Fedora Update Notification
FEDORA-2004-424
2004-11-30
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Product : Fedora Core 3
Name : policycoreutils
Version : 1.18.1
Release : 2
Summary : SELinux policy core utilities.
Description :
Security-enhanced Linux is a patch of the Linux® kernel and a number
of utilities with enhanced security functionality designed to add
mandatory access controls to Linux. The Security-enhanced Linux
kernel contains new architectural components originally developed to
improve the security of the Flask operating system. These
architectural components provide general support for the enforcement
of many kinds of mandatory access control policies, including those
based on the concepts of Type Enforcement®, Role-based Access
Control, and Multi-level Security.
policycoreutils contains the policy core utilities that are required
for basic operation of a SELinux system. These utilities include
load_policy to load policies, setfiles to label filesystems, newrole
to switch roles, and run_init to run /etc/init.d scripts in the proper
context.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
FixFiles.cron is not needed for targeted policy and needs to be reworked
for strict policy. Removing prevents possible relabeling problems.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
* Fri Nov 12 2004 Dan Walsh <dwalsh(a)redhat.com> 1.18.1-2
- Upgrade to latest from NSA
- Eliminate fixfiles.cron

Fedora Update Notification
FEDORA-2004-458
2004-11-30
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Product : Fedora Core 3
Name : prelink
Version : 0.3.3
Release : 0.fc3
Summary : An ELF prelinking utility
Description :
The prelink package contains a utility which modifies ELF shared libraries
and executables, so that far less relocations need to be resolved at runtime
and thus programs come up faster.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
* Tue Nov 23 2004 Jakub Jelinek <jakub(a)redhat.com> 0.3.3-0.fc3
- if layout code needs to re-prelink some library, make sure
all libraries that depend on it are re-prelinked too (#140081)
- add several more checks before deciding it is ok to prelink a binary
(even if another bug like #140081 was in, these checks should hopefully
catch it and refuse to (re-)prelink the binary)
- added new PRELINK_NONRPM_CHECK_INTERVAL variable to /etc/prelink,
defaulting to 7 days. Prelink nightly job will not do anything
if that interval has not elapsed since last prelinking and
and the rpm database has not been modified since that prelinking.
This is useful if you rely on rpm/up2date/yum/apt-rpm for library
and binary updates. If you combine it with other means (installs
from source, tarballs etc.), you probably want to
set PRELINK_NONRPM_CHECK_INTERVAL=0.
- update prelink man page (#126468)

Fedora Update Notification
FEDORA-2004-460
2004-11-29
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Product : Fedora Core 3
Name : samba
Version : 3.0.9
Release : 1.fc3
Summary : The Samba SMB server.
Description :
Samba is the protocol by which a lot of PC-related machines share
files, printers, and other information (such as lists of available
files and printers). The Windows NT, OS/2, and Linux operating systems
support this natively, and add-on packages can enable the same thing
for DOS, Windows, VMS, UNIX of all kinds, MVS, and more. This package
provides an SMB server that can be used to provide network services to
SMB (sometimes called "Lan Manager") clients. Samba uses NetBIOS over
TCP/IP (NetBT) protocols and does NOT need the NetBEUI (Microsoft Raw
NetBIOS frame) protocol.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
This update closes two security holes: CAN-2004-0882 and CAN-2004-0930.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello Fedora Users! The has been updated for Fedora Core 3! This means
that it has some new questions answered for Fedora Core 3 users, and it
also has a new yum.conf for Fedora Core 3. As always, the FAQ is at:
http://www.fedorafaq.org/
The old Fedora Core 2 FAQ has been archived at:
http://www.fedorafaq.org/fc2/
This update also brings a new feature to fedorafaq.org, the Fedora
Basics FAQ. This FAQ answers basic questions about Linux and Fedora,
such as "How do I open a terminal?" or "What is rescue mode and how do I
boot into it?" The Fedora Basics FAQ is at:
http://www.fedorafaq.org/basics/
There will probably be many updates in the coming days and weeks, so
keep checking back for updates!
As always, I'm looking to add more useful information to the Fedora
Basics FAQ and the Unofficial Fedora FAQ, based on your input! If you
have any suggestions, please feel free to contribute:

Have fun!

Product : Fedora Core 3
Name : spamassassin
Version : 3.0.1
Release : 0.FC3
Summary : Spam filter for email which can be invoked from mail
delivery agents.
Description :
SpamAssassin provides you with a way to reduce if not completely eliminate
Unsolicited Commercial Email (SPAM) from your incoming email. It can
be invoked by a MDA such as sendmail or postfix, or can be called from
a procmail script, .forward file, etc. It uses a genetic-algorithm
evolved scoring system to identify messages which look spammy, then
adds headers to the message so they can be filtered by the user's mail
reading software. This distribution includes the spamd/spamc components
which create a server that considerably speeds processing of mail.
To enable spamassassin, if you are receiving mail locally, simply add
this line to your ~/.procmailrc:
INCLUDERC=/etc/mail/spamassassin/spamassassin-default.rc
To filter spam for all users, add that line to /etc/procmailrc
(creating if necessary).

