- Fedora Weekly News Issue 229 -
Welcome to Fedora Weekly News Issue 229[1] for the week ending June 9, 2010. What follows
are some highlights from this issue.
In announcements this week, another appointment to the Fedora Board, news that with Fedora
13, live spins will be moving to rawhide, and a wonderful variety of postings to the
fedora-user list. In news from the Fedora Planet, early feedback on the Gnome 3.0 related
projects, thoughts on openness and the Design team, and news on a new release of Virtaal
-- a Computer Aided Translation Tool (CAT) package. Fedora In The News brings us a range
of postings from the trade press and blogosphere about Fedora 13. In Quality Assurance
news this week, details on impending Fedora 11 bug closure, a report on a triage class on
real-life bugzapping, and updates from the AutoQA team's activities. Ambassadors this
week features several event reports from Ghana, Guatemala and India. In Artwork/Design
Team news, some discussion on switching fonts used for Fedora branding and a new
initiative to attract contributors "a bi-weekly blog post where we’ll outline a
quick-and-easy design project that needs doing for the Fedora Community..." This
issue finishes up with Security Advisories, covering security-related packages released in
the last week. Enjoy FWN 229!

--- Fedora Announcement News ---
---- Final Board appointment ----
Paul W. Frields[1], Fedora Project Leader, announced[2], "I'm pleased to announce
that Stephen Smoogen will join the Fedora Project Board. He'll be seated along with
the other newly elected and appointed Board members at our next regular meeting in June,
which will be an IRC public meeting. Stephen brings many years of experience with the
Fedora Project in a variety of areas, and as a volunteer contributor and a Red Hat
employee at various times. This appointment completes the normal succession process for
the Board for this term. We're currently working out the meeting schedule between the
new members, and we'll send it out via normal channels, such as the advisory-board
list, well in advance of the first meeting."

---- Package maintainers -- want test results by mail? ----
James Laska [1] announced[2], "Greetings package maintainers, Want to get
notification of any breakage in your just-built koji packages? This includes results of
rpmlint [3], rpmguard [4] and, if applicable, initscript [5] tests. Good news, you can now
opt-in to receive test results by mail!
All you have to do is:
* 1. Login to
fedorapeople.org # ssh
fedorapeople.org
* 2. Run the command: autoqa-optin <package> [<release>]
That's it! Thanks to Seth Vidal for the autoqa-optin script and proposed changes to

---- Outage: VPN Work - 2010-06-04 14:00 UTC ----
Mike McGrath[1] announced [2],"There will be an outage starting at 2010-06-04 14:00
UTC, which will last approximately 1 hours.
To convert UTC to your local time, take a look at [3]
or run: date -d '2010-06-04 14:00 UTC'
Reason for outage: Updating some vpn settings. I hope this will be a blip lasting a few
seconds. This is mostly a "just in case" notice. There's a deadline to meet
to have it done by the end of the day which is why it is happening earlier in the day
instead of after hours.

-- Planet Fedora --
In this section, we cover the highlights of Planet Fedora[1] - an aggregation of blogs
from Fedora contributors worldwide.

--- General ---
Ian MacGregor revisited[1] the Gnome 3 Shell. "I could go on and on about how
impressed I am with gnome shell..." Matthias Clasen noted[2] that It IS Coming.
"But GNOME consists of well over a hundred modules, so there is naturally a lot of
work left. There are a number of things where you can help."
On the design front, Máirín Duffy discuessed[3] the importance of "an open and
inclusive process" to the Design Team. "We want folks to use open formats and
collaborate in an open way, using open source tools, sharing sources and working together
rather than in competition. An ongoing goal for the team is to get greater community
participation in creating artwork for Fedora." Máirín also announced[4] the Fedora
Design Team Bi-weekly Bounty. "Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to
polish up the design and layout of the Fedora 13 Feature Profiles print document."
Mel Chua looked[5] back at the history of the Fedora and Sugar on a Stick releases to
figure out where the project could go in the future.
Martin Sourada decided[6] to use the Midori Webkit-based web browser. "So here're
some highlights of what you can get with the latest and greatest stuff that's in
Fedora 12 (and a bit of customizing)..."
Jesus Rodriguez explained[7] how to (and how not to) move a large volume of data from one
system to another by physically removing one drive from an madadm RAID-1 array and putting
it into another system.
Mohammed Morsi announced[8] the release of "a Fedora 12 based appliance complete w/ a
stack of rpms built against and related to Ruby 1.9.1."
Richard W.M. Jones started[9] work on a reporting package for Bugzilla using the command
line python-bugzilla interface.
Dwayne Bailey wrote[10] about what is new in Virtaal 0.6.1. "For those not in the
know, Virtaal is our Computer Aided Translation Tool (CAT) that we've been developing
as part of the ANLoc project."

