---- Outage: Wiki, Insight, Smolt, Wordpress, Zarafa database outage - 2011-05-04 20:00 UTC ----
Kevin Fenzi announced[1],
"There will be an outage starting at 2011-05-04 20:00UTC, which will last approximately 2 hours.
To convert UTC to your local time, take a look at [2] or run:
date -d '2011-04-21 20:00 UTC'
----- Reason for outage: -----
The database backend for several services is being moved to new hardware and upgraded. This will result in an outage of services using that database server. Note that some services should move quickly and downtime on them will be small. The wiki should be up reasonably quickly, but smolt may be down for much of the window.

---- Changes to the Packaging Guidelines ----
Tom Callaway announced[1],
"Here are the latest changes to the Fedora Packaging Guidelines:
---
A new set of guidelines have been written for handling systemd in packages:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Guidelines:Systemd https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:ScriptletSnippets#Systemd
---
A new set of guidelines have been written for packaging Octave packages: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Octave
---
Some clarification was added to the Guidelines section on Macros. Previously, it said:
"Use macros instead of hard-coded directory names (see Packaging:RPMMacros )."
Now, that line has been replaced with:
"Packagers are strongly encouraged to use macros instead of hard-coded directory names (see Packaging:RPMMacros ). However, in situations where the macro is longer than the path it represents, or situations where the packager feels it is cleaner to use the actual path, the packager is permitted to use the actual path instead of the macro. There are several caveats to this approach:
* The package must be consistent. For any given path, within the same
spec, use either a hard-coded path or a macro, not a combination of the two.
* %{_libdir} must always be used for binary libraries due to multi-lib,
you may not substitute a hard-coded path. "
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Guidelines#Macros
---
The Guidelines covering MinGW packaging have been updated for Fedora 16. The previous guidelines still apply for older Fedora releases (Fedora 15 and older) and all RHEL releases.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:MinGW https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:MinGW_Old
---
The Packaging Guidelines have been updated to allow the use of /run and to clarify that directory hierarchies not listed in the FHS are not allowed unless listed in the Packaging Guidelines.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Guidelines#Filesystem_Layout
---
In the past (pre rpm 4.4), it was necessary to have a %defattr section at the beginning of each %files section, but this is now the default and no longer necessary to explicitly include.
The guidelines have been updated in numerous places to remove references to hard-coded %defattr sections.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging/Guidelines#File_Permissions
---
The Scriptlets for GSettings have been updated to:
%postun
if [ $1 -eq 0 ] ; then
glib-compile-schemas %{_datadir}/glib-2.0/schemas &> /dev/null || :
fi
%posttrans
glib-compile-schemas %{_datadir}/glib-2.0/schemas &> /dev/null || :
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:ScriptletSnippets#GSettings_Schema
---
These guidelines (and changes) were approved by the Fedora Packaging Committee (FPC).
Many thanks to Christopher Aillon, Richard W. M. Jones, Erik van Pienbroek, Lennart Poettering, Orion Poplawski, Julian Sikorski, and all of the members of the FPC, for assisting in drafting, refining, and passing these guidelines.
As a reminder: The Fedora Packaging Guidelines are living documents! If you find something missing, incorrect, or in need of revision, you can suggest a draft change. The procedure for this is documented here[2]
Thanks,
~spot "

--- Fedora Events ---
The purpose of event is to build a global Fedora events calendar, and to identify responsible Ambassadors for each event. The event page is laid out by quarter and by region. Please maintain the layout, as it is crucial for budget planning. Events can be added to this page whether or not they have an Ambassador owner. Events without an owner are not eligible for funding, but being listed allows any Ambassador to take ownership of the event and make it eligible for funding. In plain words, Fedora events are the exclusive and source of marketing, learning and meeting all the fellow community people around you. So, please mark your agenda with the following events to consider attending or volunteering near you!
---- Upcoming Events (March - May 2011) ----
* North America (NA)[1]
* Central & South America (LATAM): [2]
* Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA)[3]

--- Introducing Your Honey to Linux (Technewsworld.com) ---
Gianluca Sforna forwarded[1] a posting about his experience converting his significant other to Fedora:
"A couple years ago, I bought my wife a new Thinkpad," Slashdot blogger Chris Travers recalled. "She made a specific request: 'I don't want to use something weird, like Linux.'" Though the laptop came with Vista, it "never worked right. It had video card issues, power management issues and networking issues." After a few days, Travers' wife asked him to "'do anything you can to make this work or return it,'" he said. "So I installed Fedora Linux."

--- From Ubuntu to Fedora – Landing on foreign soil (the good, the bad and the ugly) (omgubuntu.co.uk) ---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] an article about switching from Ubuntu to Fedora, from one user's perspective:
"It is the next best thing after Ubuntu. If it wasn’t for the missing Ubuntu Community, Software Center and annoying Yum it would be the Ubuntu killer. While Fedora also has a community it is hardly as badass and big as the Ubuntu one.
With Fedora you are getting GNOME 3. No GNOME 2 anymore. With the introduction of GNOME 3 comes a whole new UX needs some getting used to. However after using it for 2 or 3 days its hard to go back to a GNOME 2 environment. Its a solid distro. I experienced no crashes or hick-ups. With some googling and help from Fedora users and developers I managed to install everything I needed."