- filter out duplicate monitor entries (bug #118976)
* Wed Mar 17 2004 Mike A. Harris <mharris(a)redhat.com> 1.0.11-1
- Change Requires: XFree86 to Requires: /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86, which is
what it appears from the sources is being called. That will need to
change
when the server gets renamed, so it should be implemented IMHO in a
way
that is not hard coded. This should suffice for now however.
- Changed package description to remove "XFree86" name and replace it
with
generic "X Window System X server" term.
- Added the "via", and "voodoo" drivers that were missing to internal
driver
list in videocardDialog.py. The list is still missing stuff though,
but
those sprung to mind.
- Added force-tag target to Makefile with tag -cF
- Added tag target without -F to Makefile
- Removed -F from archive target as that can potentially blow away an
already
tagged and released version from the repository if someone
accidentally
does a "make archive" without updating the spec file Version: field
like
I just about did. ;o)
* Mon Mar 01 2004 Brent Fox <bfox(a)redhat.com> 1.0.10-1

Product : Fedora Core 3
Name : xorg-x11
Version : 6.8.1
Release : 12.FC3.1

X.org X11 is an open source implementation of the X Window System. It
provides the basic low level functionality which full fledged
graphical user interfaces (GUIs) such as GNOME and KDE are designed

Several integer overflow flaws in the X.Org libXpm library used to decode
XPM (X PixMap) images have been found and addressed. An attacker could
create a carefully crafted XPM file which would cause an application to
crash or potentially execute arbitrary code if opened by a victim. The
Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned
the name CAN-2004-0914 to this issue.
Users are advised to upgrade to these erratum packages, which contain
backported security patches as well as other bug fixes.

Fedora Update Notification
FEDORA-2004-433
2004-11-17
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Product : Fedora Core 2
Name : xorg-x11
Version : 6.7.0
Release : 10
Summary : The basic fonts, programs and docs for an X workstation.
Description :
X.org X11 is an open source implementation of the X Window System. It
provides the basic low level functionality which full fledged
graphical user interfaces (GUIs) such as GNOME and KDE are designed
upon.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
Several integer overflow flaws in the X.Org libXpm library used to decode
XPM (X PixMap) images have been found and addressed. An attacker could
create a carefully crafted XPM file which would cause an application to
crash or potentially execute arbitrary code if opened by a victim. The
Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned
the name CAN-2004-0914 to this issue.
Users are advised to upgrade to these erratum packages, which contain
backported security patches as well as other bug fixes.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
* Mon Nov 15 2004 Kristian Høgsberg <krh(a)redhat.com> 6.7.0-10
- Added xorg-x11-6.7.0-xpm-security-fixes-CAN-2004-0914.patch to fix a
number of Xpm issues found by Thomas Biege <thomas(a)suse.de>
(#136169)

Fedora Update Notification
FEDORA-2004-414
2004-11-11
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Product : Fedora Core 2
Name : unarj
Version : 2.63a
Release : 7
Summary : An uncompressor for .arj format archive files.
Description :
The UNARJ program is used to uncompress .arj format archives. The .arj
format archive was mostly used on DOS machines.
Install the unarj package if you need to uncompress .arj format
archives.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
A buffer overflow bug has been discovered in unarj when handling long
file names contained in an archive. An attacker could create an archive
with a specially crafted path which could cause unarj to crash or
execute arbitrary instructions. The Common Vulnerabilities and
Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CAN-2004-0947 to
this issue.
Additionally, a path traversal vulnerability exists in unarj which
allows an attacker to extract files to the parent ("..") directory. When
used recursively, this vulnerability can be used to overwrite critical
system files and programs.
Users of unarj are advised to upgrade to these packages.

Fedora Update Notification
FEDORA-2004-412
2004-11-11
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Product : Fedora Core 3
Name : gd
Version : 2.0.28
Release : 1.30.1
Summary : A graphics library for quick creation of PNG or JPEG images.
Description :
The gd graphics library allows your code to quickly draw images
complete with lines, arcs, text, multiple colors, cut and paste from
other images, and flood fills, and to write out the result as a PNG or
JPEG file. This is particularly useful in Web applications, where PNG
and JPEG are two of the formats accepted for inline images by most
browsers. Note that gd is not a paint program.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
Several buffer overflows were reported in various memory allocation calls.
An attacker could create a carefully crafted image file in such a
way that it could cause ImageMagick to execute arbitrary code when
processing the image. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project
(cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CAN-2004-0990 to these issues.
Whilst researching the fixes to these overflows, additional buffer
overflows were discovered in calls to gdMalloc. The Common Vulnerabilities
and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CAN-2004-0941
to these issues.
Users of gd should upgrade to these updated packages, which contain a
backported security patch, and are not vulnerable to these issues.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

complete with lines, arcs, text, multiple colors, cut and paste from
other images, and flood fills, and to write out the result as a PNG or

Summary : The GNU libc libraries.
Description :
The glibc package contains standard libraries which are used by

Fedora Update Notification
FEDORA-2004-389
2004-11-08
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Product : Fedora Core 3
Name : udev
Version : 039
Release : 10.FC3.1
Summary : A userspace implementation of devfs
Description :
udev is a implementation of devfs in userspace using sysfs and
/sbin/hotplug. It requires a 2.6 kernel to run properly.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:
Due to debugging code left accidently in the FC3 udev package,
SIGCHLD signals are blocked in udev, which prevents getting the proper
exit status in udev.rules. This means no cdrom symlinks are created
and pam_console does not apply desktop user ownerships to any cdrom
devices.
All users are urged to upgrade to this version after the installation
of Fedora Core 3.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
* Thu Nov 04 2004 Harald Hoyer <harald(a)redhat.com> - 039-10
- speed improvement, scripts in rules are now executed only once,
instead of four times
* Thu Nov 04 2004 Harald Hoyer <harald(a)redhat.com> - 039-9
- removed wrong SIG_IGN for SIGCHLD
- moved ide media check to script to wait for the procfs
