can't figure out how to set a hostname at install time in YaST.
A similar strategy could be used in Anaconda, too.