--- Fusion Linux 14 Thorium - Fedora Plus Plus (dedoimedo.com) ---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] an article about Fusion Linux, based on Fedora 14:
"Comparing to Fedora, Fusion Linux is a clear winner, as it only builds upon the existing without taking away. The only visible downside is the increased memory consumption, but it's nothing drastic. However, if you pit Fusion against other leading distros, there's a bit of a problem. While they offer similar or longer-term support, they have none of the crashes and instability packaged into Fusion. This could deter potential users."

--- Fedora 15 Beta Has GNOME 3 (softpedia.com) ---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] another article on Gnome 3 in Fedora 15:
"This make Fedora 15 an ideal computing platform for anyone who wants to use their computer productively. Whether you're a student, a parent, an office worker, a programmer, an artist, an engineer, a writer -- Fedora has what you need to do the things you care about!"

--- Fedora 15 beta released as GNOME 3 backlash grows (Desktoplinux.com) ---
Kara Schiltz forwarded[1] an article about the release of Fedora 15 beta:
"The Fedora Project announced the beta release of Fedora 15 "Lovelock," featuring the new GNOME 3 desktop[2], the Systemd initialization system, and a new dynamic firewall feature. Meanwhile, GNOME 3 has received mixed reviews, with many claiming the project went too far in simplifying the interface.
The new beta version of Fedora 15 follows an alpha that _arrived in early March[3]. The final is expected in late May. Sponsored by Red Hat, the community-based Fedora is aligned with the commercial _Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)[4] release, with Fedora largely used as an upstream, exploratory sandbox for Red Hat."

--- Test Days ---
Thursday 2011-04-21 was the last of three GNOME 3 Test Days[1]. The event went off smoothly with a good turnout of testers finding the GNOME 3 experience mostly polished but still exposing several bugs for the developers to work on. Vitezslav Humpa posted a recap[2] of the event.
Today, 2011-04-28, is cloud Test Day, where the cloud SIG is guiding testers in running Fedora 15 on Amazon's EC2 cloud, and testing out the Fedora 15 features BoxGrinder[3] (a tool designed to make it simple to rapidly create Fedora-based appliances and deploy them to various virtual platforms) and CloudFS[4] (a cloud-ready distributed filesystem). If you're interested in the cutting (bleeding?) edge of cloud development with Fedora, come and dive in to the BoxGrinder[5] and EC2[6] events!
The cloud events will likely be the final Test Days of the Fedora 15 cycle, as we move towards final freeze and the focus on stabilizing the release.

Many group members were testing the recently-released Fedora 15 Beta. Sean Darcy was having trouble with preupgrade[1], while Göran Uddeborg wondered where his system beep had gone[2]. Per Bothner was having trouble with his NVIDIA adapter[3], and Andre Robatino filed a bug[4] on an issue several testers had noted where enabling session saving could cause GNOME Shell to fail to start[5]. John Morris reported several issues he ran into[6], prompting responses explaining some of them. Thomas Gilliard continued to test Sugar nightly images[7] [8].

--- Fedora 15 preparation ---
The second blocker bug review meeting for Fedora 15 final took place on Thursday 2011-04-21[1], due to the Good Friday holiday falling in many places on 2011-04-22. The group reviewed the full list of proposed and accepted final release blockers and made good progress. The first Test Compose for Fedora 15 is planned for 2011-05-02.

Outage: Wiki, Insight, Smolt, Wordpress, Zarafa database outage - 2011-05-04 20:00 UTC
by Kevin Fenzi
Outage: Wiki, Insight, Smolt, Wordpress, Zarafa database outage - 2011-05-04 20:00 UTC
There will be an outage starting at 2011-05-04 20:00UTC, which will last
approximately 2 hours.
To convert UTC to your local time, take a look at
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Infrastructure/UTCHowto
or run:
date -d '2011-05-04 20:00 UTC'
Reason for outage:
The database backend for several services is being moved to new hardware
and upgraded. This will result in an outage of services using that
database server. Note that some services should move quickly and downtime
on them will be small. The wiki should be up reasonably quickly, but smolt may
be down for much of the window.