--- Review of Fedora 13 on my ThinkPad thingy (
rubenerd.com) ---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[2] a posting from a blog from 2010-06-04:
"Firstly, kudos to the Fedora team for continuing to reduce their dependency on Mono!
Fedora 12 implemented the beautiful Gnote in place of Tomboy, and with 13 they replaced
F-Spot with Shotwell. I have to admit I’d never heard of the Vala language until I read up
about Shotwell, it looks really interesting and the perfect antidote to Mono which has
always made me feel uneasy. Could Gnome finally be able to compete with KDE and Qt in this
regard now?
And of course I’m delighted that a fully featured Python 3.0 stack is now available in the
default install! Granted my primary Python haunt is Django, but my personal scripts have
been running on 3.0 on my Mac for a long while now, so it’ll be great to port them
over."

Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] user highlights with screenshots on Fedora 13:
"Fedora 13 is a very stable update. If you want to play with advanced features that
are not available on other distributions, such as installing to Storage Area Networks
(SANs) or disks attached to mainframes, then you should give it a try."

--- Distributionstest Fedora 13 ---
Henrik Heigl forwarded[1] a German review of Fedora 13:
"Fedora 13 ist am 25. Mai 2010 erschienen und wartet mit aktualisierten Desktops und
einer Vielzahl von neuen Funktionen auf. Dieser Artikel versucht einen Eindruck von der
Distribution mit Schwerpunkt auf den Neuerungen zu geben."

--- Fedora 13 Review (Software Latest Releases) ---
Rahul Sundaram forwarded[1] another review of Fedora 13:
"Fedora 13 is especially a turning point in terms of installation method. The BFO
project allows you to download an ISO of smaller size and launching an installation via
Internet. This is undoubtedly one of the most demanding features. The choice of default
applications seems also far more consistent than Ubuntu. For example Pino instead of
Gwibber (which is much easier to use) Shotwell instead of Gthumb and Fspot.
In short, Fedora 13 leaves once again a good impression. For professionals, has better
performance than other popular distributions and for home users Ubuntu or Linux Mint which
are perhaps more intuitive to begin working with Linux. Only regret, too long and unworthy
startup time of a modern Linux distribution. But in the world of Linux, personal taste
matters more."

--- Proven testers policy finalized ---
Adam Miller announced[1] that the "proven testers" policy/process had been
finalized and published[2]. He noted that the form of the mentoring process had not yet
been decided, and asked applicants to have patience while the group worked it out. James
Laska asked[3] "are we ready to start processing these requests?" Adam
Williamson suggested[4] first agreeing on what mentors should teach applicants, and
proposed that the overall aim be to test that critical path updates do not break the tasks
which are defined as the basis of the critical path policy[5]. James posted in broad
agreement[6].

--- Triage scripts ---
During the Bugzappers weekly meeting of 2010-06-01[1], Matej Cepl outlined his plans for
the currently Jetpack prototype-based triage assistance scripts[2]. He explained that the
Jetpack prototype had been discontinued by Mozilla in favour of the Jetpack SDK, which
carries the same name and has similar goals but is a completely different design, being an
SDK which facilitates the creation of regular Firefox extensions, rather than being an
extension in its own right on which scripts are run. Matej intends to rewrite the triage
scripts on top of the Jetpack SDK, over time and as the SDK becomes more mature. This has
the benefit of making it easier and safer to install and run the scripts, and potentially
making them easier to port to other browsers.

-- Ambassadors --
In this section, we cover Fedora Ambassadors Project[1].