[Guidelines Change] Changes to the Packaging Guidelines
by Tom Callaway
Here are the latest changes to the Fedora Packaging Guidelines:
---
A new set of guidelines have been written for handling systemd in packages:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Guidelines:Systemd
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:ScriptletSnippets#Systemd
---
A new set of guidelines have been written for packaging Octave packages:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Octave
---
Some clarification was added to the Guidelines section on Macros.
Previously, it said:
"Use macros instead of hard-coded directory names (see
Packaging:RPMMacros )."
Now, that line has been replaced with:
"Packagers are strongly encouraged to use macros instead of hard-coded
directory names (see Packaging:RPMMacros ). However, in situations where
the macro is longer than the path it represents, or situations where the
packager feels it is cleaner to use the actual path, the packager is
permitted to use the actual path instead of the macro. There are several
caveats to this approach:
* The package must be consistent. For any given path, within the same
spec, use either a hard-coded path or a macro, not a combination of the two.
* %{_libdir} must always be used for binary libraries due to multi-lib,
you may not substitute a hard-coded path. "
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Guidelines#Macros
---
The Guidelines covering MinGW packaging have been updated for Fedora 16.
The previous guidelines still apply for older Fedora releases (Fedora 15
and older) and all RHEL releases.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:MinGW
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:MinGW_Old
---
The Packaging Guidelines have been updated to allow the use of /run and
to clarify that directory hierarchies not listed in the FHS are not
allowed unless listed in the Packaging Guidelines.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Guidelines#Filesystem_Layout
---
In the past (pre rpm 4.4), it was necessary to have a %defattr section
at the beginning of each %files section, but this is now the default and
no longer necessary to explicitly include.
The guidelines have been updated in numerous places to remove references
to hard-coded %defattr sections.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging/Guidelines#File_Permissions
---
The Scriptlets for GSettings have been updated to:
%postun
if [ $1 -eq 0 ] ; then
glib-compile-schemas %{_datadir}/glib-2.0/schemas &> /dev/null || :
fi
%posttrans
glib-compile-schemas %{_datadir}/glib-2.0/schemas &> /dev/null || :
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:ScriptletSnippets#GSettings_Schema
---
These guidelines (and changes) were approved by the Fedora Packaging
Committee (FPC).
Many thanks to Christopher Aillon, Richard W. M. Jones, Erik van
Pienbroek, Lennart Poettering, Orion Poplawski, Julian Sikorski, and all
of the members of the FPC, for assisting in drafting, refining, and
passing these guidelines.
As a reminder: The Fedora Packaging Guidelines are living documents! If
you find something missing, incorrect, or in need of revision, you can
suggest a draft change. The procedure for this is documented here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging/Committee#GuidelineChangeProcedure
Thanks,
~spot

The beta release is the last important milestone of Fedora 15. Only critical bug fixes will be pushed as updates leading to the general release of Fedora 15 in May. We invite you to join us in making Fedora 15 a solid release by downloading, testing, and providing your valuable feedback.
Of course, this is a beta release, meaning that some problems may still be lurking. A list of the problems we already know about can be seen on the Common F15 bugs page, at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Common_F15_bugs.
If you find a bug that's not found on that page, be sure it gets fixed before release by reporting your discovery at [3] Thank you!
---- Features ----
Desktop enthusiasts and end users of all sorts can look forward to:
* Gnome Shell and the Gnome 3 desktop. Gnome 3 is the next major
version of the Gnome desktop. After many years of a largely unchanged Gnome 2.x experience, GNOME 3 brings a fresh look and feel with GNOME Shell.
* LibreOffice Productivity Suite. LibreOffice is a fork of
OpenOffice, with the support of the OpenOffice.org community. All of the applications you know and love are still there, including apps for spreadsheets, document creation, and presentations.
* Desktop environments a-plenty. The Xfce and LXDE spins have
been updated, and the Fedora Spins SIG has other offerings tailored to a wide variety of user needs.
Sysadmins will love features such as:
* Appliance building. BoxGrinder creates appliances (virtual
machines) from simple plain text appliance definition files for various virtual platforms, and is great for building appliances for use in a Cloud environment.
* Dynamic Firewall. The dynamic firewall mode aims to make it
possible to change firewall settings without the need to restart the firewall and to make persistent connections possible.
Coders have lots of new development tools to try out, including:
* Updates to popular languages. Python 3.2, Rails 3.0.3, and
OCaml 3.12 are all included in Fedora 15.
* Project tooling. Maven 3 is a Java project management, project
comprehension, and build system tool.
* Compiling and debugging. GDB gets an update to 7.3, and GCC
4.6 is included. (Fedora 15 has also been rebuilt using GCC 4.6!)
And that's only the beginning. A more complete list and details of all the new features in Fedora 15 is available here: [4]
We have nightly composes of alternate spins available here: [5]

--- Mmm mmm good - YouTube videos now served in WebM ---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] a posting about YouTube's move to WebM, an open content media format:
With Firefox 4 as the default web browser in Fedora 15, users will now be able to access a wide variety of content in YouTube without any need for a third party plugin or patent encumbered codecs.
"To that end, all new videos uploaded to YouTube are now transcoded into WebM. WebM is an open media file format for video and audio on the web. Its openness allows anyone to improve the format and its integrations, resulting in a better experience for you in the long-term. As we work to transcode more videos into WebM, we hope to reduce the technical incompatibilities that prevent you from accessing video while improving the overall online video landscape.
Transcoding all new video uploads into WebM is an important first step, and we're also working to transcode our entire video catalog to WebM."

--- Fedora and GNOME branding drama: Missing the big picture (dissociatedpress.net) ---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] an article about the Gnome 3 and Fedora branding discussions:
"I'm not saying this to belittle Fedora - but to put this whole thing into perspective. Arguing over branding here is /just plain silly/. Depending on which side you're on, it may validate your "team" (GNOME vs. Fedora, I guess) but it's /utterly irrelevant/ when it comes to having an impact on Fedora adoption. At best it's a distraction from actually increasing the market share of Linux - and at worst it's a validation of the argument that community driven projects fail due to infighting."

--- Sanity saver: Fedora 15 answers Ubuntu's Unity (The Register UK) ---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] an article about Fedora 15's Gnome 3 feature set:
"Fedora 15 has slipped into its new GNOME 3 dress with aplomb. If you don't like GNOME 3 that's one thing, but it's hard to fault Fedora's integration of it.
GNOME 3 may be the biggest news in this beta, but Fedora 15 does manages to slip in another major change. Fedora 15 now uses systemd as the default system and session manager. Systemd was in Fedora 14, but not enabled by default. The result of the completed transition will be faster boot and shutdown times, especially on SSDs."
While Fedora 15 is definitely still a beta and not recommended for everyday use, it's leaps and bounds beyond Ubuntu's first beta release. If you want to test out GNOME 3, the Fedora 15 beta makes an excellent way to use it."

--- Seven Alternatives to GNOME 3 (The Register UK) ---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] an article on Gnome 3 and alternatives:
"The first thing you should do is make sure that you are not just reacting against the fact that you are facing a new desktop. The fact that many people - the exact percentage is uncertain -- like or tolerate GNOME 3 should be proof enough that you should be wary of snap judgments. Persist with GNOME 3 for a week, and you may find it more endurable than you originally imagined, especially if you learn how to change the default settings.
But if you are determined to avoid GNOME 3, what are the odds that you will find something to your liking? Probably, you will have to endure some differences. But assuming what you want is a desktop that resembles GNOME 2 as closely as possible, here are some possibilities to consider."

--- Fedora's Lovelock Linux is beta ready (The Register UK) ---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] an article about the release of Fedora 15 beta:
"The beta for Fedora 15, announced on Tuesday and codenamed Lovelock, becomes the first major Linux distro to include GNOME 3, which was released earlier this month. Fedora 15 will jettison GNOME 2.
GNOME 3 is a major departure from the existing interface: it cleans up the interface and makes it easier to find and fire up applications through juicy new icons."

--- Beta version of Fedora 15 includes GNOME 3 and systemd (The H Online) ---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] an article on Fedora 15 features:
"Fedora 15 will be the first major Linux distribution to include GNOME 3, which was released two weeks ago. Fedora 15 will not include GNOME 2; the KDE Plasma Desktop will be a member of the 4.6 series. The Fedora Project has also undertaken a major behind the scenes change, so that Fedora 15 will see a switch from Upstart to the sysvinit and Upstart alternative systemd, which was first introduced just under a year ago. The kernel in the beta is based on Linux version 2.6.38. LibreOffice will fill the office suite shoes and the C and C++-Compiler will be the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) 4.6."

--- Video: Introduction to Fedora (trainsignaltraining.com) ---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] a video introduction to Fedora 14:
"Fedora began in 2003 and the most recent version, 14 is codenamed Laughlin. In this video, we will begin with a brief history of the operating system, including a discussion of some of its unique features. We'll then review installation options including CD/DVD and USB. In addition, if you'd like to test Fedora before permanently installing it on your hard disk, you can use virtualization software and we'll cover that in another video.
The video continues with a look at the Fedora desktop and how to navigate and customize it to your liking. We'll wrap up with a few key resources where you can learn more about the Fedora community."

--- Fedora: virt-manager with SPICE support coming in Fedora 15 (montanalinux.org) ---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] a posting on SPICE and KVM features in Fedora 15:
"I would definitely recommend KVM and SPICE to those with the required hardware to run it over Oracle's VirtualBox or any of the others... unless of course you need accelerated 3D. KVM / SPICE doesn't support accelerated 3D. I've heard a few other products do but I've not actually tried to use it so I don't know how well it works in practice. In any event, KVM / SPICE is definitely a good combination for distro hoppers now! :) Let it be known though, SPICE has not been optimized yet for WAN use but it works great over a LAN."

--- Virtual security: release of the first beta Qubes OS (The H Online) ---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] a posting on Qubes OS and security features in it based on Fedora 14:
"The team led by security expert Joanna Rutkowska has released the first beta version of the Qubes OS Linux distribution. The operating system can also be installed on a USB stick thanks to its new installer. Qubes aims to provide security through virtualisation. It uses a Xen hypervisor to run applications in separate virtual machines based on Fedora 14. As a result, online banking data are not at risk when a game running in its own VM turns out to be a trojan."