--- Fedora at Idlelo 4 in Ghana ---
Isaac Sanni-Thomas reports on the recent IDLELO 4 event in Ghana and Fedora's
participation in that African expo.
Issac reports:
* Idlelo reported over 100 participants from around the world. Among them was Ben
Konrath from GNOME project with whom we had a joint Exhibition booth. We also had John
'Maddog' Hall with us who proudly shared Live Fedora 12 CD's. We can proudly
say that our booth had the largest visitors. At a point we had to share responsibilities
in order to be able to handle the crowd that our booth had.
* Since this was Fedora's first major event in Ghana/West Africa we had lots of
interest as more people wanted to know what Fedora was coming to offer Ghanaians as well
as what Fedora was all about. We also had some visitors from Ivory Coast who said they did
not have an ambassador and hence didn't know much about Fedora.
* The general question that seem to hit us at almost every second was "What is
the difference between Fedora and Ubuntu?". This was coupled with people wanting to
know features we had in Fedora that Ubuntu did not have.
* We received a lot suggestions about how to make our presence felt in Africa. The
most recurrent one was about Free Media. All our visitors emphasized the fact that the
reason why they are used to Ubuntu and know more about Ubuntu is because of the Free CD
program Ubuntu has. Ubuntu hasnt held any event in Ghana but the Free CD program alone has
won the hearts of over 90 percent of Linux users in Ghana.
* We were privileged to have Ben Konrath from GNOME using Fedora mainly and people
were happy to see GNOME 3 in action on his laptop.
* Fedora had a translation session which was held by Pierros teaching how people can
contribute to translating Fedora to the Akan language. There was also a panel discussion
led by Pierros to discuss the organizational structure of Fedora.
* We gave away lots of live CDs and helped some people to format their laptops to
start using Fedora. We gave away some t-shirts and badges. The most popular swag was the
badges and the Live CD's. We were so happy to see lots of people wear the badges
around the Conference. It showed how involved they want to be in Fedora.
* Lots of people were interested in the OLPC as Pierros demonstrated how its run on
Fedora.
* We are happy to introduce a new incoming member who was with another distro by name
Kennedy Kasina. He was glad to receive some swag from us as that also motivated him a lot.
He is being mentored by Pierros in translation of Fedora to Swahili for Kenya and East
African countries speaking Swahili.
* Fedora was the only distro that showed up and made a lot of presence and impact
during the event. A lot of thanks goes to Maddog who took sharing of the Fedora 12 media
upon himself during his talks. Since the CD was coming from Maddog, a lot of people felt
inspired to start using Fedora immediately.
Isaac said, "In all we had a pretty successful event. Currently we have some action
points for Ghana for the next few months and especially next year when we will have
expanded our user base."
--- Fedora 13 release party in Guatemala ---
Neville Cross reports on a Fedora 13 release party in Guatemala on his blog here. The
Spanish version is on top and the English is below. Neville addressed around 80 attendees
on Fedora's behalf and established a Fedora presence in Guatemala.
--- Fedora Activity Day in Pune, India ---
Rahul Sundaram reports on the recent Fedora Activity Day in the Red Hat office in Pune,
India. It was a two day event. You might have seen the blog posts on that over this week
in Planet Fedora and we have a roundup here.
Rahul reports that there was a variety of projects and tasks that was tackled during the
event. Here is a quick summary:
* OLPC/Sugar: Sayamindu who works for OLPC joined hands with Kushal Das to package up
a accessibility tool of interest to OLPC and a Sugar activity called Pathagar which is a
book server. Sayamindu also gave a talk on life as downstream of Fedora.
* Fedora Tour: A clutter based app with whiz bang effects that aims to provide a
friendly welcome screen for new users on first login. Ankur Sinha is leading this effort.
Ankur has also helped out in packaging reviews and submitted a few new review requests.
The latest being a dependency of Shotwell.
* Fedora Medical Spin: Susmit is a leading an effort to create a medical spin for the
next release. Many of us are helping out. Harsh Varma participated in some packaging tasks
and is helping with this spin as well.
* Systemd, WebM support etc: I reviewed a few packages, approved one and worked on
packaging up systemd, updating webkitgtk in Fedora 12 for WebM support, fixing a E-V-R
issue that broke Deluge, qbittorrent etc., for users upgrading to Fedora 13 from Fedora
12.
* Package Reviews: A number of us including Rangeen Basu, Ankur Sinha, Kushal Das and
me participated in doing package reviews.
* Autootools workshop: Siddesh who works for GSS gave a introductory workshop on
autotoolizing a project.
* Repository wide fixes: Rakesh Pandit working on fixing several security bugs and
Imran who couldn't make it to the event due to some last minute disruption came up on
IRC and filed patches that fixed all of the pending E-V-R issues between Fedora 12 and
Fedora 13. Rakesh will be committing and doing the builds to resolve them today. We hope
to be tackling source url issues, desktop file fixes, FTBFS and other similar issues via a
online FAD sometime later.
* gFotoStat: Kishan and Meejan worked on a tool for statistics of photos for
professionals. This tool can run against a set of pics and provide all sorts of
interesting info based on the metadata. They fixed a number of bugs and added some new
features in a new release.

--- The Complementary Font ---
Máirín Duffy proposed[1] a branding change for the complementary font used with the Fedora
logo[2] "our secondary font, MgOpen Modata, doesn't have basic accent marks (I
can't even write my own name in it.) Do we want to consider switching to a different
font that does?" and made a proposal "I found this font that has a similar
rounded look (it's a wider and more widely-spaced font, but I think that's okay)
and it seems to cover all the basic accents including acute, grave, umlat, circumflex,
etc. It's called Quicksand."
Not everybody was happy with the new proposed font, like Fabian A. Scherschel[3]
"Personally, the lower-case 'a' in that font gives me a headache. I think
it's not 'modern' enough looking for Fedora" or Paul W. Frields[4]
"Speaking only for my tastes, this font seems more excentric than Modata. The wider
spacing could have a negative impact on content where we can effectively use Modata
now."
Máirín also outlined[5] the lack of an official body text "We don't actually have
an official body text font (I tend to use Liberation Sans when laying out body text),
maybe we should pick a specific one and add it to our brand guidelines" and Ian
Weller made a proposal[6] "We could use either Liberation or Droid. It matters not to
me", with a good number of the team members supporting Droid.

--- Bi-Weekly Bounties ---
Máirín Duffy wrote on her blog[1] and then on the Fedora Design mailing list[2] about a
new initiative to attract contributors "a bi-weekly blog post where we’ll outline a
quick-and-easy design project that needs doing for the Fedora Community, outlining all the
tools, files, and other resources you’ll need to complete the project." She presented
the task, the rules, the tools and also the rewards and a couple of people responded [3]