-- Test Days --
Thursday 2011-04-14 was virtualization Test Day[1], hosted by our awesome virtualization team. A decent turnout of nine testers were able to run through all the test cases, and identify several bugs for the team to work on.
Thursday 2011-04-21 is the last of three GNOME 3 Test Days[2], where we will be testing out the final GNOME 3.0 release and making sure it is well integrated into Fedora 15, and identifying any remaining bugs that can be fixed up before Fedora 15's release. Live images are already available on the Test Day page to aid in testing, and it's very easy to join in and run through as many or as few test cases as you like. Please join us in #fedora-test-day on Freenode IRC[3] for this key Test Day!
Thursday 2011-04-28 is scheduled to be cloud Test Day, where the cloud SIG will be guiding testers in running Fedora 15 on Amazon's EC2 cloud, and testing out the Fedora 15 features BoxGrinder[4] (a tool designed to make it simple to rapidly create Fedora-based appliances and deploy them to various virtual platforms) and CloudFS[5] (a cloud-ready distributed filesystem). If you're interested in the cutting (bleeding?) edge of cloud development with Fedora, come and dive in!

--- Fedora 15 Beta preparation ---
Fedora 15 Beta RC2 arrived on 2011-04-09[1] and the group got down to testing it, filling out the installation[2] and desktop[3]test matrices and delving into various issues on the mailing list, particularly to do with GNOME 3. At the go/no-go meeting of 2011-04-13[4] the QA group was able to confidently declare RC2 had met all the release requirements, thanks to this diligent testing, and the RC2 images were declared gold. Rest is for the weak, though, so on 2011-04-15 the group followed up with the first blocker bug review meeting for Fedora 15 final[5], a mere four hour sprint at which 58 potential blocker bugs were reviewed.

Announcing the release of Fedora 15 Beta!!
by Dennis Gilmore
The clock is ticking. The days are counting down. The release of
Fedora 15, codenamed "Lovelock," is scheduled for release in late
May. Fedora is the leading edge, free and open source operating
system that continues to deliver innovative features to users
worldwide, with a new release every six months.
We are delighted to announce the availability of the Beta release
of Fedora 15.
"I beta one American dollar that you will love this release!"
Come see why we love Fedora so much. We are betting you will,
too. Download it now: http://fedoraproject.org/get-prerelease?wkanF15b
== What is the Beta Release? ==
The beta release is the last important milestone of Fedora 15. Only
critical bug fixes will be pushed as updates leading to the general
release of Fedora 15 in May. We invite you to join us in making
Fedora 15 a solid release by downloading, testing, and providing
your valuable feedback.
Of course, this is a beta release, meaning that some problems may still
be lurking. A list of the problems we already know about can be seen on
the Common F15 bugs page, at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Common_F15_bugs.
If you find a bug that's not found on that page, be sure it gets
fixed before release by reporting your discovery at
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/ Thank you!
== Features ==
Desktop enthusiasts and end users of all sorts can look forward to:
* Gnome Shell and the Gnome 3 desktop. Gnome 3 is the next major
version of the Gnome desktop. After many years of a largely
unchanged Gnome 2.x experience, GNOME 3 brings a fresh look
and feel with GNOME Shell.
* LibreOffice Productivity Suite. LibreOffice is a fork of
OpenOffice, with the support of the OpenOffice.org community.
All of the applications you know and love are still there,
including apps for spreadsheets, document creation, and presentations.
* Desktop environments a-plenty. The Xfce and LXDE spins have
been updated, and the Fedora Spins SIG has other offerings
tailored to a wide variety of user needs.
Sysadmins will love features such as:
* Appliance building. BoxGrinder creates appliances (virtual
machines) from simple plain text appliance definition files
for various virtual platforms, and is great for building
appliances for use in a Cloud environment.
* Dynamic Firewall. The dynamic firewall mode aims to make it
possible to change firewall settings without the need to restart
the firewall and to make persistent connections possible.
A more complete list and details of
all the new features in Fedora 15 is available here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/15/FeatureList
We have nightly composes of alternate spins available here:
http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/nightly-composes/

We had four excellent bids for the EMEA FUDCon this year (Milan, Budapest, Dublin, and Zurich) and all four proposals were well done. The Milan bid has several potential dates, so I will be working together with the Milan bid team and FAmSCo and our community of European ambassadors to choose a date that works well for all involved."

---Fedora Events---
The purpose of event is to build a global Fedora events calendar, and to identify responsible Ambassadors for each event.
----Upcoming Events (March - May 2011)----

---7.5 Reasons to Look Forward to Fedora 15 (linux.com)---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] a posting on anticipated features in Fedora 15:
"One of the reasons I watch Fedora closely is that it's a precursor for enterprise Linux. Not just Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), though that's certainly true. But advancements in Fedora usually make their way into other major distributions, and Fedora is often the first distro to ship cutting (sometimes bleeding) edge software. That's not to say that the other community distros never do this, but Fedora makes a habit of pushing the envelope.
Fedora 15 is no exception ― it has quite a few major new features, as well as a few enhancements that will likely influence the entire Linux landscape in the near future"

---Fedora 16 will not be a Beefy Miracle (Internetnews.com)---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] a report on the results of the Fedora 16 naming:
"I personally had thought that, Beefy Miracle would win, but that name only ended up with 1,662 votes. Beefy Miracle had been making a name for itself with an active Twitter feed that I have enjoyed following. There is also a project page supporting the campaign for Beefy Miracle. I've never seen so much effort and marketing going behind a potential name. It's a real shame that it didn't win."

---Fedora 16 Will Be Verne, Not A Beefy Miracle (phoronix.com)---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] another posting about the naming contest results for Fedora 16:
"The Fedora 16 name voting has ended. One of the leading proposals for the Fedora 16 codename was to call it a Beefy Miracle, but that will not happen. The Fedora 15 successor will be called Verne.
There was quite a campaign by Beefy Miracle proponents to the point that there was even a BeefyMiracle.org web-site all campaigning for this Fedora name."
The full article is available[2].

---No Beefy Miracle for Fedora (Network World)---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] another despondent writer over the loss of 'Beefy Miracle':
"In a surprise upset, the Fedora Project has chosen "Verne" for Fedora 16's release name, beating out Beefy Miracle ― despite strong support from former Fedora Project Leaders Paul Frields and Max Spevack.
Despite Spevack's promise to organize a weiner roast at Southeast LinuxFest 2011 and wear a hotdog hat, the vote came in with Verne ahead of Beefy Miracle by 542 votes. (Fedora uses range voting, rather than a simple majority voting system for release names.)"

---GNOME 3 set free (DesktopLinux.com)---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] an article on Gnome 3 in upcoming distros, including Fedora 15:
"GNOME 3.0 is a fairly radical departure from previous GNOME versions, offering a stripped-down GNOME Shell interface that enables Linux users to "focus on tasks while minimizing distractions such as notifications, extra workspaces, and background windows," says the GNOME project.
Linux distros that have already placed GNOME 3.0 front and center include Fedora Linux 15, now available in an alpha version, while many more will follow suit in the months to come."

---First Firefox 6 build next week, Firefox 7 by May, and aurora channel introduced---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] an article detailing upcoming Mozilla Firefox development:
"Mozilla's Engineering Project Manager, Christian Legnitto, has detailed the release schedule for Firefox 5, 6 and 7. If all goes to plan, Firefox 6.0a1 will be released next week, April 12, and Firefox 7.0a1 in the middle of May. The final build of Firefox 5 should be released on June 21, exactly three months after the release of Firefox 4."

---Interview: Charles H. Schulz on LibreOffice and The Document Foundation---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] an interview with Charles H. Schulz:
"The tipping point is an interesting question: you’re the first one to ask it! Given that the Document Foundation is made of many people with a diverse background and history with OpenOffice.org, I would say that there were in fact several different tipping points depending of the persons. For me, the tipping point was reached when I stopped feeling that I had any sort of value in the eyes of the new steward. I felt I was somewhere an expense on a sheet, and given that I was contributing to that project for free, it made me think really fast about all this. I think there was hope for some time that Oracle would be a good steward."

---New GNOME Cuts the Clutter (PC World)---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] another review of GNOME 3:
"Five years in the making, the newly released version 3 of the GNOME Linux desktop interface has been radically redesigned.
The development team endeavored to develop a simpler interface for the shell, noted Jon McCann, one of GNOME Shell's designers, in a Thursday announcement.
Fedora will include GNOME 3 as the default interface for its upcoming Fedora 15 release, due in May. GNOME 3.0 is also available in downloadable trial versions that can be loaded onto a thumb drive."

---Yahoo: The Linux Company (ZDNet)---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] an interesting article on Yahoo and its use of Linux:
"Today, at the Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit, Sven Dummer, Director of Linux engineering at Yahoo!, explained that 75% of Yahoo’s Web sites and services run on Linux. The rest? It runs on FreeBSD.
"So what does Yahoo use? Well, Dummer explained, “Yahoo has its own Linux distribution, YLinux, targeted for out specific needs. It’s based on Red Hat’s Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Yes, that’s right Yahoo is another Red Hat customer helping Red Hat become a billion dollar company.
Yahoo does, however, support its own supporting software package system. That’s a relic, Dummer said, of its FreeBSD ancestry. This system is used to package up new software and patches for both RHEL and FreeBSD. At the same time, Yahoo does use the RPM Package Manager (RPM, yes it’s a recursive acronym) for a lot of its internal software deployment."

---Focusing on what's important, not sensational (ITWorld.com)---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] an opinion piece on GNOME 3 and negative press:
"What really cranks my brain is the clumsy and obvious attempts by some of us in the media to somehow use GNOME 3 as a way to re-kindle the desktop wars. It's GNOME vs. KDE all over again, they shout in text, when really, it's no such thing. Anyone who tell you otherwise is just trying to drum up headlines for their publication. KDE and GNOME are different, thank you very much, but they are not out to kill each other off."

---Quick look at Fedora-inspired Fusion Linux 14 - Mini Review---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] a short blog review of Fedora 14:
"Round-up: Fusion Linux is slightly buggy, but a good choice for home users who want everything out of the box and do not want the hassle of adding extra repositories to get codecs and then install them. If Windows gaming on Linux is your thing, this distribution could work for you. If you're not fussy about disk space and the mix of libraries thrown your way in Fusion, or you are already using Mint and are looking to move or just try out a Fedora base, this could also be interesting. And for advanced users, don't forget, you can customize the kickstart file from the start as it is available on their website. And it's an installable live medium and runs well from DVD too."

---Test Days---
Thursday 2011-03-31 was ABRT Test Day[1]. As well as checking that ABRT (Fedora's automated crash report tool) is working as expected for Fedora 15, we tested out a big new feature, the retrace server[2]. This allows you to submit crash reports to a remote server which will generate the backtrace - avoiding the need for you to download and install often large debuginfo packages in order to submit reports. Michal Nowak posted a recap[3] of the event, noting that there had been eight testers and seventeen bugs filed overall.
This Thursday, 2011-04-14, will be virtualization Test Day[4], where our awesome virtualization team, starring Justin Forbes[5], will be our guides as we test the various virtualization features of Fedora 15, including shiny SPICE support in virt-manager[6]. Virtualization is a key component of any distribution nowadays, and the virtualization team always put on a smoothly run event, so please come along and help us test!

---Fedora 15 Beta preparation---
Preparation for the Fedora 15 Beta release moved into high gear over the last couple of weeks, with two more blocker review meetings[1] [2] and the TC1[3], RC1[4] and RC2[5] releases. Many testers made valuable contributions to the desktop and installation validation testing processes for each of these releases, and we were able to achieve comprehensive test coverage, and identify several blocker issues for the development team to fix. The group was able to catch SELinux issues caused by the introduction of the /run directory[6] very early and ensure the change did not land in the 'stable' Fedora 15 repository until this was resolved, and did not affect the Beta release.

---Release criteria revisions---
Adam Williamson announced his intention to push various recently discussed release criteria revisions into production[1], and later announced that he had done so[2]. In the meantime, a discussion developed on how to capture the fact that some desktops can block the release and some cannot in a clear yet future-proof way, with another proposal from Adam[3] and some well-considered reservations[4] from Jóhann Guemundsson.
Bruno Wolff suggested criteria for image sizes[5], to ensure that images at each release point are of an appropriate size for convenient testing. Adam provided a proposed wording[6]. Dennis Gilmore pointed out that the sources DVD should probably be exempt from the criterion[7], at least until final release time.

--LATAM Fedora!--
LATAM Fedora is a regular column of Spanish language contributions around open source software. It is our first expansion into incorporating foreign language content into FWN.
This week's contribution is from Guillermo Gómez, a third installment on Ruby. Enjoy!
1 SyntaxError: compile error
2 (irb):2: class definition in method body
3 from (irb):7
1 >> def resultado
2 >> "Uno"
3 >> end
4 >> p resultado
5 "Uno"
6
7 >> def resultado
8 >> "Uno"
9 >> return true
10 >> end
11 => nil
12 >> p resultado
13 true
1 def trampa(arg1="boba", arg2="tnt", arg3="30s")
2 "#{arg1}, #{arg2}, #{arg3}"
3 end
1 ?> trampa
2 => "boba, tnt, 30s"
3 >> trampa("lisa")
4 => "lisa, tnt, 30s"
5 >> trampa("lisa","h2o")
6 => "lisa, h2o, 30s"
7 >> trampa("lisa","h2o", "45h")
8 => "lisa, h2o, 45h"
1 def varargs(arg1, *resto)
2 "Recibi #{arg1} y #{resto.join(', ')}"
3 end
1 >> varargs("uno")
2 => "Recibi uno + "
3 >> varargs("uno","dos")
4 => "Recibi uno + dos"
5 >> varargs("uno","dos","tres")
6 => "Recibi uno + dos, tres"
1 >> def con_y_sin_bloque(p1)
2 >> if block_given?
3 >> yield(p1)
4 >> else
5 ?> p1
6 >> end
7 >> end
8 => nil
9 >> con_y_sin_bloque(10) { |p1| (1..5).each { |m| p m + p1 } }
10 11
11 12
12 13
13 14
14 15
15 => 1..5
16 >> con_y_sin_bloque(10)
17 => 10
1 class CalculadoraDeVentas
2 def initialize(nombre, &bloque)
3 @nombre, @bloque = nombre, bloque
4 end
5
6 def precio_de_venta(costo)
7 @bloque.call(costo)
8 end
9 end
1 >> cpd = CalculadoraDeVentas.new("Distribuidor1") { |costo| p "Precio de venta #{(1.5*costo).to_s} BsF." }
2 => #<CalculadoraDeVentas:0xb735ccc8 @nombre="Distribuidor1", @bloque=#<Proc:0xb735cd18@(irb):75>
3 >> cpm = CalculadoraDeVentas.new("Minorista1") { |costo| p "Precio de venta #{(1.8*costo).to_s} BsF." }
4 => #<CalculadoraDeVentas:0xb7347008 @nombre="Minorista1", @bloque=#<Proc:0xb7347058@(irb):77>
5
6 >> cpd.precio_de_venta(100)
7 "Precio de venta 150.0 BsF."
8 => nil
9 >> cpm.precio_de_venta(100)
10 "Precio de venta 180.0 BsF."
11 => nil
1 File.size("archivo_grande.mpeg") 2 Math.sin(Math::PI/3)
1 >> self.class
2 => Object
3 >> self.hash
4 => -608576338
5 >> hash
6 => -608576338
7 >> self.object_id
8 => -608576338
9 >> object_id
10 => -608576338
1 >> self.class
2 => Object
3 >> self.object_id
4 => -608576338
5 >> Object.object_id
6 => -608573798
1 def cinco(a,b,c,d,e)
2 "Argumentos #{a} #{b} #{c} #{d} #{e}"
3 end
1 >> cinco("un", *["dos", "tres" , "cuatro", "cinco"])
2 => "Argumentos un dos tres cuatro cinco"
3 >> cinco(*["un", "dos", "tres" , "cuatro", "cinco"])
4 => "Argumentos un dos tres cuatro cinco"
5 >> cinco("un", *["dos", "tres" , "cuatro", "cinco"])
6 => "Argumentos un dos tres cuatro cinco"
7 >> cinco("un", *["dos", "tres"] , "cuatro", "cinco") # Debe ser el último argumento
8 SyntaxError: compile error
---Argumentos opcionales ---
1 >> cinco
2 ArgumentError: wrong number of arguments (0 for 5)
1 def cinco(a=nil,b=nil,c=nil,d=nil,e=nil)
2 "Argumentos #{a} #{b} #{c} #{d} #{e}"
3 end
1 >> cinco
2 => "Argumentos "
3 >> cinco("uno")
4 => "Argumentos uno "
1 def cinco(a=nil,b=nil,c=nil,d=nil,e=nil)
2 "Argumentos 1:#{a} 2:#{b} 3:#{c} 4:#{d} 5:#{e}"
3 end
1 >> cinco
2 => "Argumentos 1: 2: 3: 4: 5:"
3 >> cinco("A",nil,nil,"D")
4 => "Argumentos 1:A 2: 3: 4:D 5:"
---Simulando argumentos por nombres: hash---
1 def hash_params(params)
2 p "ID: #{params[:id]}"
3 p "Clave: #{params[:clave]}"
4 end
code class="ruby">
>> hash_params(:id => "XXX" , :clave => "Z A Z Z")
"ID: XXX"
"Clave: Z A Z Z"
=> nil
>> hash_params(:clave => "1 2 3 4", :id => "007")
"ID: 007"
"Clave: 1 2 3 4"
=> nil
>> hash_params({:clave => "1 2 3 4", :id => "007"}) # Sintaxis estricta con las {}
"ID: 007"
"Clave: 1 2 3 4"

FUDCon EMEA 2011 will be held in Milan, Italy
by Jared K. Smith
I am pleased to announce that the FUDCon conference in the EMEA region
in 2011 will be in Milan, Italy. We had four excellent bids for the
EMEA FUDCon this year (Milan, Budapest, Dublin, and Zurich) and all
four proposals were well done. The Milan bid has several potential
dates, so I will be working together with the Milan bid team and
FAmSCo and our community of European ambassadors to choose a date that
works well for all involved.

--- Update on Fedora 15 Development - GNOME 3 Shell Updates (montanalinux.org) ---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] a posting on Gnome 3 shell experience in Fedora 15:
"I've been using the GNOME 3 Shell more and I really like the changes they've made since the Fedora 15 Alpha release. These changes include larger icons in the Applications list and auto-managed virtual desktops. Some people call this a "dumbing down" of the interface but I prefer to call it streamlining. If you have a lot of previous GNOME 2.x experience you might perceive it to be counter-intuitive... but give it a little while. The streamlining really makes the new environment easy to learn and use. It is elegant, and as one blogger put it... "it looks expensive"."

--- Fedora introduces new top-level directory for runtime data (Network World) ---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] another upcoming feature in Fedora 15:
""Fedora 15 will come with a lot of new features and interesting changes — including a whole new top-level directory in the form of /run for runtime data.
This may sound trivial to many, but top-level directories tend to be a touchy topic in some circles. Consider that there's an entire standard that was hashed out years ago, it's surprising to see a top-level directory casually introduced.
But Poettering says that he already has buy-in from the other major distributions."

--- Linux distributions to include /run/ directory (The H Online) ---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] another posting about the new /run directory in Fedora 15:
"Poettering says that the introduction of the new directory wasn't just his own idea but that it has been discussed among the Debian, Fedora, Suse and Upstart developers; Colin Watson said that he is happy to support the use of the new directory in Ubuntu. Poettering indicated that many developers working in this area may have wanted something like /run for quite a while, but that they may have feared the potential political consequences and discussions"

Two new categories have been created on Transifex.net: 'Fedora Upstream Projects'[1] - for modules that do not restrict themselves to Fedora, and 'Websites'[2] - for all the Fedora Website modules. The creation of the first category now allows language teams to use one single team for all each projects. Earlier, it was necessary for language teams to be created for each of these projects[3] [4].
